Opposite of Dark Angels?

Obviously traitor marines are the furthest you can get from the First Legion as they are the most loyal of all the Emperor's creations.

But I mean in terms of gameplay and theme. I have quite a large collection of Dark Angels including a good variety of each "wing," but they are my first and only army. I'm thinking about starting a second army for variety's sake and having trouble figuring out what I would build/paint/play that would be most different from Dark Angels. With 3 different play styles and color schemes, the Dark Angels seem to cover everything but "cheap hordes" maybe?

Does anyone else collect something besides DA that they feels gives them a different perspective on the game? I'm going back and forth between something completely different like a Xenos force, or something complimentary like Guard or Knights so I could mix and match with my DA. Thoughts?

I have guard, knights, and nids. Knights are some of my favorite models. They dont get used often, but there for a little bit the cerastus was running around just for the rule of cool. (Painted him white and red, and ran him with as many other deathwing dreads as I could fit.)

The guard blobs are a pain to paint, but complete the DA visually, and gamewise.

Nids... I have them, played two games with them... I'm just too much of a sucker for the 1st legion. However, if you're looking for the opposite of DA, this is it. You can paint them any color. Where DA have smoke and stone they have drool and slime. Trading Bleached bone, for bone hooks as it were.

To scratch the modeling and hobby itch I have a variety of Imperial models loosely put together with an Inquisitor.

The core troops I'm using are Deathwatch, the background fits a soup orientated approach.

It let's you buy interesting models and still have a framework in which you can play them.

A nice easy formation is 3 assasins + a HQ I've gone for 2 vindicare's and a celexusus + Greyfex

Another 1 could be 3 custodes shield Captains on bikes

If you balance it out you can have some great games with these sort of things and there's nothing stopping you mixing it in with your DA + your not committed to 1 faction and can indulge in some of the superb miniatures available.

The Space Wolves run a entirely different "ship" compared to their cloaked cousins.

Where the sons of the Lion are somewhat rigid and well disciplined in their doctrine and lifestyle the sons of the Wolf are seemingly feral and wild.

I've always felt the two chapters compliment each other perfectly on the tabletop. Where the wolves are mid-frontline aggressive the dark angels are mid-frontline supportive. The same can be said the other way as well. The wolves can be the perfect support group for a dark angels frontal assault.

Greenwing are one of the better power armour gunline armies (plaaaasma), deathwing cover the expensive elites and ravenwing cover the fast, shooty and fragile side.

While guard are fun and horde-y and would ally well, I think they may play a little too close to greenwing in particular to really be a radical playstyle break.

I think it'd be a nice break painting wise to avoid power armour armies, which narrows the list somewhat.

Knights would certainly scratch that 'big project' itch if you wanted something to ally in. Other than that, xenos is the way to go I think. Orks are somewhat lackluster absent the codex for now, but they're certainly about as far from dark angels as you can get for style, but you're probably sick of painting green... Nids would be a huge change for painting and playstyle, and have a lot of viable ways to build from gaunt hordes to big bugs. Plus you can do genestealer cult allies which are just sneaky buggers, and even some brood brother guard if you fancy a leman russ or two... Some variant of Eldar could be interesting, and certainly more glass cannon than you're used to, but might not be a massive break from ravenwing to play.

So for the biggest break in playstyle and painting with a lot of options to explore, I'd personally go nids and/or genestealer cult. Go from saving humanity to trying to eat it...

I'm going with Pale Demons as the opposite of Dark Angels.

For variety, I've got Imperial Guard, and Grey Knights, but they haven't really seen much play since 4th ed.  Loved me the old Codex: Daemonhunters.  The follow up Codex: Grey Knights, not so much.

I used to have a Chaos Army that represented a renegade chapter that I was pretty happy with it, but I literally lost it.  I've currently got a bunch of Chaos stuff I've been meaning to throw together from the 8th ed starter set, but haven't gotten around to it yet.  Maybe March with be my Chaos month!

Opposite of Dark Angels? Blood Ravens. Dark Angels are a loyalist legion that is secretly traitor. While Blood Ravens are loyalist from a traitor legion (Thousand Suns) thats secretly loyal (and like to steal all kinds of artifacts, like custodes armor).

But if you are looking for a different gameplay style, then probably guard, tau or tyranids.

Guard is all about drowning your opponent with the blood of your own men. Tau is static gunlines while crisis suits rain from the sky, and Tyranids is mostly about completely overrunning your opponent with genestealers because thats been the only viable unit the codex has consistently had.
