Can a Heretic create a crusade!?

Hi all,

I've recently decided to start a Black Templar's army after spending pretty much my whole 40k career as a filthy Chaos heretic!  I've also loved the fluff and pictures of the Black Templar's and have actually painted two whole armies for some friends of mine, but never actually played the boys in Black myself.

I've flirted with other loyalist marine armies in the past, but they just didn't cut the mustard for me so quickly got sold.  So, now as no one at my LFGS has a templars army, I've finally decided to break from my chaos roots and start one as it's something i've always wanted to do!

This is where i'm after some advice as i'm still being a little heretical and basing my army off the dark imperium primaris marines, mainly as my LFGS has given me a great deal on those models.

My plan is to convert some of the models, namely the captain or lieutenant into a chaplain and possibly Emperors Champion as i feel these are almost a must take, then build from there into a 2k list.  Has anyone done something similar and could give advice?  What i'm thinking is adding three close combat crusader squads to ride in razorbacks then another one as some form of fire support squad.  Then the intercessor squad following up to cap mid range or lend fire support.

Elites i'm thinking a good old termy assault squad using the forgeworld upgrades, because you kinda have to have them for rule of cool in my eyes.  Then i'm debating a Redemptor dread?  Or stick with an ironclad or contemptor?

Fast we obviously have the Inceptor squad from the box set, then heavy is also the Hellblaster squad.

I'm thinking one side i'll have all the Primaris units, the other side standard marines.

Would really appreciate some feedback from your Templar vets!  Also to note i'm looking at mostly fluffy and fun, and not uber competitive.

Thanks in advance!

Burn filthy heretic! Welcome to the crusade!

Most of the old grumblers will advise against primaris, because kids these days... ;)

Otherwise what you have in mind seems solid, i would advise against melee units in razorbacks though, they kind of go against each others purpose. Also don't expect to go smash up some hardcore tournaments, we're not up there with the comp lists. If you're in for the fluff and flavour, and the harsh lesson that good looking black is seriously hard to paint :P than show your ZEAL!

I'm jealous of your excess of Chaos bitz! I try to sprinkle a liberal amount of chaos heads, backpacks, legs, arms, torsos, weapons.. well... I try to sprinkle a fair amount of chaos EVERYTHING into my crusade. Shave off the chaos symbols and you have some proper looking medieval weapons and armor. Perfect fit for a marauding crusade of angry space knights.

Very good point very well put!  Yes i've been in the hobby for about 10 years now any my bitz box is well..... two very large plastic container's!  I've got a load of Ad Mech, Imperial Guard and various Blood Angels and Dark Angels bitz as well as chaos.  So plenty to customise my new crusade! Also got some Deathwatch sprues and the maces look like they will be a good fit?

Do people tend to stick with power swords for fluff lists or are power maces good too?  They do give a good medieval vibe to me.

Good point on the Razors and CC troops.  My thinking was more extra firepower once they've dropped off their loads.  I guess i could ditch them, then with the points saved get three rhinos and a single razor to carry the fire support squad.  I ideally would like a Landraider, but the points costs since 8th dropped is, ouch!  Similar issue to my word eaters One of my Heretic armies......  How do you get your CC troops into combat cheaply without them dying!  Simple answer, you don't!

As to Black, i guess it's similar to the Black Legion filthy arch heretic army.  Although i'm guessing a much more cleaner black, how have people done theirs?  Grey undercoat then Abbadon black or is there a better non GW paint people have found?  I'm used to painting Red with lots of blood armies, dirty green ones and very, VERY bright pink ones!

There is a lot of different approaches, i recommend you check the different crusade threads around here. Some go with black and lighten it up, some go with grey and darken it down, some don't even use actual black but dark grey. Then there's black with brown, blue, purple tints to the highlights... it's really astonishing :P

Morning my new found Templar brothers.  So i've started the build of my new crusade, they are already surrounded by a huge Chaos warband (20k ish points worth!) So keen to get them built and reinforcements are inbound with my latest funds from the war chest.

I have another question for the veteran brothers, which, reading other posts and places in the warp (internet) seems to cause some debate!  Do we have a legit guide for the different shoulder pads on different units?  I know those blue poster boys like to keep the correct symbols for assault, tactical etc, but i'm guess we don't care about such things as long as there's zeal!

Also in respect to our vehicles and dreadnoughts, what panels are generally painted white and are the top half of the dreadnought arms also white?

Yes, and No.

We have only 7 main ranks in the Templars:

  1. High Marshall
  2. Marshalls
  3. Castellans
  4. Sergeants (This one is slightly debatable, it seems to be a rank within the Sword Brethren, but not the initiates.)
  5. Sword Brethren
  6. Initiates
  7. Neophytes

All Castellans, Marshalls and Sergeants will be members of the Sword Brethren. (Of course, we also have specialists like Apothecaries, techmarines etc.)

The holy Codex Black Templars (Get yourself a copy.) has a 'guide' on Shoulder pad colours, which you can find here: www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326140-black-templar-shoulder-heraldry/

As you can see, according to the guide Sword Brethren (and by extension, Sergeants and above) wear red lined black Pauldrons. We don't have symbols to mark out the different types of squad, like :HS: or :Troops: . We just have Maltese crosses.

However, it's up to you. We are Templars and we can do what the hell we want! For instance, in my shooty squads, the Sword Brethren have those shoulder pads, but white helmets. All my heavy weapon marines have one red pad with a white cross, one black pad with a white cross and red helmets. I then drop them into any squad I feel like, so that I can mix and match my Devastator heavy weapon marines with my troop squad heavy weapon marines. I even have one shooty squad with white weapons.

With regards to vehicles, it's again up to you. In the codex, the vehicles are entirely black with no white panels at all. The white panels are a choice for yourself, in my crusade I paint recessed panels white, but I also painted a whole Ironclad white!

Just do whatever makes you happy.

Generally everyone gets a black cross on a white field on both shoulder pads. Veterans are called sword brethren and they get a red cross on a black pad with red trim. Crusader squads sergeants are members of the sword brethren so they'd get those colors too. Assault/fast attack gets the normal pad but with red trim. And the chaplain get a inverted colors.

I do mine differently. I keep the right pad blank so I can put little inscriptions when my guys perform great deeds. Officers like Marshalls (captains) and lieutenants (castellans) get personal heraldry on the right pad and gold trim all around. For the sword brethren, I hate red on black for some reason. I think because it breaks the rules of medieval heraldry. So they get normal colored pads but red robes.

So as long as you keep it consistent, do what you want!

Actually this is the perfect opportunity to ask you a question in the safety of our crusade fleet haha. I'm building a small force (pfft...right) of word bearers so I can have some zealots to fight my zealots. I don't know CSM at all. How do you kit out your champion?

It really does depend on the role you have in mind for that squad.  With the current codex the bog standard CSM squads are rather lack luster, not being able to shoot all that well, and not being that great in CC.  Most heretics fill out the troop tax with cultists as they are dirt cheap as then use cult troops to fill their role. (noise marines, bezerkers etc)

I normally play as World eaters, so for me it was easy as Bezerkers are troops that way the Champ gets a power fist and chainsword to max out attacks.  If playing as my Emperors Children, they excel at shooting due to their sonic blasters, so my champ gets one of them.  Deathguard, they get a plasmagun.

As to a bog standard CSM squad, i would say stick to how i presume Crusader squads are run.  If you're going CC, give them mark of khorne a power weapon and a chainsword to maximise your attacks, if running as a shooty squad, give them mark of slannesh and a combi weapon to match the squads weapons.

Hope my knowledge of the dark arts helps you with your "training army to practice my zeal against" brother :)

Short answer: the induction paddlin' will be very...thorough:verymad:

I'll look forward to it!  I mean.... errr.....

Well progress stalled somewhat this weekend due to warp storms stopping my modelling time.  However the first set of brothers for my crusade have been created, including a brother dreadnought.  I'll use these to test the paint scheme i have in mind before i raid my armoury (bitz box) to customise the rest.

Watch this space brothers.  The Redemption Crusade is about to take flight.

All primed and ready for painting/re-painting.

And so it starts!  Quick sneak peek of all the models I've built and primed, or going to be repainting to create my Crusade!  So we have the Primaris Marines from the box set that my FLGS did a good deal with me on.  Plus one of the "easy build" Redemptor dreads.  Then I've gone through my army boxes to find models I don't use often for my other other armies, and even an old skool predator with metal parts i cobbled together!

Lots of HH style marines to repaint, and the less chaos looking chaos marines.  LOTS of painting to do, debating if i'm going to attempt free hand crosses, or just get transfers!  I'll be posting updates once i've finished squads.

Here's some pics from the story so far, a lot of tidy up work to be done and basing, plus awaiting some transfers as my freehand skills seemed, lacking!  But the Crusade has started!

Added some fog of war via my dirty vaping habit!

Once the new test tube Templar's have been completed i'll be moving onto my crusader squads.

I have to say, good work on the Crusade so far.

I feel your pain with freehand crosses. Mine always suck. Check out the link pinned to the top for resources for decals. I have the Armor Cast set in red, black and blue. Just FYI though, if you ever intend to do the red, put them on a VERY light background, as they do not show up well over black.

I did look at the armour cast one, but the shipping costs to the UK are rather steep! Has anyone use the ones from Veni Vidi Vici as they are UK based and look decent?

Several people on here use them (I need to order some) and I have yet to hear a bad review of them. Not sure how the red cross holds up over black though.

More progress last night!

Done the bases, not, entirely happy.  Not sure if i should drybrush something over the sand effects?  Perhaps a sandy colour?  Also started on the Inceptors! My fog of war effects work well with their jump packs!
