Auras and charging.

Recommended Posts

Came up in a Facebook group.

Shrike has an aura that grants rerolls to charges for any unit equipped with a jump pack.

The question I have is when do you check to see if the unit is in range of that aura?

Is it the beginning of the phase when you declare charges, or when you actually roll the dice?

My tactic is to charge with Shrike first to disable Overwatch for the targeted unit and have Vanguard Vets follow him in once he is engaged (which also disables it because a unit is within 1").

So, if a unit was within 6" at the beginning of the phase, but Shrike's charge takes him outside of 6", does the unit still get the reroll?

Unlike in previous editions, you don't declare everything at the start of the phase - in 8th edition, you fully resolve everything in sequence.

So for Shrike + another unit, if charging would take Shrike out of 6" of the other unit, you won't get the bonus when that second unit declares their charge later in the phase.

An interesting corollary to this is that you get to see the results of each Charge before having to declare the next, so if a key unit fails its Charge, you don't have to try to charge their supporting units in, too.

Shrike has to be within 6", but his base is just over an inch wide, and he can be just under an inch from the target. So you can do it with an 8" charge, which is still pretty good.

All fair points, but much like the observation that you could play both of his abilities if you were looking to 'fork' your attack and had Shrike along with more than one assault team, they're also much more Tactica than rules interpretation.

Yeah, my initial question was just on at what point you measure distance from Shrike for the reroll ability. I have already figured out a few ways to make it work.
