THE LIBER CLUSTER II

Oh hey, the ritual worked! :biggrin.:

So my computer's been down for the last little while, but swapping out the broken bits a change in the incense we use during the ritual of booting up seems to have got it working again becalmed the raging machine spirit.  For now, at least. :ermm:

The next few days are going to be really busy for me, but I'll catch up with what's gone on in my absence at the start of next week, Omnissiah willing. :biggrin.:

Are you still taking applicants for the Renegades? I got an idea for a chapter but not a lot of time to jot down an Liber - I'll probably be free either tomorrow or Friday to write.

@Cryptix - Yes sure, the more the merrier. 500-750 words for the chapter and you're good!

OK, sorry that took so long. Again.:pinch:

Kelborn: That battle you've got is fantastic, but seems to stop halfway through.

The idea was that the battle would be over and concluded in one story, so then the next writer would move on to the next planet and the next battle.

I'm suddenly horribly aware that I didn't actually clarify that earlier on, so the fault is mine. Many apologies!

I shall spend an appropriate time in the Pain Mitten as penance.

On another note I've been chipping away at a fairly interesting idea concerning the Corsairs.

To sum it up I've been writing about the Plague Marine contingents among the Corsairs. Basically Azahan plays to their delusions, pretending to perceive the false reality they believe is real.

They're former Singala Marines either maimed in prior engagements or refused to succumb to organ failure.

I like to think Azahan doesn't see these 'creatures' as genuine Astartes. They're fairly convincing replications yet lack the human aspect... Ya know, cause they're vat-grown.

I've got a fair bit written down relating to this idea. I wanted ask for your opinion considering you contributed the Corsairs.

I must admit this has me confused, particularly the underlined section.

I didn't know the Corsairs had plague marines, let alone delusional ones .:ermm:

Also Azahan was a place, rather than a person - you might have meant Lord Alaxin (I only just now noticed how similar those names are, though :wallbash:) but I'm still a bit at sea regarding plague marines.

EDIT:

Oh dang, there's another page to read. Another ten minutes in the Pain Mitten for me!

Are you still taking applicants for the Renegades? I got an idea for a chapter but not a lot of time to jot down an Liber - I'll probably be free either tomorrow or Friday to write.

Certainly!

The more the merrier - I look forward to seeing your idea.

@Ace Debonair: Hey, when you get a moment, could you give a synopsis on the Corsairs leader? I'm typing up a piece describing his manipulation of Plague Marines but I'm worried I'm betraying his character.

Thanks in advance.

I'll write one up when I get chance.

To be honest though, the Corsairs haven't yet made their presence known - I'm unsure Lord Alaxin has even made contact with other warbands, let alone started manipulating anyone.

I'm planning on the Corsairs making a fairly big impact when they arrive, but that's going to be some time after we get these mini-campaigns sorted out.

Oh, then I'll return to my scrapbook. Should have asked to be certain before writing it.

Glad, that you guys like it. :)

Hope that I can do the Golems some justice, as well.

EDIT:

As promised, a quick summary of Lord Alaxin (and the general mindset of the Corsairs), for everyone to enjoy/ignore as you see fit. :happy.:

- The Corsair King: A brief overview of Lord Alaxin and his followers -

The Corsairs of Azahan were, at their very best, considered almost legendary. But those days are long behind them. People now either speak of them as something fearsome from long ago, unaware of their continued existence, or as something that used to be terrifying before they got old, and weak.

That is, at present, the Corsairs' legacy: either half-forgotten or thought of as a pathetic joke.

Their current leader, Lord Alaxin, is himself very old. He was a Son of Horus during the Heresy, survived the Scouring, and was there when the Warband split away from the Black Legion to become the Corsairs. He was in the first wave of troops that first set foot on the Daemon World of Azahan, and he's fought innumerable enemies on innumerable battlefields. Alaxin survived it all, and wasn't even a Captain until after the 12th Black Crusade, when Abaddon sent the Corsairs on a suicide mission to the Liber Cluster as penance for their refusal to follow his orders.

Seeing the chance to turn the Corsairs' legacy around, to save them from their fate of being remembered only as bitter, weak old men, Alaxin quickly won his way up the ranks of his brothers as much through his rhetoric as his fighting prowess.

And while Alaxin is technically an old man, surrounded by other old men, he is certainly not weak. He has immeasurable experience of war, knows how to hit the Imperium where it hurts and get away with it, and fights like a nightmare made manifest.

The Corsair King has seen the rise and fall of what was once a great warband, and he wants another chance at reclaiming the glory the Corsairs once had.

Alaxin knows full well that the Corsairs will probably never make it back to the Eye of Terror, much less ever have the chance to go against the Despoiler. They might not even manage to conquer the entire Cluster. The warband has, really, been on the brink of death and defeat for centuries, and even with their renewed purpose, age and wounds limit the strength of the veteran Corsairs, every bit as much as recklessness and inexperience limit the strength of their new recruits.

But the goal - the real goal, under all the bravado about taking the fight to Abaddon when they're strong enough and all the talk of conquering the galaxy, boils down to this: The Corsairs refuse to be forgotten. They will not be a synonym for weakness. If the Corsairs are to die, they will do so with the eyes of the Dark Gods on them, and they will be known as the stuff of legend.

Arguably, Alaxin and his Captains are already the stuff of legend. Over ten thousand years, the Corsairs have acquired a lot of interesting artifacts, either looted from the Imperium, taken from those who would challenge the Corsairs, or built by their own hands through artifice and ritual.

Lord Alaxin himself has no fewer than four Daemon weapons, rumoured to be rewards personally granted by the Dark Gods themselves. The oldest and most famous of these is the Daemon axe, Lurian, which whispers endless secrets, lies and promises to whomever bears it. Alongside this fabled axe, his personal armoury contains a daemonic chainsword called Tirilax that produces a chorus of unearthly screams each time it takes a life, a bolter called Scurvoth that fires sticky, corrosive bolts of daemonic acid, and a shield called Souldirge that was manufactured by the Daemonforges of Tagaroth the Awakened and is said to be able to turn aside an attack from any weapon.

As far as religion goes, Alaxin looks at the Gods as patrons and another weapon to be used in the quest for glory. They are worthy of worship and respect, but they are, ultimately, tools for the Corsairs to use as much as the Corsairs are tools for the Gods to wield. The Corsair King doesn't favour any one of the Chaos Gods over the others, although some of his followers have their own preferences.

--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--

When it comes to how the Corsairs are going to operate in the Cluster, Alaxin's methods are going to be pretty simple.

First, he's going to make an impact - something the Imperium cannot ignore. Something that will make the entire Cluster sit up and take notice. (I currently have a small handful of ideas on how he could accomplish this, all very much WIP right now)

Then (and probably only then), he's going to reach out to any and all heretics and renegades that he can find and make them a simple deal - you can fight alone and die alone, or work with the Corsairs and remind the Imperium why Chaos is called the Great Enemy.

What will happen after that is yet to be decided. :laugh.:

Pierce the Hive, Hunt the Fallen, Stop the Xeno’s

The Blades of the Lion Chapter Master Juren Revan Wold was viewing a viewscreen in his private quarters. The information running across it was disturbing to the Son of the Lion, A warp rift had opened and a member of the fallen had fallen out of it in the deepest parts of the hive, the IFF beacon denoted the Legionnaire to be clad in Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armour but the weapon signals were corrupted and even with the fallen within the hive they still had to work with the Sons of Morrigan to stop the Sza’koa. A plan formulated within his head with the available information he had and he began to call out into the vox systems a stream of orders to both his chapter and the Chapter he was assessing for either taint or heretical elements within the relatively new to the Libre cluster Primaris marines.

The Combined Astartes Ground forces moved on the Capital Hive of Soldeux, wreckage of the Sza’koa Xenos vehicles were strewn around the battlefield intelligence reports stated that this hive had held out the longest forcing the Xenos to loot imperial vehicles like a common ork. However the Blades of the Lion had been told to breach the hive and place teleportation beacons within whilst the Primaris Sons of Morrigan were told to distract the Xenos until a flanking force from within the hive strikes at the aliens rear but they did not know of the hunt for the Fallen within the Hive, as the two forces split up the White Scars successors truly began to show their heritage as their hovercraft began to go faster than what was safe for their engines as the hunters were let off their leash and began to get into position for the attack whilst the Lion’s sons breached the hive and began their flanking manoeuvre.

Within the hive a black Dark Angels Cataphractii terminator stalked the halls of the Hive unaware of the vengeful Unforgiven Astartes that are headed to pierce the hive and capture him… but even the Unforgiven didn’t know he was a loyalist that infiltrated the Ranks of Luther’s Fallen Angels to survive the purge of Loyalist Astartes within the Fallen and sabotage as much as he could from within to help the loyalist cause, but as time wore on the battle of Three Armies is about to begin, the winner of this conflict will decide the fate of the star system.

(Sorry this took me so long to do I got a bit of writers block but I hope this is good I decided that a member of the fallen, falling out of the warp would be a good motivator for the veteran liberate chapter this was actually one of three different culmination battles that I was working on for a campaign with 5 possible battles after the first battle that would be moved onto depending on the victor in the first and second battles. my writing skills aren't that good but however I still hope you guys like this)

Ah, so the Great Hunt continues!

Most interesting! :biggrin.:

It just needs a conclusion and we're good to move on.

If you don't wish to write the conclusion (writer's block is a horrible thing) then one of us can take over. :happy.:

-=-=-=-=-=-

Meanwhile - I've been working on the second mini-campaign a bit.

It's going to be slightly larger in scale than the first, so that the six factions involved won't be running into each other immediately.

I've got a list of worlds* for four adjacent systems in the Cluster, and the current plan in my head is for the loyalists to start in one system, the renegades in another and the Chaos forces in a third.

The first and second battles for each faction will take place in those initial systems. The loyalists will fight chaos cults and bands of insurgents. The renegades and heretics, however, will be battling Imperial Guard, Navy, and AdMech forces as they look to further their own particular agendas.

After the first two rounds, everyone will come together for a final showdown in the last, centre-most system. Either one or two battles apiece, depending on how the rest of the Campaign goes.

I have no idea if this sounds like a good idea or a disaster waiting to happen. :laugh.:

I'm happy to hear any opinions, questions or thoughts on the subject - or on the first mini-campaign too if you like. :happy.:

*At this point I think I probably qualify as Chief Cartographer of the Cluster with the number of planets I've invented for it.

I'll have to make myself a fancy badge or something to denote the office. :tongue.:

Something ele for the cluster perhaps.

Knight House Gardial

The scions of House Gardial are a dour and insular lot, seldom seeking any company other than that of their own kin. Only in the sole company of their blood do their facades drop, and the halls of Tynerios are said to echo with mirth when no stranger is there to hear it. The first loyalty of any member of the house is to their relatives, they will let nothing come between them. A usually cold and reserved demeanour has been observed to switch in an instant to a controlled if sometimes suicidal rage when others of their house are threatened. For all that they are still subjects of the Imperium. They will answe the call to war when summoned.

The blood of Gardial is permeated far more than usual with commoner stock. This is due to a drastic response to genetic insularity that nearly damned the house in times past. Thr practice of the ‘earth-wed’ is still practiced today in as large numbers as then. Though these ‘ironblades’ may never be wholly accepted within the innermost bonds of the Knight-pilots, they are treated with the same protections by wrath as their highborn fellows. The House is bound to their fate by blood.

Often in their responses to their fellow world’s cries for aid they find themselves facing insurrectionists and cultist hordes. They have learnt atypical caution from this. Would be rebels have in the oast diplayed combinations of ingenuity and desparation which bled the house sorely when underestimated. Their larger engines will hunt ceaselessly for the largest masses and fortified stong points, crushing their foes in body and spirit. Their armiger-pattern chassis’ often take their own slice of flesh. The ironblades afford the house many pilots for such engines, and the hunters hound their prey through evrery obstacle, seldom ceading until their packs have cut down every foe in sight. Specialist groupings, the ‘shrouds’ are assigned the duties of seeking and eliminating demagogues and leaders amongst those who would see the Imperium fall. Some say that while the larger engines form Gardial’s face and Gardial’s fist, it is amingst its ironblade armigers where its true killing power lies.

Beren: I'm liking the sound of Knight House Gardial. It's like an entire knight house that works on the 'Distraction Carnifex' principle - let the scary stuff take all the focus while the less obvious threats do maximum damage. :happy.:

Alrighty, so it seems campaign 1 has stalled out.
I'll take the blame for that, I should have been more clear about how I'd intended it to work. My bad, many apologies.

Kelborn, WG101 - if you like I can edit up your submitted battles so they cover the entire battle for each planet. Failing that, is there any ETA on when your own edits are inbound?

On another note, I'm thinking the best way forward is to start mini-campaign 2, if only to save everyone else from twiddling their thumbs for much longer.

So, on with the show:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

---- Campaign 2: An Enemy Revealed ----

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the Centralis Subsector is The Nine's Vigil, a close-knit cluster of nine stars. (Scholar's note: These stars were named long ago by the Blackjaw Kindred, possibly in relation to their Chapter's particular views on the Primarchs) Surrounded completely by perpetual clouds of glowing, golden mist that are known to scramble gellar fields and cause a myriad of other unpleasant malfunctions in machines, The Nine's Vigil serves primarily as a landmark of sorts, and is considered by many local Imperial Citizens to be a manifest sign of The Emperor's power.

This area of space is watched over by The Serrian, a large, Imperial-held fortress of unknown manufacture. It is heavily guarded at all times and many battles have been fought in the space around this gigantic, armoured artifact.

Recent events - a certain stirring of renegades and heretics - have prompted patrolling Companies from the Lords Inviolate and Black Falcons Chapters of Space Marines to arrive in the nearby Vengasi system to investigate.

Two companies of Space Marines is a match for almost any threat.

But the threats rising around The Nine's Vigil may be too much for even the mighty Space Marines to face...

--Vengasi System--
(The Lords Inviolate and Black Falcons start here - defend the Imperium through courage and vigilance!)

Notable Worlds:

Vengasi Prime: Hive World - large military population, many regiments. The Governor is suspected to harbour dreams of independence, and at least some of the regiments are sworn to serve him directly. Rumours of heretical and deviant cults springing up on Vengasi Prime have drawn Imperial attention.

Vengasi Secundus: Hive World - almost entirely military population, yet poorly defended. The regiments of Vengasi Secundus spend far more time on other worlds than at home. Automated defences on the outskirts of the hives are considered deterrent enough against attack. Nevertheless, rumours of insurgent activity targetting this world persist - most likely the agents of Penumbra are at work on some despicable scheme.

--Ingos System--
(Followers of Mabinos & The Blackened Fist are here - purge the weak and corrupt the strong!)

Notable Worlds:

Plathmar: Shrine world - enormously religious and pious population, very big on rooting out heresies. Distinguishing actual heretical cults from the usual storm of wild accusations is a difficult task, and the world is known to have drawn the attention of the Inquisition more than once. These cults are almost certain to exist, if one only looks in the right places. They could prove to be valuable allies, or at least manipulated into fighting alongside you...

Pocko's World - Prison Planet - home to one of the Cluster's largest and most densely populated prisons, wherein each ward has it's own distinct culture and affiliation with one ward or another is vital for survival as they wage low-key war against each other in an unending struggle for dominance. Pocko's World produces penal regiments, often well-thought of for their grit and indefatigable nature.

--Almun System--
(The Oneiroi and Wyvernspawn start here - operate from the shadows and take back the Cluster for yourselves!)

Kerephelos Beta: Shrine world - home to a particularly towering cathedral in the shape of a throne, well defended by numerous armoured regiments. Kerephelos Beta is also home to many wealthy nobles, many of whom gained wealth through careful management of the world's famous textile industries. Power struggles are commonplace amongst the noble classes, and perhaps the more ambitious of them can be convinced to offer their resources to your cause, provided you can take care of some rivals for them...

Almun 4: agri world - wracked every dozen years or so by 'sunstorms', periods of intense, boiling heat that burn the land dry, this agri world still produces plenty of resources for the surrounding systems. A useful link in the Imperial supply chain, and so very much of long-term benefit to any gathering would-be insurgents. Guarded by two infantry regiments who are famously fierce combatants, eager for victory and glory.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

How this is going to work:

So for the start of this Campaign, I'll need six writers, who will each volunteer to write a complete battle (anywhere from 300-500 words) featuring one of the following:

The Lords Inviolate battling heretical cults on Vengasi Prime or combatting insurgent raiders on Vengasi Secundus
The Black Falcons battling heretical cults on Vengasi Prime or combatting insurgent raiders on Vengasi Secundus

The Followers of Mabinos causing havoc on Plathmar or corrupting/slaughtering Pocko's World
The Blackened Fist causing havoc on Plathmar or corrupting/slaughtering Pocko's World

The Oneiroi doing dirty deeds on Kerephelos Beta or making a raid on Almun 4
The Wyvernspawn doing dirty deeds on Kerephelos Beta or making a raid on Almun 4

Each writer will pick one of the listed planets to do their battle on - let's try and organise ourselves so that Every Chapter battles on a different planet.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will also happily accept any other suggestions for planets so long as the enemies stay as non-power armour humans.

Once this wave of battles is done, I'll list the consequences of the battles, and then we'll be off to another system where all the factions will actually meet up.

So if you want in, then volunteer your name and which of the above Chapters (and planets) you want to write about. :happy.:

I'll sort out deadlines and the like once I've got some volunteers - I'm horribly aware it's that time of year again, and since I work in retail I basically have no hobby time at all until next year now. In short, I'm likely to be quite lenient with deadlines. :laugh.:

TL;DR: Campaign 2 is a go, who wants in?:tongue.:

Sorry for my late reply.

Ace, I'd be very grateful, if you could cover my previous battle. Tbh, I only thought about the void war, now I'm lacking a cool idea for ground stuff.

Though I got plenty to do, please let me know, if something needs to be covered or rather if I can be of help.:)

Right, so I was writing this in the form of the Inquisitorial Report as I usually do, but it occured to me that this didn't really explain what was going on. So should I write it more in the form of prose, or just include a spoiler with a brief explanation.

Not a problem brothers, I know how busy life can get this time of year.

I'll have a quick play with the given submissions and turn them into completed battles on your behalf. :happy.:

Everyone else:

Glad to have you all onboard! I'm not going to set a solid deadline for these battles, what with December looming large on the horizon and all. :ermm:

That said, let's try and get this first wave done in time for the New Year, if only for the challenge of it. :biggrin.:

Beren:

I'd say go with the prose approach - it's OK for the Imperial authorities to be a bit lost on what the Oneiroi are up to, but clarity for the reader's sake is generally always a good thing. :happy.:

So, confirmed missions so far:

Blackened Fist attacking Plathmar - Machine God

Followers of Mabinos attacking Pocko's World - [uNCLAIMED]

The Oneiroi attacking Kerephelos Beta - Beren

The Wyvernspawn attacking Almun 4 - [uNCLAIMED]

And then there's the two Loyalist Chapters with their choices of destination, waiting to be claimed.:happy.:

The restaurant was a renowned one, oft frequented by Kerephelos Beta’s upper classes. Thus it was always full. Always busy. Not in the raucous, filthy and overcrowded manner of the the the lower class taverns elsewhere in the city. Rather, the air was suffused with the murmer of light conversation and the clinking of cutlery. For Taleer Vraynek it might as well be silent. The entirety of her focus lay upon the person sitting at the opposite end of the table. Her personal guards stood only metres away. Too far to save the noble if she choose foolishly. After all, her fellow diner had been her trusted confidant for months. She was privy to everything: suffocated ambition; bitter rivalries; a simmering envy and most likely the entirety of her House’s security protocals. Taleer’s decision could raise her to glory or simply end her life in the next minutes. The agent, for there was little doubting she was one, still wore that wry smile on her face. The same that had been used to greet her this morning, and many mornings past. Her eyes though, they had turned to steel. A nod. A single simple nod. That was all it took.

“Perhaps, a pilgrimage my lady. The Cathedral of the Throne contains many wonders after all. I think you could distract yourself from the affairs of your family for days within its vaunted halls.”

With that, the imposter calmly strode into the crowd. The guards had no reason for concern. Taleer did not move for some time. Then she ordered the dessert of the day.

. . .

Meriac Manse burned. The defenses which House Vraynek had spent a fortune upon sat lifeless as the Valenartan soldiers sprinted past. The only light within the mansion was that of flames and weapons fire. A shuttle careened wildly into the air only to to have a missile smash into its cockpit. Flames belched from the shattered canopy as the ship plunged towards the ground. Following orders like the loyal hounds they were, the killers stormed every building and slaughtered indiscriminatley. In the Manse’s communications tower the Vraynek patriach stabbed at consoles indiscrimanetley. For the last minutes the roar of heavy calibre weapons had boomed from the corridors outside. He could hear his guards screaming in terror and pain. For a second, just a second, the jamming signal was broken. For a second, just a second, the patriach’s relieved face was broadcast from the ruins of the merchant household. For a second, just a second, a power armoured figure in purple and black could be seen reaching for the doomed noble.

. .

The Inquisition does not tolerate those who consort with traitors. House Slightsand will always come to the aid of its allies. A criminal syndicate that loses the support of its patrons will fall to be replaced by another. Faith is always an acceptable excuse.

By the dawn of the second week since the sack of Meriac Manse a house had fallen. The Inquisition had seen that House Valenart was destroyed. Personnel bearing implants associated with the Penumbra had been found amongst their ranks. Heretical documents were found within their vaults. Their peers simply muttered how they had always known that an ill fate would befall the notorious blackguards. House Vraynek was hit hard to be sure, but a single mansion wrecked does not tear apart a web of trade and holdings that took centuries to build. Not while someone still holds the reins. Not when somebody else was willing to take the brunt of the cost. House Slightsand was a house good repute and well known for its loyalty to those who befriended it. Its credit would be used to rebuild any damage to Vraynek holdings and through a curious little legal loophole, the far nore extensively damaged assets that had formerly belonged to Valenart. Slightsand’s status and wealth would be lessened, its position on the markets weakened. Vraynek would take the Valenart wealth in reparation for the harm inflicted upon them. In particular, the lone Vraynek scion not to die within Meriac’s halls or fall to an assassins blade elsewhere. Taleer Vraynek had been protected from the scourging by the vigilant faithful who guarded their holy cathedral with tank and lasgun. Most attributed her protection to her piety. A holy pilgrimage had brought the sight of the God Emperor upon her. In time the removal of one great rival, the weakening of the other, and the wealth addedd to her coffers could make her one of the more significant figures upon Cephelos. Vast amounts of wealth would change hands and no small portion of it would slip into the grasps ofthose waiting in the shadows. Favours could be bought, items requisitioned. For now though, the Oneroi would wait and watch.
