Think Tank: Non-BL material for writing Chaos

I watched Annihilation yesterday, and both the visuals and the way in which characters describe what's going on made me think of Chaos. So I thought this would be a good chance to discuss what people draw on besides BL works when it comes to the Empyrean.

Obviously HP Lovecraft looms large over all this, and understandably. He had a fantastic grasp on how to articulate things looking and feeling fundamentally wrong.

Delving into more modern work, I've found Charles Stross' Laundry Series invaluable, as it gets right into the metaphysics as well as serving up eldritch horrors with eyes full of glowing worms. Iain M. Banks likewise had a real gift for strangeness, scale and grotesquerie.
