Sammael on Corvex, Metal vs. Finecast

Hi all,

Looking to add Sammael to my army and was wondering which model people preferred, the finecast or the metal one.  I heard that the finecast quality is to great and the robe is prone to breaking.  The metal model is harder to find and looks like it would require some pinning.  Does anyone have experience with either or both?

Thanks!

The sword on the finecast is the thing that’s a pain, basically a long spindly mess made of eggshells. Robes and cape are close behind though. I’ve also seen them with a mess of resin between the armor plates that has to be carved out before it can be assembled.

There are exactly two good reasons to get the finecast version over metal: you don’t end up with a giant brick of metal on top of a spindly flight stand, and they still make the finecast version.

Yeah, there is something to be said for the finecast one being easy to order...

Does the sword just break off all the time?  Debating whether I should just try to swap it our right away.

And regarding the mass of resin on the armour, where is it that I'll need to watch out for?  Also, how is the bike assembly?  Is it easy to do Sammael and the bike in two separate parts for painting ease, then glue them together?

At least the top half of Sammael is pretty separate from the bike and can be left off until you’re done painting. Mass of resin if it’s a bad cast is usually going to be on the back of the eagle on the front or on the inside of the armor plates on the prow. The prow has two separate plates that attach to the side and then the eagle on the front hides the join.

I’ve heard of people more dedicated than I drilling almost entirely down the length of the sword and pinning it in place so it doesn’t snap in the middle. I don’t have that kind of patience or precision but you can try it.

I just finished assembling the metal model I got second hand (half price of GW RRP).

Yes it weighs a tonne! It didn't come with any flight stand and struggles on my other speeder stands so I'm yet to work out what to do.

I'm gonna try and paint Sammy's torso arms and cloak seperate to the bike. Gluing these parts together means you have to squeeze and 'pop' him in to place as his right hand-wrist connection is tight due to his back-seat connection - if that makes sense??

I haven't pinned anything yet but I'm not planning on heaps of gaming with him - I've got Sableclaw for that.

Metal is easy to strip too so buying second hand is no worries. That as well as no resin casting issues means I'd vote metal if you can nab one

Tip: If you fit a washer of just the right size on the "arm" of a speeder flight stand Sammael will rest nicely on it, spreading the load and balancing the model (metal version).  The sword is a pain with both versions, I think I've exhausted the amount of times I can repair it now, may just magnetise a plastic replacement.

First thing I did with mine was swap the sword out for the one on the DA upgrade sprue. It isn't exactly the same but it is close enough that you would never notice the difference once I get it painted.

I'd also like to add some comments as well. I have a metal Sammael (got it from a friend because he randomly had one?), and I have to say this. For gaming purposes, finecast all day, every day.

While the metal model has NO chances of issues the finecast does when it comes to bubbles/holes/massive flash, the finecast for is better for these reasons:

- The weight: Metal Sammael weighs more than a Land Raider, despite being much smaller. Because of that, I'm honestly terrified of using Sammael in a game because, even though I have a very strong pin between Corvex and the flight stand, I'm still worried the weight of that brick of a model falling off the flight stand and breaking if I place it on a bad angle on a board. Or falling off the flight stand and breaking my other models, or worse, my opponent's models.

- Metal model paint syndrome: The paint rubs off constantly, and annoys the :cuss out of me.

Due to both of these, I'm legitimately planning on getting the finecast version and using that for gaming purposes, and having the metal one be in the display at my FLGS.

There's also another.... issue people tend to not talk about with Sammael's model, both versions. Likely due to the sword being more notable, but he has kind of a.... Gap between his waist where his torso and legs connect. When I was dry-fitting him when the model was unpainted, I didn't notice, but after I painted him, I could clearly see through his stomach from the side. So you'll likely need to make a wad of greenstuff and stick it between his torso and legs.

Sooo...I should have listened and tried to find the metal one.  Instead I ordered the finecast one off the GW site...  What a garbage model to work with for cleaning mold lines, resin bits etc.  Word of advice for anyone thinking of getting this model, learn from my mistakes and get the metal one!

That's good to know about the green stuff in between his waist.  I tried dry fitting it today and it seemed okay, but I'll be sure to watch out for it when I glue Sammael's body to the legs.

The piece I still haven't been able to get to fit right is the front eagle.  Do the two side covers join flush at the front and the eagle rests in between them?  Or is there suppose to be a gap and the eagle fits over the gap?

I've been searching online, but any pics greatly appreciated.  The instructions are not only too dark, but very unclear.  A photo of the front of the model taken from underneath and from above so I can see how the eagle fits would be greatly appreciated.  Fun fact, while trying to fit the eagle in, the tail feathers and top half broke...  Really hating this model.

I had a lot of troubles with the front eagle too. The trick is to heat the tail part up in almost boiling water so it bends a little and then ease it onto the front of the bike. Not sure if it will help you, but posting for reference in case others go through the same thing
