Solar Auxilia 3000 points all mechanized

Hey guys, wanted to share my idea of a full mechanized Auxilia. The list is for an upcoming event, and I don‘t want to be too harsh, but that‘s not easy with SA :)

And comments are welcome, since I don‘t have any experience with playing Solar Aux.

Solar2nd try

Solar Auxilia

Tank Commander 55

Lord Marshal: artificer armour; Paragon blade; displacer matrix; grav-wave generator 150

Auxilia Infantry Tercio

• 10 Veletarii: Prime; 9 Veletarii 115

• 10 Flamer Auxiliaries: Sergeant; 9 Flamer Auxiliaries 125

• Dracosan Armoured Transport: hull-mounted Demolisher cannon; flare shield; armoured ceramite; pintle-mounted multi-laser 220

• Dracosan Armoured Transport: hull-mounted Demolisher cannon; flare shield; armoured ceramite; pintle-mounted multi-laser 220

Auxilia Infantry Tercio

• 10 Veletarii: Prime; 9 Veletarii 115

• Dracosan Armoured Transport: hull-mounted Demolisher cannon; flare shield; armoured ceramite; pintle-mounted multi-laser 220

5 Ogryn Charonites 295

Leman Russ Assault Squadron

• Leman Russ Incinerator: hull-mounted lascannon 195

• Leman Russ Incinerator: hull-mounted lascannon 195

• Leman Russ Incinerator: hull-mounted lascannon 195

Malcador Heavy Tank: hull-mounted lascannon; 2 sponson-mounted lascannon; flare shield; armoured ceramite 310

Stormhammer Super-heavy Assault Tank: co-axial lascannon; armoured ceramite 590

3.000 points

Marshall goes with the Ogryns in the Stormhammer and wrecks face. The rest is relatively selfexplaining I think.

Cheers

You need a Lasrifle Section to 'unlock' a Flamer Section. Veletarii don't unfortunately.

Stormlords are the transport Baneblades, not the Stormhammer.

I'm going to be 'that guy' and repeat what's brought up on every SA list thread: Incinerators are very 'meh', especially when you're probably going to struggle a bit with anti-tank, but they look great and CHOOM automatically gives you the Emperor/Chaos' blessings, so.

That Malcador is asking for a Lightning to the face as your only true anti-tank. Demolisher Dracosans are nice, but in my experience it's not good having to rely on them to take out armour, but they can get the job done.

The Stormlord's not a bad piece of kit, but the SA really doesn't lack in the infantry-killing department. As poor as they are footslogging, I think 590pts is a huge investment for Ogryns and a Warlord who's likely going to get his face caved in by a Praetor 1v1 anyway. Paragon Blades on Lord Marshals are one of the biggest traps in the book unless you're bringing a Household Retinue with Power Axes.

Thanks for the reply, I feel like a total noob now :biggrin.:

So back to the drawing board.

Don't get me wrong, SA and this list could easily do well enough - that much armour is nothing to scoff at - but if people start bringing out their own Lords of War or Death Stars it's liable to run into some major issues. Plus the pound investment for them is so substantial I'm of the belief a fair amount of optimistation should occur even for fluffy lists.

Do you have any models already?

Are there any models you're really eager to take for aesthetics/fluff?

I'm guessing you're keen on maintaining the mechanised theme? Not that it's a bad thing, SA doing it better than most.

Thanks. In addition to the above (minus the Stormhammer, which I don't own) I got 2 Lasrifle Sections, 2 Vanquisher, the Medics, 4 rapiers (2 multilaser, 2 quad launcher) and the Malcador Infernus.

I'm not totally set on the mech theme, it should just be a well rounded force. Also there is a budget for new SA toys, if some are highly recommended ;)

The SA are going to get a new (proto Dracosan?) transport in a while, which will make it easier to mech up without spending many, many points.

The trick with SA is that you can take 3 Dracosans with a single Squad; so for each Lasrifle Section, you can take 3 Dracosans, of which 2 can be Demolishers. For the cost of a Flamer Section, you can nearly take a Dracosan with Democannon. Also, the

Regarding Dracosans; it depends on how aware you are with regards to the amount of melta in the meta, but Armoured Ceramite is a heavy investment; with the exception of the Stormhammer, you've got 80pts invested in something that I find doesn't do anything (because of the concept of everyone not taking Armoured Ceramite, Melta became worthless - when I first quit, the meta was coming round to taking the odd melta weapon, such as Suicide Rhinos).

Charonite Squads are slow. They have no ranged offense, and are Typhon/Democannon bait, and as Dracosan or Arvus are not assault transports, they are going to struggle to get there, and the Dead Man Switch can be randomised onto your General. Charonite Squads need something like a Stormlord to jump out of. (What do you mean, go in the Stormhammer? It doesn't have a Transport Capacity, and lacks the Transport type)

The Stormhammer absolutely competetively sucks.

- The Sponsons cannot all fire unless the same unit unless the unit is directly in a small window to either side of the tank; at the same time that the Battlecannons cannot assist. This means that for all of it's dakka, you're limited to 3 BS3 Multilasers to take down a unit at the side. In a real world sense, it seems pretty sensible to have 360 degree arc of support, but that it cannot focus in one direction is an optimization complaint; you're paying points for something you're not using.

- Taking the Lascannon as Coax is bad. It's the only omni-directional Lascannon available to the tank, but it removes the Accuracy Benefit for the main gun (even with 7" template, you're going to want to be accurate to get the most use out of it), as Co-Ax weapons give a reroll to hit on a BS3 tank. BS3 Multilasers have an 87.5% chance to give you a reroll.

- It is 600pts with no contribution to significant Anti-tank.

As awesome as the tank is, I'd never expect to see it in a competitive list. The Shadowsword packs a Destroyer Weapon (thumbs up, S-grade, Triple A, 5 Stars), while the Stormblade packs 2 S8 AP2 blasts or a S10 10" Primary blast, which is still capable of vehicle hate for much less points.

Leman Russ are super-expensive for not having any-AT. They can do okay vs Light Vehicles, but 195pts (even without AC) for a 5 Shot Volkite Weapon that can't even remove FNP from Tacticals, let alone ignore their armour is a major waste.

One of the hidden glories of the SA are Techseers with Tempest Grenades. Enginseer and 8 Automata with Grenade Launchers costs 165pts and puts out 8 Haywire Shots a turn, which should kill a Dreadnought or Sicaran every turn, or even put some serious hate on a Leviathan. I've seen a list that had a Stormlord with 16 Grenade Automata, and a TacCommand Section who mobile bunkered up, and it did pretty well.

There is nothing to take on AA. You need significant numbers to make Icarus work (i.e 6 Individual Lasrifle Sections, which means no Dracosans), so the only remaining availability is your Tarantula Hyperios. They're okay, but the AP3 is supremely annoying. Alternatively, there is the Thunderbolt, but that means that you can't afford to go first. It's also up against the Lighting-P, who is the primary AT, for pretty much anything; but Solar Auxilia do have both Grav Rapiers, and 24" Haywire Grenade Launchers, and Shadowsword access that aren't in the overcrowded Fast Attack slots.

Unfortunately, the Solar Auxilia is one of the weakest lists in the game, weaker even than Emperor's Children.

Guess, what my second heresy army is :P

Thanks for your insight, I will tinker around with your advice. I got the Stormhammer mixed up with the Stormlord.

My meta is pretty laid back, almost none competitive gaming. It's more fun and games :)

What would you guys recommend as a LoW for the SA? I would love to included a Macharius model, as they look all fantastic.

Lasrifle Sections are pretty good just because twenty bodies for a hundred points is nothing to scoff at, especially now Custodes are a seen quite frequently and volume of fire is one of their only weaknesses. Buy one Section an Aegis Defence Line with a quad-gun and they'll serve you well. Medics - which you have - are a Emperor-send just because 5+ FNP for such a low cost is excellent. Have them move up when the enemy has been firmly ground into paste, just don't let them get into melee unless it's a delaying action. Take Blast Charges if you're fighting Mechanicum and replace the quad-gun with an ammunition dump.

Vanquishers are good, but they really need a Tank Commander. When they shine, they really shine, but I don't like relying as my sole anti-armour just because the danger of that one shot missing is always looming over me.

Quad launchers need no introduction. They're great. Multilasers are meh unless you proxy them as Destroyers or you're playing Zone Mortalis.

The Malcador Infernus is the staple of 9/10 Solar Auxilia lists. It's also going to be the first thing any opponent who's fought the SA before will shoot at... with good reason. Take one, but if your opponents start rolling their eyes a bit too much don't be afraid to trim the Chemical Ammunition off. It's far from unkillable though.

The Shadowsword is probably the best LoW for the SA. It's one of the cheapest and really shines in a game system where enemy LoWs are very common. The Stormhammer is the fluffiest. It's very expensive (both in points and real world money) but it's nothing to write-off in-game.

I've never used a Macharius, but my understanding is they're pretty 'meh' to 'okay'. If your group's more laid back then I say roll with a Vanquisher variant.
