Redemptors Chapter (homebrew chapter)

Inspired by some of the great work here I have decided to share the models that I've painted for my (constantly evolving) homebrew chapter the Redemptors. I will be regularly updating this area with information and pictures as they develop.

Founding: 2nd Founding/M31
Progenitor Legion: Ultramarines
Known Descendants: none
Homeworld: Arcadia
Allegiance: Loyalist

Notable History:
Stationed in the eastern portion of the Ultima Segmentum during the Great Crusade as a part of the 7th Chapter of the Ultramarines, those that were to become the Redemptors were not on Calth during the atrocities perpetrated by the Word Bearers. They did not hear of the Word Bearers' betrayal until much later, too late to assist in the defense of Calth and the 500 Worlds. When they were finally able to make their way to the Ultramar region, thanks to the beacon of Pharos, they found that a clear divide had formed between those that had been in and around Calth and those that had not.

At the request of the captain leading this group of Ultramarines they were sent back to the eastern portion of the Ultima Segmentum to protect the eastern borders of the Imperium. They could not face to be in the presence of their fellow Ultramarines feeling as if they had failed protect their brothers in their greatest hour of need.

This group of Ultramarines formed a small fortress on the planet of Arcadia. Eventually this planet would become the homeworld of the Redemptors when they became their own chapter during the 2nd Founding in M31. Arcadia was an agriworld with limited industrialization. Referred to as 'The Garden' by its inhabitants, Arcadia was selected by the Redemptors as a place of solace which must be defended from the Imperium's enemies. After the destruction of Calth, Arcadia and the surrounded region was seen as a place of new beginnings for the Ultramarines, who would later become the Redemptors. Arcadia was an idyllic vision of all that was good about Humanity and its expansion throughout the galaxy. The Mechanicum had not been allowed to ravage the land with sprawling factories and forges as it had in so many other planets during the Great Crusade. Arcadia was similar to the 500 Worlds before the destruction of Calth and the Ruinstorm. However, the Edenic way of life on Arcadia was not to last, in M36. During the Age of Apostasy, as the Imperium was wracked by civil war, Arcadia was devastated by an incursion of the Death Guard. Plague and disease followed in their wake. The war was long and brutal, Mortarian's legion had established a foothold on Arcadia and no amount of bombardment would dislodge them from the planet. The Redemptors had to fight on the Death's Guard's terms; brutal trench warfare lasted for many years. Eventually the Death Guard were expelled from Arcadia but the cost was great. Fully half of the Redemptors were killed in the conflict and Arcadia's landscape had changed. No longer did forests and fields cover the planet. Instead, craters and ruined machines of war dotted the landscape. The blight that followed in the steps of the Death Guard eventually dissipated (unlike natural blight, that of Mortarian's sons is quick and instantaneous but seems to require their presence to sustain itself) but the damage had been done. The Redemptors did what they could to help the populace rebuild but Arcadia has never fully recovered. The Adeptus Astartes are both a boon and a curse to a world such as Arcadia. They offer protection but destruction seems to follow them wherever they choose to set up operations. The ravaging of Arcadia led to the Redemptors adopting the saying, "Et in Arcadia ego" in memory of the idyllic world how it once was.

 

The name Redemptors was given to the newly formed Chapter to reflect the self-held belief that they needed to atone for their absence at Calth. Their Chapter heraldry, the Fleur de lis was inspired by the ancient Terran crusader Sharlmaen c. M1. The red face plate and gauntlets represent the Chapter’s self-inflicted censure for not arriving at Calth in time to fight the traitorous Word Bearers. The Redemptors have retained the red marks of shame on their battle plate as a reminder of their past failures. 

The Redemptors zealously defend the eastern area of the Ultima Segmentum from all xenos and traitor legions. In the last few centuries the Redemptors had participated in numerous battles with the T'au empire and the resurgent Death Guard.

I'm always happy to see homebrew chapters.

 

And I like the colour scheme. Though I'd recommend for the eye-lenses to do them with the gem paints. Stormhost Silver + Spiritstone Red would make them pop very obviously from the rest of the red.

Question: According to the current background, your Chapter existed as Ultramarines for the entire period between the Battle for Calth and the 21st Founding, correct?

 

If this is the case, then the Ultramarines could not adhere to the codex astartes while such a sizeable detachment existed. Would it be feasible to amend the story - like getting lost in the warp for a few millennia for example? Or perhaps they are a second founding chapter instead?

Oops, you're right. I didn't think about that. Thank you for catching the date/founding problem.

Working on some more Redemptors. I used gloss varnish on the eyes of the devastator marine, Brother Gaius, but don't like how it turned out. The gloss effect made the eye lenses look too fake. I tried a black pin wash on the recessed area of the eye lenses. I like how that turned out. Now I just need to put a matt varnish on the eye lense of Brother Gaius.

Here are two more Redemptors:
-Brother Gaius is a heavy weapons specialist whose preferred weapon is the lascannon. When the Redemptors are facing enemy armor, Brother Gaius is relied upon to destroy them. The slow moving armor of the Death Guard and the T'au's lightning strikes offer two very different scenarios for Brother Gaius to prepare for.

-Captain Valerian is a veteran captain of the Redemptors. Using shock tactics, his preferred method of dealing with the enemy is to teleport into their back lines. He and his brothers use their power fists and chain fists on the enemy's command squads and artillery.

I've started work on some Grey Knights. I have a squad of Purifiers that I'm working on. I know that they the current meta calls for Strike Squads with falchions but I like the idea of having a 10 man squad with flamers and an assortment of hand-to-hand weapons. I will be fielding 4 heavy flamers, 1 brother with a hammer, 2 with halberds and 3 with falchions. After reading Watchers of the Throne, I feel like it should be lore friendly to have the Redemptors work with a group of Grey Knights to combat the growing Death Guard incursion that they've been facing without the need for mind wipes after the campaign.

If you're going to play with tiny toy soldiers why not have them look cool, right?

I spent the weekend working on a squad of Grey Knight Purifiers to ally with my Redemptors against the Death Guard incursion that they've been facing. They're still WIP but I'm happy with how they're coming along.

The Redemptors have been involved in four month campaign against the Death Guard. The Death Guard have been attacking agri-worlds in the Ultima Segmentum; spreading their disease and rot through the region, affecting food shipments to Ichar IV. High command believes that this is beginning of a major campaign in the region. Normally a protracted campaign would be the responsibility of the Astra Militarum; they excel at grinding down the enemy. However, the Redemptors have been tasked with destroying the enemy because of the rapidity of the Death Guard's attacks. Blitzkrieg is not the usual form of invasion for the Death Guard. This has raised the priority of those responding to include the Adeptus Astartes. The Death Guard have been infecting various planets in the system and then vanishing. Cultists within nearby systems have risen in increasing numbers. The Redemptors have faced the Death Guard, cultists and even demons in the past few months. The news of demonic activity in the region has not escaped the notice of Titan. A force of Grey Knight Purifiers has been sent to the region to ascertain the extent of demonic activity. The demon and heretic will be purged with holy flame.

The Unnumbered Sons have arrived on Arcadia. The Redemptors have welcomed the Primaris provided by Roboute Guilliman; they've bolstered the ranks of the Redemptors who sorely needed the reinforcements. Constant campaigns against the Death Guard and T'au have taken their toll on the chapter. The Redemptors, as descendants of Guilliman, see the Unnumbered Sons as brothers. The Primaris have been battle tested during the Indomitus Crusade and as such can provide immediate support to their Redemptor brothers.

It took a while but I finally finished painting the Primaris portion of the Dark Imperium box set. I really like the Primaris models but I do wish they were built like the older marine models. I haven't tried to convert/customize any of the Primaris models but suspect that once I get more models I'll end up converting them. There have been quite a few people on here making some really inspiring models with the Primaris range.

 

I really like these wounded and dead marines the Games Workshop offers. I think they will make good objective markers.

I've been putting in lot of hours painting. It's inspirational to see all of the good work that people do on here. It fires me up to keep painting. Plus playing games with fully painted models really improves the games for my friends and I.

Nice work! I love checking out home brewed/DIY forces and I like the guilt/somewhat cursed feeling over their heads for Calth and Arcadia. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you, hushrong. I always thought that being an Adeptus Astartes must be part blessing, part curse. The Astartes are the ultimate humans but even they can feel helpless against the tide of xenos, heretics and daemons that assault the Imperium. What I mean is that to become an Astartes you sacrifice individuality, family, desire all to protect humanity. The trade-off being that you become more powerful that any normal human but you aren't able to do what you've been charged to do; protect the Imperium. Worlds, entire populations, must sometimes be sacrificed for the betterment of the Imperium. But the Imperium is comprised of its people. If you're letting entire worlds or systems to die to save the Imperium then what exactly are you saving? Sure, the psycho-indoctrination period that all Astartes go through during recruitment makes it so that new Astartes don't have those questions but after years of constant warfare the toll on an Astartes' psyche must cause even the most staunch Astartes to question his purpose. A Chaplain's sermons can rouse his brothers for battle but in the lulls there must be questions. An Astartes is the ultimate human but still a human.

 

I've been working on a few projects for the Redemptors. Here is a rehab project that I've started on. I had this old Rogue Trader Rhino (when I acquired it it was built as a Razorback) for quite a while. It had four or five layers of paint on it so I thought I'd give the old girl an update. I stripped the paint and added some parts from my parts bin. Unfortunately it still has some missing parts but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

I put in a little more work on this Rogue Trader era Rhino. I haven't been able to find any spare exhaust parts for it so it may have to be completed without them. I haven't done any weathering on vehicles before so I'm experimenting with sponging paint chips and using weathering powder to simulate mud/dirt accumulated on the tracks and hull of the Rhino. I still have a ways to go but I'm liking how the model is turning out. I think for future models I'll tone down the paint chipping.

Reading over your previous post about the blessings/curse of being an astartes, I concur. There are some astartes who think of the people while you have some who do not *cough, Marines Malevolent* in their service to the Imperium. I do think ones pride and honor can take a bit of a toll on them depending on their chapter's culture.

 

Or you can go Chaos and just party across the Imperium like it's someone else's house that you don't need to clean up later. :)

 

 

The classic rhino is also looking good. Years ago when I was a broke student a friend gave me one of their old rhinos that was beat up. Actually it was a beat up Ball predator I made into a rhino but in doing so I had to replace the exhausts stacks too. I had a sentinel lying around that I chopped up for the exhausts. Thought to throw that out there if you are still looking for a replacement.

You can always go Chaos! Just remember once you go Chaos you never go back! Mostly because of the warp overtaking you and the Inquisition won't allow it.

 

I wonder if there is bits seller you can get those from or just buy a cheap, second hand one because you will do a bit of sawing to get those exhaust stacks.

I've been busy painting a whole lot of models, not all of them for the Redemptors. My brother has been getting back into 40K so I've been stripping and painting his Alaitoc Eldar that I painted 20 years ago. I've also been painting some Grey Knights to ally with my Redemptors.

 

Here is a Redemptors company champion I've started kitbashing. Any C&C on the pose would be appreciated. I'm going to add a sword to his left hand. I know a bolt pistol isn't the most powerful weapon on the tabletop but I like it. I gave sculpting a try with the hair on this guy. I'm thinking I might try to sculpt a cape for him as well.

Here are some Grey Knights Paladins that I just finished. Again, I know the swords aren't optimal for the tabletop, I just think they look cool. I magnetized all the weapons so I can change them out whenever I feel the need.

Great to see an update! The Grey Knights are looking great and I honestly float back and forth between those long swords and the halberds as being my favorite. Althought the golden boys really rock halberds.The dual, smaller swords makes me think of a Benihana chef.

 

The champion is also off to a great start! I cannot drop much C&C till I see him with a sword in his hand for the final pose. Any idea which bit you will be going with?

 

Also, do you have a separate log for the Eldar or thinking of posting them on here? Xenos are allowed on the board so show off some of the fruits of your labors!

Thank you. I'll post some more pictures of the company champion once I've added a few more details. I think I'll use a Grey Knights left handed falchion for the handle and mate it to a longer sword. I was also thinking of giving him a cape but I'm not sure now because the only characters that have capes seem to be captains.

Those classic eldar and great paint on them too! They look awesome and I love how've you done the blue robes. THe guardsmen quality is also nice considering that those guys don't stay on tabletops for too long.

 

The tanks are also great. The black you've got on them is great and your highlighting makes it better.

 

I am looking forward to progress on the champ! And who'se to say that your marine can't have a cape. A company champion is no line sergeant so some extra pomp and circumstance wouldn't hurt. Were you thinking about making your own cape or using an existing bit?

That'd be cool since there aren't a ton of good capes readily available (I think). If I could sculpt worth a darn I would. I also like the idea of using paper towel/tissues as well for capes.

Great to see another homebrewed chapter being created and built and a smattering of old school models in there too just to add some more flavour. Love it! :D

As mentioned earlier, the red eye lenses does blend in a little too much, but if you do decide to switch it up, may I recommend an icy blue so they stand out clearly? The paintjob on the Grey Knights especially is superbly smooth and clean, especially on those blades with the blues! Nice one.

The kitbashing is very good indeed along with some great GSing for the hair. Where did that head come from by the way?

Finally, seeing your colour scheme picture above, I felt compelled to help a fellow chapter homebrewer along by taking the liberty of putting your colour scheme through the old Painter that included Wargear and added your symbol for your own personal use:
