Ideas for a 500 point start to escalation

Well I never thought it would happen but after 6000 points of 6th legion, I needed to break from imperial rule and with the new dark eldar codex and rules I got a bit lost in the shady parts of the webway :D

My question to you fellow archons is how would you start this army off for a escalation campaign?

I currently own 10 warriors and a venom.

I am waiting to get paid Friday to expand with a start collecting box most likely, any help getting this started would be huge, and I will try and toss up a plog in the near future as soon as I find a good photo hosting site.

I think if you can find one of the older Start Collecting boxes (with the Raider, Archon and the Kabalite Warriors), go for that one rather than the newer one at this level. Wyches certainly have their uses, but I'm inclined to say Kabalites will do more work for you, and the Raider is just straight-up a better option than a Venom because of it's increased capacity, access to Splinter Racks and anti-vehicle weaponry.

Thanks so should I try and stick with a kabal detachment at first? Then build out into the other two, it feels like at 500 points trying to run the raiding setup of 3 patrols would be really tight on points after 3 HQ picks.

I agree, at smaller points numbers are essential and it's better to focus your plans to start off with. Starting with a single Kabal detachment is a good idea :) I'd take a similar approach to Guard in that you want more bodies to begin with to compensate for the T3/5+, afterwards when you start getting more points to play with you can spice it up with toys and the like :tu:

Hehe the funny thing is I'm seriously enjoying the dark eldar kits right now so more warriors actually has me grinning. So add bodies and raiders seems to be the general idea anything else worth looking at staying in a kabal detachment?

At 500 definitely just stick to one patrol detachment then expand from there. From the looks of it if you managed to find one of the old start collectings (as Halandaar suggests) you should have enough for Archon, ten man squad in a raider, five man squad in a venom, five man squad to accompany the archon/screen him on foot, three reavers. Throw in some blasters on the ten man squad and a cannon on the venom, you're still looking at just about below 500 points for what I'd say is a good starter. Basic five man kab squads are only 30 points so going for WarriorFish's bodies > Toys idea might be a good shout

Edit: If at some point ya get tired of bodies and raiders then a razerwing is never a bad shout

Double Edit: Now I'm not sure whether including the reavers would disallow you to take an obsession on that detachment, so maybe don't take them and just put another unit of kabalites?

Yeah it would, taking the Reavers would prevent the Kabal units from gaining an obsession rule, so it's probably better to leave them out until more Wych Cult units are available.

Maybe consider Scourges; the models are sweet, they have access to some decent anti-tank weapons while still having nice maneuverability and you can include them in any of the detachment types without preventing the other units from benefiting from an obsession rule.

Aye so scratch the reavers (which would free points up for 3 more blasters and some melee upgrades) or take them in a separate auxiliary detachment (giving you an obsession on everything but costing a CP)

+1 vote for scourges though, lovely kit, relatively cheap, good options

Why is mobile a requirement?

I like haywire blasters for the up close work, and dark lances for distance. Blasters can also work, but they are quite expensive and a high priority target.  I just find the 36" lances much easier to protect than 18" blasters, even if I have to suffer a -1 to hit on the turn I arrive and pay a few points more per model.

Would overall echo most others, get a solid foundation of Kabalites and a raider or 2 it will serve you well going forward.  I would try to get a ravager and scourges ASAP too, barring the ravager a razorwing can give you a pretty big advantage especially at some of the earlier stages in an escalation, while being good later.

Got a set of scourges yesterday was leaning towards dark lances. I guess my thoughts on mobility was more of a not a huge loss if they have to get out of dodge quickly, I didn't want to put blasters on them because 18" puts them fairly close and I'm putting blasters on my warrior squads.

What would be the recommended loadout on scourges for mobile AT

Conventional wisdom suggests Blasters and Dark Lances, which in terms of stats are identical, but the Blaster is an 18" range Assault Weapon, while the Dark Lance is 36" Heavy. So while the Blasters are better for mobility, you also potentially need to put your unit in harm's way to get in range of your target which is a problem Dark Lances don't have. I've personally just kitted out my second Scourge squad with Dark Lances for this reason; easier to keep safe while they are at long range, and if they do need to re-deploy, -1 to hit for one turn isn't a disaster.

Haywire Blasters are interesting for sure, they are half the price of a Blaster and their ability to put mortal wounds on vehicles even if they fail to wound them by conventional means is pretty great. That said, they suffer a lot from lack of versatility; against anything that isn't a vehicle, they are essentially an Intercessor Bolt Rifle.

If you end up facing an army with no vehicles, Blasters and Dark Lances are still highly effective against multi-wound models like Thunderwolf Cavalry, Crisis Suits, Primaris Marines, Tyranid Warriors, and also monsters like Daemon Princes and Carnifexes. So I suggest at this stage, where ability to deal with multiple different threats is so important because you have only a few units yourself, I'd say go with either Blasters or Lances.

Just ordered the old start collecting set so I am up to an archon 20 warriors 5 scourges raider and a venom for a starting kabal list would like to score another raider but unless I can find one in a store I'm probably waiting a while as it shows sold out online

All of this, definitely good advice.  I'll add that Heat Lances are pretty useless and to stay away if you intend for your Scourges to have any AT impact.
