MWBD + Quell the Rebellion / Mechanical Augmentation

9x19 Parabellum

Recommended Posts

Just want to make sure I have this right...

Quell the Rebellion (Nemesor Zandrekh buff) and Mechanical Augmentation (Illuminor Szeras buff), both increase the ballistic skill of the model to 2+ (or, cumulatively, to 1+, but 1's always miss)

My Will be Done adds 1 to the hit roll, thus meaning a "1" becomes a "2" (which hits, when taken in conjunction with either of the above buffs).

Thus, MWBD + (either buff) means all shot hits (even without rolling), right?  (barring any penalties to shooting like Raven Guard chapter tactic, etc.)

As you said in your post, 1's always miss. This is stated on pg.181 of the BRB under "Hit Roll".

The only way hits are made automatically is if it's specifically stated, like in the case of the heat ray's dispersed setting.

No. Ones always fail. That overrides all, even if you can stack enough buffs to get a 1+ or better, ones always fail. It's the same with armor, even if you mange to get a 1+ save or better, ones always fail.

OK thanks. I still get confused as to what comes first.

With Tesla, I was recently made aware that a "5" becomes a "6" and thus triggers Tesla hits afterwards. In that case, it would seem that the later number is what's important, not the original roll.  Which is a slightly different order than applying it to 1's.

Thanks, although there is a difference between "1's always fail, even if the test only requires a 1"  vs.  "1's always fail, but what about when a 1 BECOMES a 2?"

Way back when 8th came out, there was a designer commentary somewhere talking about the Order of Operations with this stuff. Part of the reason why you always apply re-rolls FIRST, then apply +/- modifiers.

So if you roll a 1 To Hit, you can re-roll it (if that buff is available), but then if you roll another 1 you specifically cannot modify it in anyway.

As for Tesla, it says 6+ which is great, since MWBD makes 5's into 6's and 6's into 7's, so it counts!

Compare to the Voltaic Staff or such where it specifically says "unmodified rolls of 6".

"A roll of 1 always fails, irrespective of any modifiers that may apply" is pretty clear. For further clarification on the tesla rule, check this out. From the designer's commentary:

Q: If a rule states that an ability triggers on, for example, ‘hit rolls of 6+’, does this refer to the result of the dice rolls before or after modifiers are applied?

A: It refers to the final result, after re-rolls and modifiers (if any) have been applied.

Quell the Rebellion and MWBD still stack nicely though. I used Zandrekh and Obyron in a friendly game Sunday, Zandrekh marched up the board with 10 immortals. The two together let them Advance and still hit on a 2+. They ended up being more of a threat than I expected, and when my opponent tried to remove them Obyron jumped in with a second squad and caused even more trouble. If only Sautekh dynasty code was a little more useful...
