What new things would you like to see for Primaris

Recommended Posts

I think when Guilliman woke up and saw the Imperium, he though some changes were needed.

Reading this forum and pieces of fluff on the Internet, I think Guilliman wants to rebuild the Legions or at least he wants to modify the Chapters and do them more like Legions. My points:

  • Primaris are equipped in a similar way to old legionnaries during the Great Crusade: "Tactical legionnarie" with "Bolter" and no specialists in the squad, and creating specialist units like Hellblasters.
  • He is increasing the size of the Ultramarines beyond orginal Codex Astartes, now he is working on the 2th Ed:whistling: :
    • Creating the 11th Company (full Primaris, I think it is in Dark Imperium or another book)
    • Increasing the size of the companies (CSM pag26-27 2nd Company 102+2Dreadnoughts) (no data about Reserve Companies' numbers)
      • TACTICAL FLEXIBILITY
The newly rewritten Codex Astartes allows for each Battle Company to be reinforced with additional troops reassigned from the Reserve Companies. These seconded battle-brothers typically form squads XI upwards. Once attached to a Battle Company, it is standard practice for the newly joined reserve squads to take new markings corresponding to their new company, although the rapid nature of war does not always afford time for such a formality.
    • Deploying other UM's successor chapters in Ultramar under Calgar's command
  • Also increasing the power of other commanders (not only Calgar) Dante received many men and I think he received also the command position in his side of the Cicatrix Maledictum.
  • Belisarius Cawl came back to his forge for continue developing more toys for the Lord Commander.

So I think we could watch the 30k/HH range and maybe imagine the new primaris units.

I was thinking about this a bit more, and here's some thoughts. First, general Primaris stuff.

  • Primaris, so far, have been generalist specialists. Aggressors shoot infantry but punch tanks, inceptors are shooty but get a bonus on the charge, intercessors and hellblasters are mid-long range specialists but they can hold their own surprisingly well in a melee, that sort of thing. The specialize, but not to the same degree that the Eldar (for example) do. That's kind of cool and I'd like to keep that for anything going forward.
  • Primaris are all equipped the same. I don't play 30k but my impression is that this is a 30k thing. This is cool because it means that you don't get ablative wounds. Everyone is worth about the same, which feels nice in an elite force. You also lose effectiveness more quickly if stuff starts dying so it's worth a small discount. Stuff going forwards should keep this as well.
  • In general, we actually have most of the base units that we need. Terminator equivalents, standard guys, sneaky boys, fast dudes and big gun people are good bases to work with. I'd personally like to see an additional fast unit, probably jetbikes, but for the most part gaps can be filled with more weapon and equipment options for existing units.
  • Primaris Characters need a full set of options. Librarians, Chaplains, Lieutenants and Captains should all be able to choose from standard armor, gravis, inceptor or jetbike/whatever. There should also be more weapon/equipment options.
  • Primaris should have a full set of transport options. Drop pods, rhino equivalents, etc. No reason not to. I'm not sure that you need new combat vehicles such as predators.

More unit specific stuff.

  • I'd like to see Reivers and Inceptors get a full close combat setup. Not necessarily a super specialized one, but maybe something like S + 1, AP - 1, 1 extra attack. Some kind of heavy chainsword to match the Absolver Bolt Pistol (which I'd also give them).
  • Breaching Shields are cool, so I'd like to add them as an intercessor option. Maybe trade it off so the sergeant can't take a power sword and you can't get a grenade launcher if you take shields, but you get a 5++.
  • Aggressors should get an anti-elite option. Plasma or Melta or something.
  • Hellblasters need other ranged options. Not a ton, but I'd at least like to see a missile option or a heavy bolter-ish option.
  • Jetbikes come in that have an option of good vs hordes in melee and good vs big stuff at range or vise versa.

Primaris marines seem to have a lot of scope for further expansion. These are the new units I'd like to see:

Primaris Techmarines, armed with experimental weaponry that they're field testing for Cawl.

Primaris Neophytes. I know that you could technically use the existing scout models, but I think there's a golden opportunity to re-visit and re-imagine what trainee (Primaris) marines would look like. Bigger models to match the new scale, more functional and brutal looking carapace armour (that encloses the entire body rather than just the torso), helmet and bareheaded options, auto-shotguns as their standard weapon, sniper rifle and heavy stubber options.

Heavy assault squad: storm shields and heavy chainswords (-1 AP). Different armour aesthetic to existing Primaris, more akin to Mark 3 power armour.

A new fire support squad, armed with onslaught Gatling cannons.

I would prefer to be able to load my primaris in to land raiders, rhinos and drop pods... IMO Instead of slowly replacing every standard SM unit with a pirmaris equivalent, they should've just have rescaled the entire sm model range and spare us with the poorly constructet lore.  (Yes, I'm still salty)

I get where you are coming from. I’m building my own DIY Primaris (ergo not Uber competitive :)) army myself. You have to remember though ... this company makes its money from selling miniatures. The books and hobby materials are extremely secondary sources of income. They also need to be bringing in new players as much as catering to the veteran crowd (such as myself)

That’s one heck of a sword blade to be balancing there. Rescaling the Astartes line would have made a comparative blip on the screen in their most popular Factions sales. I think the concept of the Primaris ... bigger better Marines fighting in a style not seen since he days of the HH (I totally skipped 6th and 7th /0 no clue about that game) is innovative as hell. It’s not only bringing old players like me back because we love the models but transitioning HH players into 40k because it opens up a new gaming realm for them (which they will need to invest in but it has to be easier to find games for their models now).

I’d like to see a Belisarius-pattern Graviton weapon array (pistol, rifle, cannon) or better yet ... onslaught gatling cannon for heavy weapon teams. It’s not as versatile but five/ten S5 Dakka-Marines at that level would mean some serious decision making in the Heavy slots.

You could also put the twin grav-rifles (or the onslaught gatling cannon) on grav-jetbikes, or the HH style bikes for rule of cool.

I'd like a primaris equivalent of a flying razorback. My reasoning is it would give them better anti-armor capabilities and mobility filling in some of the major weaknesses of the primaris. Something like toughness 7, 3+ armor, 20-48" move, 6 primaris transport capacity, and the option for a twin lascannon, twin heavy bolter, or twin assault cannon.

Breachers and jetbikes would be ace, also melta & onslaught Hellblasters, anti-armour melee and cheap transports. Legion me, baby! Veteran upgrades for squads and character loadout choices would be ace too.

I'd rather they created units similar to what's in the Hours Heresy.

Jetbikes, dedicated tanks with superior weaponry, further unique HQ and character options, etc

I'd love a Primaris Veteran unit, however. Blinged up with lots of wargear options.

I would love to see a breacher style unit with bolt carbines, or maybe shotguns.  Also, maybe a devastator equivalent in gravis armor carrying onslaught gattling guns.  Some kind of close combat unit would be nice too.

Most of all, I would like to see more wargear options for characters and sergeants.  The wargear restrictions that they have just seem bizarre to me.

Less monoposes. I hate seeing identical posing in my two units of Aggressors.

one of my favorite primaris models is the rifleman advancing with his weapon raised, i love more dynamic poses the squat and slightly raised walking foot pose is so limited now.

Personally I find the Primaris poses incredibly lacking outside of one or two predetermined bodies in specific kits. And while the Proper Marine kits are a bit more limited in the legs, the ability to adjust the waist with the balljoint can lead to some far more realistic poses with a sense of weight and motion over the sadly static Primaris marines. And because Primaris Marine kits lack that, I end up seeing far too many duplicates.

And while I can convert and change and repose, that's still something that should've been in every Primaris kit as a baseline. I'm not playing Napoleonics after all :P

A unit with each model equipped with Onslaught Gatling Cannons would be extremely sexy. I approve.

Check out page 44 of the Deathwatch codex, there is a picture of two space marines on bikes.  The bikes look the same as the standard bike, but the marines riding the bikes are definetly primaris in mark 10 armour.

Its probably a mistake by the person doing the artwork not being a 40k fan familiar with the differences between marine types, but you never know
