Good to see some more work Rumi, nicely done with the colours though it has me thinking - isn't it time for an army shot? msn-wink.gifbiggrin.png

Yeah, I really should.  I was going to take an army picture when I finished basing them all, but I haven't been basing since I decided to go back and do armour highlights on all my models and then spray them with GW's varnish.  That said, I should start doing all of those things - or take a photo without having finished those things.

After coming this far, I think best to get things to the level you want then take the picture. Then they can be complete in your eyes, and look all the better for it :tu: We can wait ;)

Haven't posted here in a while, as I've been in a bit of a hobby funk and what painting I have done was for my friend's orks.

That said, thanks to the Spring Cleanup I've been able to get back into the groove.  I finished assembling a landraider proteus I had bought a couple of years ago when I made the hobby pilgrimage to GW Nottingham.  Despite the instruction sheet being quite poor, the kit itself was pretty straight forward and with some help from the 30K forum I was able to get all the pieces where they were supposed to be.  I was lucky in that I had a good cast - not much flash and little warping - which certainly helped.  I magnetized the cupola weapons so I can swap between them, or convert a twin heavy bolter for when I want to field it as a regular landraider.

dLEHHmp.jpg

This week, I've been working on some more of my Back to Badab killteam, and have finished the cultist champion.  I'm really happy with him.

xtW8Z6t.jpg

He stands out more than I intended from the other cultists, given his orange jump suit, but I found adding a bit more purple around his neck really helped him look like he belonged - here he is with the 3 others I've completed so far.

mVTcF9Y.jpg

I've also started what is the "outside crew", all conversions of the genestealer cultist kit.  I'm really happy with how the armour has turned out (it will be dirtied up after I finish the rest of the mini), but I'm not sure what colour(s) to do the arms and legs.  Currently they are a light grey, but I think I want more contrast but not sure what colour to use.  Any suggesitons?

Looks good, KT is a great excuse to get creative :tu: I'm not sure on the secondary colour, a darker grey or perhaps a black would contrast strongly but maybe too obvious?

I agree with WarriorFish, stick with a neutral tone on the arms (black, bone, grey, taupe, etc). That way the viewer's eyes will be drawn to the model's bright shoulder pads with excellent striping and head.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were very helpful.

I ended up going with a very dirty tan (ushabi bone with a very heavy chestnut craft paint wash) as it a) was fairly neutral and B) captured the generic "working" suit aesthetic I was going for.  Doesn't contrast as nicely with the flesh, but has the benefit of fitting in better with my other cultists, who have a lot of brown and tans on them.  I then changed his gun to green, as I wanted it to look like looted military hardware rather than something that matched their own gear.

Anyway, here are some pictures - tried a new background colour (rather than white) and am happy with the change - the ones on white all looked under lit or blown out.

XfJu3R5.jpg

Here's a picture of the back, which gives a better view of what the tan looks like as well as the spot of purple I have on the crotch cloth.

OiXM7IW.jpg

Another good thing about the tan, is it lets me hide the more genestealery bits and camoflages them as just part of the suit - note the left arm.

Nice work, I think doing Cultists in smaller batches is a good idea as they can be a bit time consuming especially if you're subbing in models with more detail. This is probably what I'll do when I get round to my second box :P It's a shame they leave the table after a stiff breeze but there's appearances to consider especially as a Slaanesh force

Once the Culists are done is the Land Raider next?

Yeah, I like to paint whatever I'm doing in small batches, as I don't really have more than one paint quality, as I tend to want to do all the details I can on whatever I paint.  Unfortunately, that also means that I can't really paint any better than my standard model either.

And yeah, its too bad they don't really stick around on the table top... but I guess I'm used to that, because before starting this army I played infantry heavy guard, for which I have almost 400 infantry models painted.  That said, against my friend's necrons, everything seems to die right away.

I'll be doing the landraider for ETL, so it is coming just not right away. smile.png  Whether I will be completed the cultists by then, I don't know - I was actually painting the cultists as part of of the unofficial Badab killteam event (http://www.bolterand...l-team-edition/).  I'm painting a 100 point Heretic Astartes killteam for that, for which I just finished the cultist component of that.  Here's a picture of those.

HnhhVY4.jpg

In terms of my EC army, there are actually cultists for 3 different squads in there - 2 for a close combat squad, 3 for a shooty squad of Dark Vengence cultists, and 4 for a shooty squad of vac suited cultists.

So next on the painting desk are the 4 chaos marines that will form the balance of my killteam (and all the specialists).  They've been built using both chaos and marine parts, and I'll be doing them as astral claws but with the chaos bits in Red Corsair colours - I want them to look like they are part way through the transition from chapter to warband.  We'll see if it works.  Those unpainted minis can be seen here: http://www.bolterand...tion/?p=5469821

I hadn't planned to - I haven't really followed what his rules might be, and while the model is nice I still have issues with it (in particular its tiny waist) and he doesn't really match my army aesthetic wise, given that there is little of his armour showing and its mostly just his skin suit.

That said, I may change my mind when I see his rules and what 9th ed. brings - if he fills a hole that I think needs filling for a reasonable cost, I may pick him up.

I'm almost done my unit of cultists converted from the genestealer cultist kit - they'll be up here this week - and after that I think I will finish up some terrain that I was working on last fall.  After that, not sure what I will do - I really like how the 4 astral claws I did for my back to Badab killteam (http://www.bolterand...ates/?p=5533661) came out and am thinking of doing some more so that I can field a detachment of them as red corsairs for some more CPs, so that's likely the next chaos stuff I paint.

Double post time - I've finished the last 6 cultists and have photos.

Here are the 6 new cultists:

Here are closeups of 3 of my favorites:

And here is all 10 of the squad together:

I'm really happy how they've come out and despite being genestealer cultist models with only the odd head swap and chaos stars, and even with using purple as a highlight colour (which is a common genestealer cultist colour), they don't jump out as genestealer cultists.

Cultist look good! They jump out to me as chaos cultist more so then genestealer ones, mind you I rarely play GSC in my area though.

Bile's waist is tiny which armor wise doesn't make sense, and some people complain about the nose too. I personally hate painting faces. Mostly because it's hard for me to make them look good. That's why I always use helmeted heads on my marines and even on my daemon princes. That and it also makes them look more like knights in space haha.

You've done a very good job on the heads. The eyes look good. Even the teeth stand out.

Thanks!  I had to be extra careful.  The teeth in particular took more one try - on most of them, after my first attempt it looked more like they had rabies than teeth. :)

As for helmeted heads, I generally prefer bare heads for my squad leaders and characters, if I'm given the choice.  I know it doesn't make much sense from a realism standpoint, but to me it gives them more personality (so that the characters feel more like characters) than the more impersonal helmets.   That said, in this particular army, most of the character models I have don't have bare heads and I haven't bothered to do head swaps - or the ones that do have bare heads I botched their paint jobs so I don't usually field them. :)

I've painted some cross-eyed, foaming mouthed marines with a dash of skin disease in my day haha. How long did it take you to get good at painting heads/faces?

That was a challenge for me making my squad leaders stand out. In alot of kits or artwork they show them with the bare head, and like you said it adds character to them or at least makes them stand out. And realism shmealism. This is 40k, a setting with planet destroying lasers and bombardments but some people run around with sword shaped chainsaws haha. Rule of cool allll the way!

I still wouldn't say I'm good at it - just that I can get it looking good enough with fewer tries.  Basically, its down to giving the head a wash/ink in the appropriate brown colour, then being very careful doing the eyes (I find it helps to lay the model down on the table top and paint the eyes and teeth there, as that way you only have to worry about your paint hand being shakey rather than both).

My first army back in 3rd ed was sisters of battle, 90% of whom have bare heads, so I got lots of practice painting up my 50 or so SoB plus another 50 or so necromunda gangers.  My next army after that was guard, all of whom have their faces showing, which was another 250 or so models... so I guess I can say I have a lot of practice.  That said, my good heads from when I started are pretty much on par with my good heads now... I am just more consistent in that I have less bad heads.

My system doesn't work for all heads, though - I've painted the helmetless guy from Dark Vengeance twice, and neither time did it work out.  I wish I was able to successfully mix paints so as to get natural shading and such without relying on washes, which is pretty much what I think I need to get the dark vengeance bare head right.

Had vowed this in the backlog cleanup but hadn't finished it - basically, it was to build out the shoulder joints of my squid-naught (double scourge hellbrute) so they weren't the bare ball sockets from the original model (they are from the maulerfiend kit) - here's a "before" picture to show what I'm talking about:

l4Pw9oh.jpg

Anyway, the delay was because I couldn't find the guitar string I had bought long time ago (probably threw it out in my last move, which occurred when I hadn't done anything hobbywise in a few years, so I probably ditched them thinking that I wasn't likely to need them).  So, today I decided to crawl out of my post-pandemic hole and go to a music store and buy some more.  About an hour of clipping and greenstuffing later, I've finished building up the shoulders of my squid-naught.  Here are some pictures, rotating the model counter-clockwise beginning with the left front shoulder.

EM3xZwH.jpg

srATPew.jpg

nw98mtQ.jpg?1

fpkGKeU.jpg

It originally had a tongue, but it kept falling off into the model so I got rid of it.  Finally managed to fish out the ball of dried greenstuff that had been holding it in place (which failed to come out when I retrieved the tongue), so it no longer rattles, thankfully.  Any thoughts on how I could anchor the tongue in such a way as to prevent this problem (and without disassembling the model to do so)?
