Bishoujo Posted April 13, 2018 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Hey there noble Grey Knights. I'm trying to work some Grey Knights into a story / campaign setting and I'm stuck on a few points. My understanding is that the Grey Knights tend to either mind-wipe or kill their allies after a battle, depending on how useful the allies are (kill a Guardsman, mind-wipe an Astartes?). How strict are they about this? I've read a few examples of this not happening, but different sources have different weight in the lore so I'm not sure exactly how accurate they are. I guess a follow up is *why* do they do this? Is it purely from a secrecy standpoint? They don't want many people even knowing the Grey Knights exist? Or is it from a potential corruption standpoint? If the Grey Knights have shown up to battle, the daemon situation has definitely reached a critical point and, as a result, chances of corruption among the other Imperium forces in that battle are higher than what they would deem acceptable? I'd like to include a small number of Grey Knights into this thing, but I don't want to step on the lore too much - nor do I want the Guard and Sisters there to be killed/wiped after whatever battle. Somewhat related, do Grey Knights ever show up for non-combat situations? Like, let's say a Chaos war band attacks an outpost and is repelled. The Champion leading this group is slain and drops a daemon weapon. The Canoness leading the defending forces knows better than to handle that weapon herself. What happens here? Would she try to contact a member of the Ordo Malleus? Would they send a Grey Knight to dispose of this weapon safely? I have to imagine that a daemon possessed weapon couldn't be safely handled by someone lacking the strength and training of a Son of Titan. Thanks in advance for any feedback! EDIT: Additional question/scenario: Grey Knights are on a planet to safely deal with some sort of daemonic artifact or something. Random Xenos (let's say Orks) show up and start causing problems. Would the Grey Knights call on the local PDF / other Imperial forces in the area to assist? Kind of a "you guys deal with this - what we're doing is important and should not be disturbed" type thing? And only if they don't get into too much trouble by doing so (which extremely rarely happens). Tho they won't mind-wipe Astartes for just that. There would have to happen something extremely serious for them to lay a hand on other Astartes. However to be fair that part of the Grey Knights lore was always kinda hard to explain and justify. Apart from everyone who told stories of their heroic victories over the arch enemy or reforged daemon weapons into chapter relics. It was inconsistent and unbelievable. I'm glad its gone. jeffersonian000 Posted April 13, 2018 Share Posted April 13, 2018 It was never the Grey Knights that pushed the mindwipe/elimination agenda, it was the Inquisition. GK were always extremely careful to not reveal themselves as much as practical, while the accompanying Inquisitors would make the determination on what was necessary for cleanup. “The Emperor’s Gift” is an excellent source for the role GK play in such cleanups. Also, GK seem to have been one of the least well kept secrets of the Imperium, seeing as everyone seemed to know they existed anyway. SJ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
librisrouge Posted April 13, 2018 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Grey Knights are probably down with the whole mind wiping thing but the real impetuous behind that is the Inquisition as a whole. An entire society informed of chaos' existence is an uncountable amount of people that'll need watching in case they decide that chaos might make a fun source of power, that it can't be as bad as the Imperium says it is, or that it must not be as corrupting as they've been told. The Inquisition has a fit about a future where this is because that means that the Inquisition has to,...wait for it...expand even further. Good luck with that. Grey Knights appreciate this problem but, at the same time, have a heroic streak that forces them to look at survivors of a daemonic incursion and think to themselves, "If they were going to side with chaos, wouldn't the have done it during the war when it might have saved their lives? Doesn't it make sense for them to side with chaos, given that it kept offering things to them, instead of keeping the faith and fighting tooth and nail to oppose it? Yeah, these guys are probably fine." Hero thoughts. The kind of things the Inquisition doesn't waste time with. The Inquisition is more concerned with the worst case scenario. The "What Might End Everything!" thought that isn't hard to find whenever chaos interferes. This means they love the idea of just wiping groups of possibly tainted folks out. It's simple. Easy even, as long as some dumb first founding busy bodies don't get in the way. However, as many have pointed out, there is no effective way to do this in the 40k setting. Whole worlds can't be reliably depopulated all the time. Regiments that survive daemonic incursions are automatically hardened veterans and a valuable resource. This is why the mind wipe fluff has never been really consistent. I chalk it up to the in-universe narrator problem that 40k is plagued/blessed with. One inquisitor actually tries to do this and they wrote the previous fluff. Another appreciates their new, hardened against chaos, personal army (whose official records have disappeared, of course.) One inquisitor sees a population as irredeemable and orders the Marine Malevolent to finish the purge (and they would, admit it.) Another secretly works with the Adeptus Ministorum to send more missionaries and preachers to keep an eye on things and bolster the planet's faith for a while (with a few agents sent in secretly to report to him directly.)
