WAR009's Xenos hunting task force

WAR

Recommended Posts

So a while back I bought all the Deathwatch stuff during their initial release, that I could. Since them they sat around in their boxes just waiting to get built. My local group has gone xeno crazy of late and I thought why not bust them out and get started build. Hopefully I''ll continue the motivation through the upcoming ETL so i figure i get a jump start on my army for our local Escalation league. With the Big FAQ dropping today I may have to re-evaluate the Inquisitor leading the army, but for now he is staying.

Original plan was for :

  • HQ- Inquisitor Lok (waiting on him to arrive from FW)
  • Elite- 4 Acolytes with bolt pistols and Stormbolters
  • Elite- count as "Jokaero" Gun Droid
  • Kill Team "Saber" - 4 veterans & Sgt, 5 SIA Bolters, 4 CCW, Storm Shield
  • Kill Team "Rapier"- 4 Veterans & Sgt, 4 SIA Bolters, 2 CCW, Sgt Power Sword, Storm Shield, Frag Cannon
  • Razorback "Long Sword"- Twin Linked Lascannon and Stormbolter

I started cleaning the first veteran squad, built the Razorback with variant parts (twin linked heavy bolters, and rhino doors), and started working on the count as "Jokaero"

Icons are OOP Pop Goes the Monkey DW Icons. :(

Servitor is from the Storm Raven kit. Peg removed and replaced with the rear of a HK missile tube. Sensor (also from HK Missile tube) is mounted to the HK missile tube front piece which will be mounted to the tracked base (epic Land raider), I still need to make his actuators like shown on the Servitor from the Exorcist kit

the Jokaero's weapon will be an Aliens Smart gun from Shapeways modified to fit on his one arm. I have various Ad Mech bits coming in to make his claw hand and tech it out the rest of the conversion

Comments appreciated.

I love the creative use of bits! Those epic landraiders are a real blast from the past... ;)

Aside: How's the quality / detail / value of those pop goes the monkey parts? I've always wondered whether the plastic works with the same glue as gw plastic.

Thanks mjrwaud! I saw the idea on line and was like hmmmmm. Only thing I wish I would have done is bought the plastic versions of the land raiders.

I been using his stuff for a while now and really like it. Sucks that he got hit with the GW IP hammer but it is understandable.

Pop Goes the Monkey- Detail is nice and crisp, quality is better when compared to some other vendors from shapeways which will have a grainy texture to it and will require sanding and smoothing, value is not bad....10 various shoulder pads is $14.99 (plus $4.99 shipping) so @ $1.50 each is not so bad but he has some chapters that are not made so it nice. As an example $1.50 for an Imperial/ Crimson Fist shoulder pad is overpriced (imho) but  the Hammers of Dorn  (successor to the Imperial Fists Chapter) is a steal for $1.50.

I strictly use super glue and have had no issues with it.  I was able to pop off Imperial Fists roundels from my Primaris marines since they were transferred to my Raptors instead.

See, I don't get why people say 'not bad'. 20 pads with worse detail than plastic is 30$. DW Kill Team box with 18 is 35$, effectively netting you KT for 5$. Yes, I do see appeal of obscure chapters but for the price pop charges I'd rather take IF pad from KT box and add greenstuff hammer to it. But it's probably just me.

Not everyone is willing or competent at sculpting green stuff into complex shapes (including yours truly), so for those of us with "all thumbs" PGtM is the perfect solution.  It's not incredibly cost effective, I'll admit, but the detail is excellent and I've never been disappointed since I started purchasing from Shapeways.  In particular, their shaped shoulderpad icons are magnificent for avoiding the pitfalls of waterslide transfers and offer more value for the price.

In other news, great to see the new Watch Company starting up and it looks like you're putting your own flair into this :)  I wouldn't be too concerned about the big FAQ, as many players have realized that a simple Auxiliary Detachment is still a viable choice if you don't mind the CP tax (especially true with Battalions handing out +5 now).

MY GS skills are lacking otherwise I would have gone that route. Plus I used to pay $$$ for the old blister pack pewter IF/ CF shoulder pads to create stock pile of them.

Originally the FAQ was a big ole kick in the nuts from GW but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.  Like you said it will not be bad if I can cram a battalion worth of DW and take the -1 hit for the Inquisition.

so with all the PrimaWatch info dropping I think I am not going to make my Primaris sections from other chapters, but leave them as the unnumbered sons serving an Inquisitorial task force with all my Veterans from other chapters. So far I only have Hellblasters for the DW but they are way down the build line.

With my ETL Vow in (but still requiring pics, taking them today), I have dropped the Inquisitorial section for a Xenophase Blade wielding watch captain and a Twin Heavy bolter Tarantula and the 2 vet squads and razorback are staying for just under 500 points.

Eliminated my plan to use a vindicare, but that was about it. Other than a transport for my inquisition vanguard detachment. Think that's the only problem I had. But I was using AM as an ally so I was still pretty straight. It was for fluff purposes rather than competitive, but I'm working around it. So it would have just been another deathwatch detachment. Or custodes

ETL Vow Update

Finally submitted pics and had time to work on some stuff but not much done....

The before pics:

The started tarantula is not a part of the vow but since I did start it I'm including pics of it as proof the unbuilt on is the one I am working on to keep to it honest.

Razorback and the Watch Captain (all bases from Elriks Hobbies, Corrupted Outpost line)

Where I stand as we near the end of week 1.

gallery_26778_14419_374061.jpg

Still to do:

  1. Build 2 more vets (one of which will be the sgt)
  2. Drill mounting points in the bases for kill team #1
  3. Put Tarantula in the ultrasonic cleaner full of soap and water to remove release agent
  4. Build Kill Team #2
  5. base coat everything
  6. paint everything

Side note picked up another DW Land Raider, Corvus, Start Collecting box, and Inquisitor Greyfax to convert into a Interrogator for my Inquistion task force , tons of AdMech, Scion and Guard bits for my Jokaeros, parts to make my Alcolytes and Objective counters, parts to start my eventual Magos Biologis AdMech contingent.
