KDC's Space Wolves - Grand Annulus Finished!

Yesterday I managed to do my first bit of everyone’s favourite hobby. It’s the first thing I’ve managed in months. Second child has really stopped me being able to play, model or paint. Turns out you can post on blogs and forums just fine while holding a baby however. Or play Bloodbowl or Space Hulk on an iPad...

So I decided to give FearPeteySodes snow recipe a whirl...

43cc47e1-9303-45f4-864d-668bd34aff48.jpe

Just as i’d suspected it’s amazing advice for doing snow.

This is (obviously) a Wolf Scout. These guys were what got me back into Space Wolves. In the 5th edition rulebook there were kill team rules so I started a Space Wolves kill team. The rest is history.

On the subject of Wolf Scouts. How about 2 attacks each to represent the fact they are veterans.

As I was only making the one unit. I made them Erik Morkai’s Scouts. Scouts being the speciality of that Great Company. Here’s a shot of them with Erik...

277ee873-2130-4ce3-bb1a-b7d4adb5a57a.jpe

He needs the snow treatment now too.

Here’s a few planned additions to the unit that I never got around to finishing...

872abf61-2bf8-40ca-98de-e50399986d0a.jpe

I image I was wanting to go tank hunting. Combi melta, melta bomb Wolf Guard. Meltagunner. It must have been back when you could take Wulfen Scouts. Genstealer hands and ungor head. Jobs a good un.

I’ll be posting anymore progress or just the rest of my Space Wolves here.

P.s. if your looking for ‘Making all twelve Wolf Lords’ it’s now in WIP section of thr forge.

@ FearPeteySodes

Thanks again for the snow recipe, really like it. Congratulations and good luck with the baby. It’s all about whether they sleep or not.

I found another scout. He must have been in stealth mode when I did all the snow.

I based him on this pic from the 5th edition codex.

Like any good 5th edition Space Wolf army I’ve got a squad of missile launcher toting Long Fangs...

The Cyclone guy is made from a terminator from the Space Hulk set. That was the best terminator I could think of to be wearing the cyclone...

There is a true Veteran in this unit. The only survivor from my 2nd edition Space Wolf army (if you don’t include Ragnar’s shoulder pad). I love the legs on the old school devastators and never understood why they changed them.

Here is some more of my Space Wolves.

My old dread. A vanilla one Wolfed up. The bear pelt from the terminator box fits very well on here which was a nice surprise.

Blood Claws...

Here’s a shot with all of them in. I’m losing a bit of light to take this. Need to improve my photo skills.

Half painted Wolf Guard with combi plasmas, some stock with wolf bits some pieces together. I think because they are half painted I’m struggling with the light on this pic.

For anyone considering making an Iron Priest on thunderwolf...

He went together relatively painlessly. Even managed to keep his original legs with the detailing in. Also means I have a whole rider to switch him with if I want another thunderwolf for a game or make a Wolf Guard BL.

Cheers Bjorn.

I’ve not cracked taking group shots. This is made worse by the pics turning up way more blurry than they actually are. Not sure why that’s happening.

Here is the Wolf Guard in (hopefully) bettter pics. So you guys can see the combi plasmas.

Can anyone guess I’m jealous of Sternguard. I love the look and special ammo. So I’ve made my best version, Wolf Guard with combi plasmas to have in my army. If I could choose anything from codex space marines it would be the Sternguard. My army is pretty old so not got on the Primaris bandwagon.

I love your poses and bold colors a lot! That dread is a beast too, you do an awesome job creatively using bits in interesting ways where that it’s only when you really get in there you realize that they’re not normally there!

I haven’t fully embraced the primaris either, but mostly based on the kit. I find them hard to make dynamic and interesting even going “full chop” mode lol.

@ Fear

Cheers bud. The posing is something I’m attempting to do every time I put a model together. If I can squeeze a bit more of a dynamic pose out with a slight angle change I will. I love a good dynamic pose. The colours are me trying to put a bit of interest and difference on the various guys. Fist, knee pad, shoulder pad a different colour, mix it up a bit.

Thats interesting about the Primaris. I think the thing that may convince me to at least make one is if they are embraced by the Space Wolves and I feel I need to make a Primaris Wolf Lord.

@ Konnavaer

Thanks. I’m repeating the pack markings elsewhere on the models. If it looks tribal that’s a bonus, they were all tribesmen once.

What I would like to be able to do with the army eventually is be able to take any of the great companies in any given game. Basically using list making and taking the appropriate Wolf Lord to take that Great Company to the table top. Most of my guys are Blackmanes but I think a few key units would help sell the different companies. Like the Sons of Morkai Scouts. I’m thinking now Seawolves Stormwolf, Combiflamer weilding Grimblood Terminators, Firehowler Skyclaws. I haven’t played for a while but when I was I was basically taking two Wolf Lords at a time to try to get them all to see the Table top. More for my own amusement I could get some fun combos going on. Gunnar Redmoon with a load of Long Fangs castling with a Blackmane drop assault for example. It’s not competitive but it is fun trying to capture the essence of a great company on the table top.

Cheers guys.

6 shots has done wonders for the asssult cannon. 4 shots wouldn’t be outrageous for the heavy bolter imo. Especially as stormbolter is 4 shots now.

I mix the squads so they get use (if I ever get a game in). Just a shame I painted them as a ‘squad’.

As a continuation of my seemingly random posting in my own Space Woles thread, here are some homages. Or simply taking pose inspiration from artwork. I had a bit of a 'thing' for the 5th edition codex so made a bunch of guys based on the pics in that. This is pic heavy just to warn you.

@ mercbat

Cheers bud. I’ve seen some good homages to that piece and kind of feel like the Krom design (although heavily influenced by classic Ragnar) is based on that pic too...

@ Bjorn Firewalker

I am partial to a homage. Check out the homages thread in hall of honour for loads of awesome homages by great people.

@ fear

Thanks mate. Generally speaking I feel the artwork recently has become more functional and less inspirational. They are more like pictures of the models rather than pictures of the characters. There are plenty of exceptions. I don’t remember seeing a piece I felt I wanted to go for in Cotw. I loved it, loved the great companies rules, missions (my friend is thousand sons) the fact the missions used specific companies and Wolf Lords. Having said that I did make two Wolf Lords from that book.

Hi Ehfull, nice 2nd edition codex pic as your avatar.

It’s the GW recipe but don’t do the layer step. I hate layering I’m too lazy or get too bored.

So I think it’s this:

Basecoat: The Fang

Shade: Agrax Earthshade

Highlight: Russ Grey

Highlight: Fenrisian Grey

I’m using some of the older paints with the old names but that’s the modern names for you. Gives a darker look with a frosty edge to it. Was a complete accident that I stuck with as I liked it.

Yes you got it in one. It’s the Blood Angels chaplain with jump pack.

Possibly it’s a bit too jazzy. My reasoning is he is leading an army (The Firehowlers) of jump pack guys so it helps make him stand out. I still regularly consider swapping a more functional jump pack in. It’s fun for the flames too though.

Thx, I need to have a better skill paint of the head to make a good avatar with my minies, haha.

Thanks a lot for your recipe ! I have try the gw ones but I prefere my wolf darker, I was thinking to go on a normal grey (like the post-heresy one for the wolves) such I am never satisfied with mine blue/grey try. I gona try yours so.

The codex coming out has fired me up to do my Space Wolves again. I’ve been on a little tour of my armies and right back around to the Space Wolves.

I’ve been painting Wolf Lord number 11 for me, Bran Redmaw.

He’s very much based on the unreleased Forgeworld model that was photographed at a gamesday.
