Who here runs allies? What flavour?

Recommended Posts

I fell the dark gods a few months ago and was on a major chaos kick.  The FAQ was Exterminatus for my chaos list so it is in the shop for repairs until further notice.  So now Im heading back the imperial with Raven Guard + Allies.  I picked imperial guard because... Tanks.  Since I dont much care for Cadians I ended up flipping a coin between Tallarn and Valhallans and ended up with Valhallans winning the toss.  Right now I have the following 90% painted Valhallan list...

Tanks

2 Leman Russ Demolisher kits, fully magnetized.

3 Chimeras, double flamers

10 veterans, melta x 3, vox. x 3

1 Command Squad with a banner, vox.

2 Commanders.

What type of Raven Guard list would compliment a Valhallan steel host of around 1000-1200 points?

What other allies do you guys use?

Valhalans = WW2 Soviets to me, which I have researched for various needs over the needs so I fully support your endeavor :tu:

Personally, I don't use allies unless it's a story campaign and even then I'm borrowing or tag-teaming. Having said that, I do have a TDA GK squad to be built because ... Nostalgia.

I use to run a full Cadian army in 4th/5th? I would like to build a 500 point detachment of desert guard to go with the Warhawks but have no clue in 8th the best way the should compliment each other in 8th. I loved the metal Kasrkin models but I guess they’re OOP these days.

Fluff wise I picture them as the PDF of the Warhawks homeworld specifically trained to support a Primaris Chapter. So either detachments of heavy weapon teams or tanks but that kind of project might make a good Vow for ETL next year. Because suddenly Knight Errant pops to mind .... stop it ahhhhhhhhhhh. “Inquisitor down, Inquisitor down. Call the Sisters.” ;)

Im running my carharadons with freeblades and a small detachment of AdMech to see how they play. The knight I havent decided on, I've come up with a back story for him, calling himself Dark Depths. His sinister stalking nature along with the love of close combat with his reaper chainsword, he feels at home with the sharks. And Im looking at adding 2 Armingers that follow Dark Depths

When I first started building my army my end game was to run knights/admech alongside it. RG have a forgeworld right next door so it would make sense to me that they run missions with the AdMech and knights at times when it's appropriate. There is a snippet of fluff on the wiki that the RG have ties to a titan legion. I've thought about exploring that more with some artistic liberty and writing up my own lore/backstory for them.

I could be wrong but I also believe the Black Knight fought alongside the RG against the Tau in the Damocles gulf campaign so there is precedence for including that model with the RG as well.

Now that the armigers are out, along with the new baby-titan (and my new airbrush) I think I may eventually run a knight army and drop a model in as an ally when the opportunity presents itself.

From a competitive standpoint:

2 Company Commanders (stock)

3 Infantry Squads

180 Points / +5 CP

From a fluff perspective:

As mentioned above, Knights, Titans, Admech, and IG all have precedent to be incorporated. Our boys in Black are the 2nd most humanitarian chapter out there, after our fellow green dragon bois.

The Imperial Army/IG/AM/PDF has a legacy as well that can be drawn on the fluff.

From my perspective I expect them to be Noble, Prudent, Practical. It's hard for an IG regiment to not take on some of the characteristics of the SM Fortress Monastery that resides on their home-world/in their sector.

Legio Vindictus btw.  This makes me want to get a thing :whistling:

Thanks for the link, Race. I read that a year or two ago but couldn't remember the name of the Legio. I love that idea, it'll happen some day, I'm sure... I guess more reason for me to pick up the Forgebane box... it'll give me my knight army and their support and my son's his Necrons... hrm...

There's actually a Legio Vindictus titan and an interview with it's Raven Guard owning player over on titan owners club.

At the moment allies wise, I have a small contingent of Imp Guard - Elysian Drop Troops, fit with our style and very fluffy as they worked together during the raid on Kasterol-novem.

I also have a single knight freeblade, the Obsidian Knight, as the RG brought him to the party during the latest fighting in the Damocles Gulf.

At some point in the future I may add an ad-mech force from Kiavahr.

So many plans so little time!

That was a great little read! I just recently learned about the Titan Owners Club. I have new goals :biggrin.:

I love the first part where he's talking about the house and backstory because that's exactly what I plan on doing with my knights. A whole new house with my family history will be injected into my army's lore... can't wait!

Now though... we need a cool color scheme for Kaivahrian AdMech units...

I would go with most of the color schemes are some form of black with red added in for admech.   I forget what major forge worlds are the closest to deliverance i do believe its graia or metalica it would probably be a variation on that scheme.  As for  a knight house i would look at house raven or tayern for color schemes.

Has anyone here considered a quad mortar battery?

Also, some TOs have been known to not allow FW (for various reasons). So, for those looking for all-comer list building, optimal choices do not involve FW.
