Need help choosing psychic powers

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

Very new to TS and decided to start a path to glory (converted to 8th edition rules) as a means to get the army and paint them up. My buddy is running Khorne. With 3 disciplines to choose from and the sheer number of psykers we have available I’m struggling to decide on powers.

My list so far is as follows.

HQ - Exalted sorc on disk (WT is +1 to casting)

TROOPS - 5 Rubrics, 10 Tzaangors

HEAVY SUPPORT - Predator (unsure to go quad las or dual las and Autocannon)

Next round I have 2 spawn coming in.

What powers would you suggest I run? I’m thinking deathhex and either glamour / Weaver on the exalted sorc and then prescience on the aspiring sorc

The asp sorc can only take from the discipline of change so he’s going to have to pick another power. I would probably suggest glamour as being the most ubiquitous of asp sorcerer powers.

Prescience is worth it’s weight in gold on the exalted, and warptime is normally a godsend as well.

Unless you have an issue with using named characters, Ahriman is worth the extra cost enough to pretty much be an auto-pick. He is easily one of the strongest casters in the game coming behind Magnus and not much else. Other casters have funny tricks like rerolls or improved deny’s but Ahriman has sheer weight of casting and denial with a native, non-degrading, bonus to each.

Alternative powers to consider are death hex for when you face hammernators, and diabolic strength for when you want to put the hurt on that tank you just charged.

Also keep in mind you get to pick your powers before the battle after seeing what your army you opponent brings, and that you can use a command point to swap a power if need be.

Congrats on joining the cabal!

Edit: Weaver is the most powerful defensive buff on the tzaangors against most things, so if you want to buff those, it’s good too.

Paladin is correct about Ahriman, he's awesome. But this is path to glory. Ahriman is not trying to become a daemon prince. He already exceeds them in numerous areas. Therefore, for the sake of the campaign, stick with an exalted sorcerer imho.

If you want to run the predator, quad las is going to be overkill in the first games. I'm guessing you're looking at around 500 pts for your armies? I don't see much point in bringing a predator in such a small game, unless it's the dakka variant. He's not going to be bringing a lot of big stuff, so it's not going to pull it's weight. I'd rather have more bodies (tzaangors and rubrics), for instance you're close to 10 rubrics with soulreaper for the points of a quad las pred. They take objectives better and have more utility.

Unless you know that he's bringing a land raider or equivalent, real antitank can be added later. That said, it's list tailoring, and not much fun imho :)

With the +1 to psychic tests warlord trait on an Exalted, Prescience and Glamour of Tzeentch are probably the best options.

I would also consider spending a CP to give an Aspiring Sorcerer "Gaze of Fate." It needs to be up every turn if possible and at WC 6 it is easy to cast for an aspiring.

Thanks for all the replies. I should of clarified further. With path to glory there are no names characters, otherwise I would 100% be taking Ahriman (mans a badass!). Also you don’t use points or power. Once you have your leader you roll on 1 of 3 tables either hero, retinue, or vehicle so the units that you add are random (I was hoping for a decider or Helbrute when I rolled on the vehicle table).

Also the psychic powers I pick will be set for the whole campaign.

Ok so glamour on the asp sorc got it. I was thinking deathhex as his leader will have a 4+ invuln and he also has 5 terminators. Prescience would be awesome for the Pred and he rubrics. While warp time would be good for when I get more Tzaangors. Alternatively temporal manipulation could be good to heal the predator.... some many good powers with not enough psykers at this time lol

Good detail to know that whatever you take you will be locked into for the duration so definitely go for the best Take All Comers spells that have been named and remember to proactively utilize other aspects such cabilistic focus if your Aspiring Sorcerer has to get off a Warp Charge 8 or the familiar strat so he can switch out his spell for something entirely different and game changing.

I cannot help but throw in a wild card though, something feast or famine like Tzeenth Firestorm or maybe Archaeinox's Infernal Gateway (thinking 1st ed DnD PHB spell lists haha).

While not as reliable as static buffs and debuffs they can fun!!

Unfortunately death hex won’t help you against his terminators as you need to get to -4 ap before you get to where his invulnerable save starts taking effect and you don’t have any of those. Could be somewhat useful against the lord, but at WC 8 it’s just to niche to take it out of the gate. If you find you need it, spend the CP and use it then.
