The Make or Break Point for Typhus

Hey guys, I’m signed up for an ITC event, but it’s only 1750.

Before I discount my Deathguard as an army I made a few lists with Mort and our nerfed Poxwalkers. Balance is hard with Mort at this point level. Anyway Typhus has always been a staple in my lists..always. But now 8m looking at him at this point level with about 15 Poxwalkers and I’m wondering if he’s worth it. What do you think?

Depends what you want the poxwalkers for, Ive started using them as moral immune objective holders which I serving me well for 6pts each. I argued that cultist don’t do much damage anyway so the moral immunity is worth the extra 2pts.

In this context I don’t see the point of typhus, and is rather save points to run a cheap lord who also gives out rerolls.

He's still a potent Psyker and combatant in CC. While his main purpose for most has been buffing Poxwalkers, he'll still cast buffs on other units and if he gets into combat he'll definitely hold his own.

Yeah he might not be worth that much as Poxwalker buffer but luckily he does other stuff as well.

So the question is ... how much points would you save by taking something with similar psychic and combat abilities and are those saved points worth it to buff 15 Poxwalker.

He's the all in one package, really.

Do you need:

  • Choppy
  • Mind Bullets
  • Buff Aura
  • Toughness
  • Some unique rules (Destroyer Hive etc)

Then he's all of that in one.

IMO his main competition is something like a DP, which exchanges Pox Buffs for Speed.

For his cost he absolutely makes the Lord of Contagion look stupid.

Not very difficult considering the lame aura, complete lack of ranged stuff, and being a DG in Cataphractii armour lol

Unless your opponent engages you in melee the Lord of Contagion is often as useful as a brick. :D

I'm a fan of the Malignant Plaguecaster, with Pestilential Fallout he has the potential to dish out 2 extra MW per turn. With his staff he has 3 S6/-1 AP/D3 attacks (and it's a plague weapon). He also gets 2 spells vs a DP with 1, all for 110 points.

You can also get another Chaos Lord with him for almost the same cost as a DP. I'm not trying to say take Plaguecaster over a DP, but he is a solid choice for the price especially if you are looking to save points by dropping Typhus.

I agree with a lot of what's being said. I mean the guy has been in nearly every list I've played in 8th.

And yes, he's a toolbox kind of dude. For sure.... BUT I don't know about you guys but when I'm using him as a Poxwalker Buffer, he's very, very rarely in CC. He moves so slow, and I typically stretch out Poxwalkers to leverage his buffs (and psychic buffs) and eventually the Poxwalkers take off on him, consolidating into as much as they can. Usually this is about turn 3-4 and Typhus plays catch up for those turns, and -maybe- out of 3 games does he reach something that makes any aspect of his personal abilities worth while.

All of what I just said about Poxwalkers was pre Pox-nerf. So now that changes things.

I personally can't compare Typhus to the Malignant Plaguecaster because the Plaguecaster makes every list. He's my cheap HQ in all my Battalions. So my choice is a DP which brings more than some people think.... it's not just speed, it's also the larger base + reroll 1 aura, plus Archcontaminator Aura combined with that. So typically mine advances with PBC's or something similar, and even Blightlaunchers on PM's are getting re-roll 1's and re-roll all to wounds. That's pretty significant.

Do you guys change your answer if I tell you I would be trying to fit Mortarion into a 1750 point list?

I love Typhus and always try to find a place for him... but I find his lack of speed a real issue, some might say just DS him but that has issues now and if your army pushes up to mid-table he sometimes can't DS in close enough, especially if you're in close combat.

Interesting. I have no idea about Necrosis. I admit I’m fairly ignorant about some of the more exotic Daemons.

Necrosius is a FW Heretic Astartes character if you were thinking he was a Daemon. I haven't used my DG yet, but on paper he is definitely better than a Plaguecaster and only about 10 pts more expensive.

Wow He’s a plague surgeon for poxwalkers? How big is that aura? For 10 pts and an extra power that is really a bargain. Is there no advantage to a Plaguecaster aside from the point decrease?

He also has a sigil or corruption so actually gets an inv save as well compared to a plaguecaster plus he gets a cool ap-1 D2 bolt pistol

It's a tainted force blade so you could have it as a sword, axe or even a scythe if you wanted

I normally prefer a plaguecaster mainly since he can still access the relics plus I really love his aura as it has really helped me a lot especially with the helm to boast his range though I am planning on converting up my own Necrosius with the plague marine box
