@Majkhel

When you add brown to your gold are you adding it directly to the mix or basing gold areas in brown first? Does the brown seem to make the gold area more accepting for washes and highlights rather than the thick..."coverage" the straight gold would?

I'm adding brown to the gold and mix them. This gives me better coverage and usually limits the number of layers to max 2. As a basecoat I used anything really: black, red. Never used white/grey, but potentially those would give a brighter color (which I avoid as gold is shiny enough without it).

As for washes- adding brown to the gold makes it softer, warmer. So I'd say, that shading with browns is easier as it adds to the already existing brown pigments. But I haven't experimented much with this, so I lack comparison really.

@Charlo: I love the 'dirty' look of your knights!

Used to be the standard way with the old shining gold to get a solid coat: 1:1 shining gold:scorched brown, to increase the pigment content.

Retributor armour has largely done awa with my need to do this due to being a paint with a high pigment count already - goes straight over black in 2 coats.

I’m partial to using warplock bronze as my base for most of my gold and then auric armor as the highlight. Small details that I want picked out but not obviously so I like to use Gehenna’s gold. Once in a great while, I might lightly dry brush a layer of rune fang silver on top if I want it slightly lighter.

Okay so I was going to say "no more WIPs until they're complete" but I can't keep you all out of the loop forever

So here is some progress. Added in details, some weathering powder and started the basing.

We're almost done now... To finish:

  • Powder - not going to go OTT but I think some more rust on the weapons is needed.
  • AK Oil/ Engine Grim effects - going to have some fun with these.
  • Basing - shade, drybrush, tufts and barbed wire.

Keep up the good work Charlo, she's looking fantastic!

Summer classes are almost over which means I'll be able to finally finish this snail paced vow. Just a little update, I've gotten all the bases ready, one Inceptor completed, one Inceptor in need of cleaning up and washing and one that I haven't touched yet.

Almost there :) Very clean work too!

I am pretty happy with this guy, he turned out well by my standards. I might call him Jolemai... ;)

Honoured

He looks gritty and imposing too - you wouldn't want to see him bearing down on you!

Six weeks left, fancy another go?

Six weeks to go folks!

Still lots of large outstanding vows, how's the progress going on those folks? Show us your WIPs, ask for advice, time to get that momentum rolling!

Haha! Now now...

Thanks very much, it’s a great model actually I am really glad to have done it some justice.

I have potentially 3 more vows don’t I? It might be wise to split the things I had in mind for Vow 3 up, in case I find myself short on time. I am pretty definitely going for at least one more Vow but need to check my RL schedule. Watch this space...

I nearly forgot that I still have Inceptors to do... :blush.:
Anyway I declare them finished now, so last gathering of strenght to finish the Stormtalon. Basecoat and basic shading already done. Getting ready for metallics and the pilot.
No matter the Valley of Procrastination! I WILL SEE THIS VOW COMPLETED! FOR SANGUINIUS!!

Ok well if I don't stop now i'm going to nitpick my work and get myself down. I had some issues getting my paint to smooth out but for my level of skill that's not surprising, ended up adding steel sling shot ammo to my droppers to help mix the pigment that had settled. Over all I just need more practice but they are table top ready.

Vow 1 Complete.

Great progress and completions guys! Keep the pace!

@ Closet Skeleton: I assume the vow is complete although you did not explicitly say so. Let me know it I got it wrong.

UPDATED TO THIS POINT!

ETL VI - WEEK 7 UPDATE

+++ETL VI - WEEK 7 UPDATE+++

Week 7 is over, and we are officially past the middle point of the event! Currently we have collectively completed 71,402pts which is roughly 1/5 of the total points pledged. Overall 19k pts were completed in the week, and they were promptly replenished with new vows of equal value.

As expected the Adeptus Astartes are in the lead but interestingly enough they are closely followed by the AoD with less than 400pts difference. Obviously the Astartes resources are vastly superior but that only matters if they complete their vows – something that historically has been a challenge. Be that as it may, Chaos and IFOR are pretty close too – although they have significant distance from the other two and Xenos are in the last position. Given the limited resources of the latter, it is imperative to achieve i) high completion rates especially among the first vows and ii) increase their re-vowing rate from 15% currently to at least double that.

Let’s see in detail:

BLOOD ANGELS:

The Blood Angels had a relatively slow week, but they could afford it. With a re-vowing rate of 31% they utilise their resources quite effectively although the completion rate of 18% is about the average of the Faction. Their main weakness of the relatively low average vow seems now less important as the gaps keep narrowing as the event progresses. The best strategy for them going forward is to intensify the completions of first vows and keep re-vowing at roughly the same points’ values. If they can keep the pace, they are in a position to threaten the top!

Following some hefty completions elsewhere, we've fallen down to sixth this week but don't let that dishearten you as we're well and truly in the mix! with just under six weeks to go we need to get these outstanding vows completed and squeeze in some more - we still have the third highest points pledged which means with a strong completion rate and a few more vows we can threaten the top!

Blood Angels have a reputation for the arts for a reason, show the B&C what we're made of!

Correct, three vows remain (and just under six weeks for them). Looking forward to what you come up with!

My progress:

What else needs doing? That WIP is on par with many of my completions

The tufts to finish basing these won't turn up for a while so I'll call them done in case I want to vow anything else.

I would say they are done? Basing not being part of the event and it has been attempted anyway :)

Closet, what are you thinking of a subsequent vow? Huge amount of respect for not only painting white Marines but making them looking stunning too :eek

Vow 1 Complete.

Exquisite work on these, they are above and beyond simply tabletop quality :) - how did you do the purity seal on the top chap?

Also, any thoughts on another go? Maybe another Character or a three-man squad?

For the moment I do not have anything left to paint for another vow, just 4 death company... But there is still time left, so ill be back!

Uggh... I want to do it, but so little time left in real life :P I'm currently studying blogs about OLS application. Luther's Stormraven and Xiphons are helpful but airbrush techniques are unavailable for me. Brush only :)

Base coat of oak brown then a quick shade of strong tone followed by a dry brush of skeleton bone, the wax seal was a base coat of uniform grey and a wash with blue tone.

I'll probably vow a relic contemptor with assault cannon but I want to hold off until I get him built so I can make a better evaluation of time left for ETL.
