If I had 3.5 weeks to make a GK ITC level army....

Before you start laughing... I know that sounds pretty funny right? Who would be stupid enough to even contemplate such a thing?

But let's say you were that silly to participate in an ITC event at 1750 points, because some heinous follower of the dirty Word Bearers manipulated you into with some dark warp powers.... what would you focus on?

Basically I'm going to be upfront about this. Work has been kicking my butt, and my motivation for doing a full army is dead as a result. Real life stuff, etc,etc... you guys don't need to hear about that crap so let's just say my choices are limited:

1. Deathguard (Not going to talk about that here!) I have 98.76% of the army painted that I would take. I'm just... well to be frank, bored of it a bit as I've played it a lot.

2. Custodes. I know how to play these guys fairly well. The problem is 3 days before I was 'warp manipulated' into participating into this tournament, my Custodes army (2,000 pts) sold beyond what I thought it would on Ebay. The "funny" thing is I have the whole army in boxes, and I'm assembling it as we speak! (painting would be a 3 week endeavor...lol)

3. Deathwatch. Codex is out on the VERY deadline of the tournament, giving me 2 weeks to playtest a list (I do own a fair amount of Deathwatch).

4. Grey Knights! I have not played them much at all in the past months since I rolled out Deathguard. Some of my friends think they are 'good' some think they are 'bad'. The FAQ giveth Smite, but taketh Alpha Strike!

The thing is aside from the load out of my Strike Squads being a bit goofy.... I have just painted VOLDUS! (just love that model) and half finished the unique Doomglaive Dreadnought!

What do I have? Good question....

Painted Inventory:

2 Termie Libbies (I know they kinda suck)

Voldus

2 Nemesis Dreadknights (they obviously could be BCNDKs)

1 Apothecary (he has a sword though)

1 Razorback

4-8 various Terminators, with/without heavies. With various CC weapons etc. (Not too keen on these guys though)

1 Doomglaive Dreadnought (well about... 65% painted to be fair)

Part Painted Inventory:

1 Purgation Squad (okay mostly painted with 2 of everything pretty much)

4-6 more Terminators/Paladins etc.

Draigo (actually he's about 85% done)

15-20 strikes/interceptors: I'd say 50% paint. I ripped some arms off because I had too many with swords which kind of stink now. I have a good mix of dual Falchions, and now some with Warning Staves, and Halberds. (still some are fully painted with just swords).

Unassembled:

Brother Captain

Termie Box

1 NDK.

Rhino/Razorback.

What do you guys think? Bad idea? Good idea? I need to know if you think I have a good .... 1750 list in there somewhere.

Alright... alright. If you are determined to play these guys...  Here is what I suggest.

Outrider Detachment - 990 pts. (PL 60)

Command Point: 1

[HQ] Lord Kaldor Draigo - 240 (PL 12)

- Gate of Infinity, Sanctuary, Smite

[FA] Interceptor (10-man) - 250 (PL 16)

- Two Falchions x9, Stave x1

- Hammerhand, Smite

[FA] Interceptor (10-man) - 250 (PL 16)

- Two Falchions x9, Stave x1

- Gate of Infinity, Smite

[FA] Interceptor (10-man) - 250 (PL 16)

- Two Falchions x9, Stave x1

- Vortex of Doom, Smite

==================================

This leaves you 760 points. You might not like this part. But if you want to be competitive and you want to have a chance at winning do the following:

Battalion Detachment - 757 points (27 PL)

[HQ] Tempestor Prime - 45 (PL 3)

- Tempestus Command Rod, Power Sword

- Relic: Kurov's Aquila

- Warlord Trait: Grand Strategist

[HQ] Tempestor Prime - 45 (PL 3)

- Tempestus Command Rod, Chainsword

[HQ] Tempestor Prime - 45 (PL 3)

- Tempestus Command Rod, Chainsword

[E] Militarum Tempestus Command Squad (5-man) -  114 (PL 3)

- Meltagun x4, Hot-shot Lasgun

[E] Militarum Tempestus Command Squad (5-man) -  114 (PL 3)

- Meltagun x4, Hot-shot Lasgun

[T] Militarum Tempestus Scions (5-man) - 78 (PL 3)

- Plasma Gun x2, Plasma Pistol, Hot-Shot Lasgun x2

[T] Militarum Tempestus Scions (5-man) - 78 (PL 3)

- Plasma Gun x2, Plasma Pistol, Hot-Shot Lasgun x2

[T] Militarum Tempestus Scions (5-man) - 78 (PL 3)

- Plasma Gun x2, Plasma Pistol, Hot-Shot Lasgun x2

[T] Militarum Tempestus Scions (5-man) - 78 (PL 3)

- Plasma Gun x2, Plasma Pistol, Hot-Shot Lasgun x2

[T] Militarum Tempestus Scions (5-man) - 78 (PL 3)

- Plasma Gun x2, Plasma Pistol, Hot-Shot Lasgun x2

You can have up to 5 of the Militarum Tempestus Scion units in reserve. Most likely the two meltas, two of the plasma toting fools, and one of the primes. Or you can just run with three in reserve the two command squads and one HQ. Drop them in a choice position with two orders and you're good. Remember to keep the warlord on the table and screen him with three of the troop options.

Anyway.. if I was deadset on running Grey Knights in a competitive environment I would do something like this.

Well I’m exploring my options because I literally don’t know what I can realistically finish.

Now as far as that list... it looks really good but I would take mono GK and don’t own any Astra. That said I see why you’d do it!

D6 smite won't reach anything half of the time if you do not have BroCap by his side. These are two models that you take both or don't take at all.

Fair enough. He does have a BroCap as well. But I don't think I'd drop anything for him. So maybe replace the ancient with the apothecary... maybe. I still like the ancient though.

Apothecaries are amazing. They have a lot of attacks for cheap and still have a 3+ with hammers. They wreck stuff.

I was not aware they could take hammers. Interesting.. Gonna have to take another look at them tonight.

Apothecarys with hammers are frequently MVPs in my group. However they can't carry the whole army so make sure you don't put too many points into characters.

Hey Prot if you end up rocking that Three GMNDK list and use the apothecary you can swap the third GMNDK to a hammer as well. Not sure how many points would be left after paying for the hammer for both units though. The Apothecary is only 90 points + the cost of the hammer though.

I would also start with the apothecary and paladins in the teleportarium for turn 2 devastation and run everything else on the board. The goal being to hopefully force your opponent to spend everything on the GMNDKs and Dreadnought and leave your strike squads free to cap points and pluck off some cheeky bolter shots at 24".

I would use Gate of Infinity to reach important targets if necessary but to cap points for sure! You might want to consider changing in one of the strike squads into a interceptor squad so you have that quick redeployment onto an objective when/if you need it and Gate is needed elsewhere or fails.

You could even consider Gating in the strike squad with vortex and attempt to drop vortex in a prime location.
