His Angels.... HH era Dark Angels PLOG

Recommended Posts

Angels come not in peace but in judgment...

-- Attributed to master Zephon of the 3rd order upon meeting diplomats from the Akkad IV....

I've been interested in building a Heresy Era dark angels force for some time, and only got serious about it since January, My first goal is a ZM style force I've dubbed "the firewing" because of the vast number of flamers in the army....

So far I've completed (or are in the finial stages of competing)
18 Legion veteran tactical marines
10 Legion Support marines magnetized with flamers (soon to have Melta guns as well)
1 castraferrum dreadnought with inferno cannon, Siege wrecker and DCCW with a heavy flamer
2 Veteran Sergeants with power fists
five man Heavy support squad with Heavy boaters

Stuff to work on

2 Sergeants with Power axes
2 Sergeants with Power swords/calibanite blades
Consul/Praetor with power axe and combs plasma (kitbashed dark vengeance captain)

So it begins.....

Writing fluff is part of the fun for me... I like to combine Historical, biblical and "Fanverse" sources to create a narrative

Squad Beta-Omicron: Heavy support squad armed with Voss pattern Heavy bolters, attached to the rogue trader trader Abu Al-Hadi of Haifa. Deployed as part of a Battalion size force made up of variety of units assembled around a core of Veteran Terran Legionaries of the 3rd order who's units suffered 90+% casualties during the Rangdan Xenocides. In the closing days of the Great crusade the squad was deployed as part of a demi-company size force on the edges of segmentum pacificus as part of Al-Hadi's interest in exploring the halo stars.

Still a work in progress but playable at this point, First squad largely assembled using a airbrush

Assignment to rogue trader trader fleets was often used by legion high command to get rid of Legionaries deemed unstable or ill fitting for regular line duty. Such was Legionary Zawisza. Surviving legion records indicate he was born out of wedlock to a Calibanite woman and a visiting Solar-Auxilia officer from the Emperors Fleet upon discovering caliban. He was recruited out of obscurity and served with little distinction as a line Heavy support legionary until chance reunited him with his birth-father some 50 years years later on campaign, Now a legate-commander. Zawisza apparently snapped and broke both legate's legs... Later claiming it was a fair trade for leaving Zawisza and his mother without financial support back on caliban. He was promptly transferred from line duty and served in a variety of exploratory fleets, and rogue trader trader flotillas. Eventually being assigned to Al-Hadi flotilla in the closing days of the great crusade.

Still have not done his eyes... I dread doing eyes....

Brother Erasmus, Neither Terran nor Calibanite but a second born son of venusian aristocrats who bent a knee to the emperor in the early days of the pacification of the sol system. Note the Green and Purple Heraldry associated with one the Venus orbital stations, apparently worn with permission given from legion command.

I just got tired of painting green and black and spiced things up with purple... The Shoulder pads are from Master crafted miniatures... good stuff, especially good for replacing badly designed MKII shoulder pads designed to break on the edges...

More stuff to come...

Work in progress dreadnought... In the final stages of painting  I got glue on the underside of the dreadnought sarcophagus... Debating using blood effects to cover it up. Or starting over and attempting to use debonding agent to remove the glue, historically I've had little success with such a product, they have a tendency to leave a white residue thats impossible to remove...

The Dreadnought is armed with a Inferno cannon for some AP3 Template goodness, which I have been told is quite the MEQ killer in ZM style games. I also have a OPP siege drill being built as well....

Bonus WIP Praetor/Consul with a Power axe (3rd party bit made by Trolls under a bridge). Might adjust the backpack and make the power axe longer....

Always great to see a boxy dread, the power axe has nice blades, something I'm usually left wanting for by GW's offerings. I would agree the axe needs lengthening, perhaps extending the haft from under the hands, as well as a little above?

Decided I needed matching Space marines so I Stripped the Flamer support squad, Primed, base coated ,zenithal lighted, and blocked in the metallics. Took about five hours but I am getting somewhere

WIP  veteran sergeant with a power fist, I imagine not every dark angel was a sword master, some would prefer less subtle weapons...

Veteran sergeant Guy-Sellón (unofficially referred to by his squad-mates as Silver-Tongued Sellón) was a longstanding Terran-born squad leader of the 3rd order, who had been raised to the role by virtue of being the most senior surviving member of his company in the wake of the casualties inflicted in the 3rd Rangdan Xenocides and the bio-pogroms that followed.

Got a Vet squad nearly done, It was largely painted before I had a airbrush, at some point I'll go back in and repaint them, however I don't look forward to metallic edges of mkIII armor, when it is fully assembled....

Sorry for the objectively bad photos

Squad Theta-Nu, a longstanding Terran born Veteran squad originally cobbled together from survivors of the companies of the 3rd Order, 7th Chapter who had been all but wiped out in the later actions of the Rangdan Xenocides. They spent the next century deployed in a variety of more specialized roles including rogue trader Trader Flotillas, Mechanicum explorator fleets, and protection of high level imperial diplomatic envoys in active combat zones. In the last years of the great crusade they had deployed with Al-Hadi's flotilla as part of 10 year tour exploring the outer reaches of Segmentum Pacificus.

Fixed the Eyes I screw up the first time I tried on the Legion support squad

Took peoples advice and lengthened the Axe on the Praetor. The handle covers most of the carnage caused by drilling through the pummel casting

Also Decided I needed a Apothecary, But the Kromlech kit I was using has significantly different proportioned arm length then a regular GW one, So I used kromlech close combat arm and added a charnabal blade, to represent a close combat weapon or power sword

The black is 2/3 minitaire raven black, 1/3 minitaire dark green with a couple drops of Golden airbrush medium. Then  semi-zenithal highlight with with VMC Basalt Grey (also thinned).....

The Plasma Coils took me three tries to get right, Used a combination VMC Royal Purple, and  VGC dead white to get the effect I wanted...

Went through the Flamer, melta and plasma weaponry and added burn tips to the weapon... Also varnished a bunch of stuff,

Debating what I want next from characters, Looked at Kitbashing a primus medicae using the chirurgeon bits from Fabius bile , or  the servo bits from a Primaris apothecary to represent experimental narthecium alternatives that fell out of favor during the second founding....

Update, The support squad is done except for new bases... A set of Necromunda bases in on root....

We can stand as Baleful Judges or Guardian angels… The choice is up to you….

The Vigils of the 1st

Historically Darks Angels deployments in rogue trader fleets were done in smaller sub-chapter deployments known as “Vigils” Which ranged anywhere from a squad to upwards of a chapter in strength. Principally these vigils were largely void born and lacked the true numbers to unilaterally bring entire civilizations into compliance as the grand expedionary fleets of the great crusade were infamous for. Instead the vigils were relegated to more specialist tasks, Boarding actions, Decapitation strikes, strategic raids and force protection being the most common. A secondary darker purpose of the vigils was to insure the compliance of individual Rogue trader with imperial edict and law. To which several rogue traders paid the ultimate price for violating by the closing years of the Great crusade.

Step aside archivist, the library burns, or you burn with it….

--Support Sergeant Akiva of the first legion: reputed words to the Guardians of the Great Library New-Antioch… Compliance action circa 998.M30

Seen above is Support Squad gamma-lambda Assigned to the Al-Hadi Flotilla in the closing days of the great crusade. In addition to line combat duties  they were infamous as tome-burners consigning books deemed counter to the edicts of the imperial truth to flame and destruction....
