Ork List wins GT3?!?!

WHAAAAaaaaaa??? Was honestly not expecting orks to win or even place very highly so I gotta say I am impressed. If anyone gets access to his official list post it here. I have been able to find some lists posted online but nothing official. From the things I found online it looks like his list included:

4x 30 boyz

2x 10 tankbustas

2x KFF big meks

6x KMK mek gunz

I haven't done the math but that feels like less than 2k so I'm sure there's more somewhere. I have also been seeing lots of claims that he "slow played" his way to victory. Honestly no idea, I wasnt there nor did I catch any of the games. What are some ways that orks (and other horde armies) can avoid being accused of slow play? Have you found any "hacks" or other ways of speeding up playing orks?

I totally expected this to be honest. Ork hordes are really strong and if you can find a way to move your models fast enough you will hit like a truckk.

Also he had the same points as a Dark Eldar and another army if I am remembering correctly. Though that might have been the points based off of Friday night.

He also had a couple chinorks, wierdboyz, and I think a boss and kff mek. It’s a pretty standard kind of set up, drown them in bodies and use tankbustas and kmks to deal with what boyz can’t. It’s just giant hordes are so counter meta that people aren’t prepared for it, they just don’t bring the weight of fire to mow down hordes.

Hordes are counter-meta? I haven't really been keeping track that much, but most times I keep seeing it said that hordes are exactly the thing with 8th. Which is a sizeable part of why Astra Militarum is so good.

I believe it's more typical to see one giant unit and otherwise MSU in the tournament meta, mostly due to how stratagems work. Running many large units would probably catch people off guard.

Boyz, tankbustas and KMKs are easily the best thing in our index list, so I'm not surprised. But I am happy to see it. I still stand by my early opinion that our army has the basis for a great codex.

gut reactoin:

I guess I'm just surprised that hordes of orks still work so well as I feel most of the other "bomb" horde units (cultists, guardians, etc) would insta-gib a full 30 man boy squads even with a 5++. Even non "bomb" units like mass venoms with 12 poisoned shots each, or aggressors/inceptor fire, or asscans seem like the bane of our existence.

random thoughts:

I guess because a true green tide has no like "alpha" units that these bombs can take out it works for orks, because like OK your cultists came in, veterans of the long war and endless cacaphony and you killed 30 boyz, great I have 3 more 30 man blobs? Oh your crazy BA melee unit came on and murdered a bunch of boyz... great bury them in green! This could explain how its "counter-meta"

Also since most armies will have some dedicated antitank (lascannon equivalents) green tide armies give them very few efficient targets to shoot at. Like great my 25 point lascannon being wielded by a 14 points model just killed a 6 point ork... hooray!

I found the list ...oddly small.

Now I want to play a list like that but bigger, better meaner and full of choppy bitz.

I think it had only 120 boys in 4 mobs at most.

Was the GT 1500 or 2000 points?

Can anyone tell me about this 'slow play'? Sounds effective, I'm interested...

Well done that guy. I think extreme armies do well as they catch the opponent out. When you play against them you find you've wasted points somewhere (either too much anti-tank or not enough).

It bodes well that someone can use the current Orks and win a tournament. The codex can only improve on this, you would imagine.

My army being Dakka (useless) and cheap vehicles (no longer cheap) is struggling. I'd love to see some more ways of playing rather than hordes which I'm not really into.

Slow play is, essentially, purposely playing your army very slowly to win via time-out. It's INCREDIBLY easy to do with horde armies, with Orks and Tyranids being the most notorious for it. It's also a very quick way to become known as "that guy" and make people not want to play with you if you do it enough

Thanks Gederas. I completely didn't make that clear. I was joking. I don't want to be 'that guy'. Having not experienced it myself and not knowing how annoying it is I was making light of it. I do regualrly play against a player who is 'slow at playing' but it isn't a tactic he is doing his best.

Ah, okay

But yeah, slow play is terrible and scummy tactic. Like, one of my friends LOST a 1k point tournament at our FLGS because someone slow-played Celestine's revival. By that I mean, he got Celestine's revival off. And then proceeded to spend ten minutes deciding where to place Celestine before placing her on the last objective, which got him the victory. And yes, the FLGS proceeded to put in a rule that you can't spend more than 5 minutes on any ability like that.

Doing it because you're a slow player isn't bad. Doing it purposely? You're a :cuss-ing jerk

Can you tell I've played against people who do that?

I'm actually a bit worried about when I'll play a full 2k orks list. While I don't have a million boyz to spam, the model count is still high compared to anything I've ever fielded. It's a problem because for example in my last game I had 28 infantry models, 3 tanks and 2 dreads in my BT list and even still it felt like all my turns were taking so long. I was facing an ork player with 170+ models so combined with that it was a long game indeed. Somehow I managed to win that one despite having no anti-horde to speak of, and it was also the "catalyst" for finally painting my own orks.

It's easy to stress but in practice, with practice, it's not difficult to handle large model count armies if you play them often.

My general strategy for not slow playing is to have my opponent help move my guys. With templates gone exact positioning isn’t nearly as much of an issue so people rarely have a problem with it.

That's the thing, nowadays I'm lucky to play a couple of times a year :D

I get in roughly 20 if I am lucky now days. I'd play a lot more if I lived closer to the shops and my friends.
For myself, I try to plan my army so that it's simple to use and packs a punch. The lest time I need to decide what to do the better lol.

The slow play involved never playing more than 3 turns apart from a kill point game which he completed comfortably, one game finished T2 the rest T3. 2k points and 2.5 hours per game.

He got zero best game awards, he got zero slay the warlord, he had 3k in kill points the 2nd lowest in the whole tournament and most of the top 10 had around 9k.

He is well known for slow play on the scene and GW have dropped points to 1750 off the back of this. He doesn’t have to play like this as he showed in kill point game, he knows the army well enough to finish games. He also knows an army like this will pick up VP early and then be caught up or beaten by T5 or T6 so you endlessly query minor rules, distances, call for a judge, and generally take as long as possible about every part of the turn. Hence zero in the best game award, GW used to have this give more tournament points but this time it made no difference.
