Hi all

Brothers of the first I've set myself a little challenge later in the year I have a pair of local tournaments that I allways go too. And I think this would be a good time to repaint my deathwing (as I'm a bit better than when I started the army 15+yrs ago ) so my question for you all is what would be the most competitive way to run a deathwing list? (As competitive as deathwing can be I guess) . Would it be all all terminators mechanised also one other thing forgeworld is not allowed (lame if you ask me)

What point level are we talking? At 2k I’ve been able to barely squeeze in three land raiders with a squad in each and a tech marine on a bike trailing behind. You don’t have the weight of fire to win on tabling your opponent but if you play on objectives a lot of armies have trouble dealing with it. One land raider is easy to deal with, three less so.

Sorry my bad 2000pts for both

Given that you need things on the ground that basically gives you two options. Either all mechanized in battle wagons, or teleport them down and have a bunch of fire support dreadnoughts. Maybe stormravens? I don’t have any so I couldn’t tell you how those work.

I haven't played pure deathwing so far, mainly because I think the command points you get from a battalion are essential these days. But I like your commitment to make it work.

From my experience from playing against a few armies who transported terminators in a stormraven it seems like the best choice for transport these days. They could work well delivering asmodai and some knights. Landraiders are in a weird spot right now I feel, if you bring one it mostly get focused instantly and it is too expensive for being just a turn 1 transport. Its price is also the reason I find it hard to justify 2 or 3 in a list. Stormravens tend to survive a bit longer and get more work done besides just transporting.

I would definitely keep belial and 10 stormbolter terminators (maybe add 2 missile launchers) in deepstrike to get deathwing assault going, although it is very expensive in a pure deathwing army. A terminator librarian can help with your charges. He can also be the warlord with brilliant strategist to get at least the opportunity to get some command points back.

No forgeworld sadly means no leviathan dreadnought, which is a beast. But for some long range support venerable dreadnoughts with 2x twin autocannons and 2 x twin lascannons have been constant performers for me this edition.

I like the stormraven option over land raiders myself but have never tried any. I think I'm going to play around with some lists see what I can come up with

Going through the list of what the DW have to offer, Im guessing you could/should:

Bring in DWK/LC Termies/TH&SS Termies, in Stormravens, with Ancients to buff them and maybe a TDA Chap

Bring in a 10-man squad of storm bolters and missiles for DWA. Add Belial for better results

Fill the backline with anti-tank ven dreads

I've been playing mechanized deathwing for a minute or two.  It's pretty challenging, but incredibly fun.  As long as you target the enemy anti-tank first, three land raiders will rule the table uncontested.

If you want to give it a go, I only recommend Crusaders, you're going to need the dakka, and they're slightly cheaper than Phobos pattern land raiders.  I would take Belial and a TDA librarian, and three squads. The librarian is good for casting aversion or smite, and lets you take the tanks in a spearhead and the termies in a vanguard for a bonus CP.  The three decent builds are SB/PF, lightning claws, and knights, but I probably wouldn't take both lightning claws and knights in the same list, they're a bit redundant.  So let's say two units of knights and one unit of dakka.  You can use the land raiders to shape LOS so that the dakka guys can get out and shoot in such a way that only the target has LOS back to them, which helps keep them alive, and you can do a similar thing to keep the knights from taking fire while they're pounding on a target.  You could consider taking a deathwing ancient to give one of the knights units +1A while the other one gets rerolls from Belial, or, if you're trying to bring down something like a Supremacy Armor, maybe you need both characters buffing the same unit of knights.  You'll also have the option of running one of the tanks empty and deepstriking the shooty squad, but I'd only do that if you make them a hard five models, so you don't get charged 3CP for DWA.  That plan also gives you a spare ride for the knights in case one land raider goes down before you destroy the enemy's antitank capability.

Any reason for 3 crusaders instead of 1 with 2 storm Ravens? The storm Ravens have a better move and only trade a little volume of fire for much better anti tank.

Part of the reason might be boot on the ground - with such a small elite army, its easier for the opponent to kill everything that's not a flyer and autowin that way.
