Vechicles in the Deathwatch

So I was looking at building a list and it came down to dealing with large creatures/vehicles.  My choices are I can go with a few dreads setup lc/ml to provide some kick.  The other approach was to go with a sicarian venator(approx 230 points) and possibly a second tank to support it(around 215 pts). 

 

1. do you think armor is worth taking?

2. what are your plans on  how to deal with large creatures/vehicles?

Venerable Dreadnoughts with TLLC and a fist are the best use to us. They give desperately needed long range punch, and with their D3 fists are great as counter attack units finishing off big things which normal veterans struggle with.

This makes me happy to see as I love the Dreadnoughts and have been wanting to build one. Does anyone know what the Venerable Dreadnought in the Start Collecting box has for weapon loadouts in the box?

I've seen a few people swear by the sicarian venator so that could be an option. And outside of a lascannon ven dread and a las-back, I would also consider a small deep striking combi-melta team as well.

 

I usually run a 3-4 combi-melta team with a couple of regular veterans, and they have killed everything I target. And that was disembarking from a blackstar... now I can deep strike them.

Whirlwind Scorpius is exactly 215 points. Every time I bring it eats vehicles and monsters alike. Average 12 shots at 2D ignoring LoS is nothing to scoff at!

This makes me happy to see as I love the Dreadnoughts and have been wanting to build one. Does anyone know what the Venerable Dreadnought in the Start Collecting box has for weapon loadouts in the box?

If I remember correctly its twinlinked lascannon, assault cannon and plasma cannon.

^ plus the ML. It's a shame we don't get access to some of the other weapon options like the rifleman (2x twin autocannons) but I suppose getting to use the teleportarium strat more than makes up for it

Thank you both. This is my first SC box and new to the hobby so wasn't sure what goodies they have inside. I haven't opened anything yet to look at it because my wife wants me to take it all back for a refund if I don't like 40k after playing a couple of games. :D

I would mostly limit my vehicles to dreadnaughts for the mission tactics.  I would also limit them to shooting platforms since we have hordes covered in spades, our lists lack anti medium-heavy durability units. 

 

The mortis dread/contemptor/leviathan options will really help fill gaps, especially if deep struck in.

IMHO it completely does, especially given this gives our Dreadnoughts the much-needed first strike advantage and allows them to close the gap to enemy forces to a degree other codexes could only dream.  Really, for DW Dreadnoughts the CCW is the most important tool because there's a pretty good chance they'll actually get to use it, nevermind that it answers literally any threat you could dream of (other than Supersonics, but we can deal with those in other ways) :)

I've actually borrowed a friend's Armigers and had tremendous success with them. They're fast, tanky, and are laser focused on killing armor, letting DW cut down Infantry from their now well screened Rhinos.

 

Not codex, but 3 are great for a 720 point 3cp Super Heavy detachment plug n play.

A leviathan with storm cannon or even twin storm cannon drop in buff with a librarian next to a watch master

That thing has some serious firepower available

 

Dropped in my leviathan with storm cannon and siege claw behind my friend's chaos space marine army ... he made a mistake and left a gap with his demon prince warlord being furthest back ... the leviathan destroyed him.  Fun lol

Leviathan is super good right now, with the deepstrike capability and storm cannons, it can reliably delete 1-2 units. Since it is a dread is benefits from your mission tactic, and you can use the +1 to wound stratagem to really bring the pain.

Don't forget you get access to the Mortis dread in the Imperial Armor Index.  None of the Venerable bells & whistles but you can still build a 2x autocannon or 2x lascannon dread for the backfield for pretty cheap.

Took an autocannon mortis dread to pay the relic tax for my leviathan ... pretty cheap and putting out 8 autocannon shots a turn was great ... BS3+ makes it kind hard to move and shoot but still great.

 

Thinking of dropping one of my redemptors and replacing it with a relic sicaran.  I like the idea of 8 mobile autocannon shots and its cheaper than my plasma redemptor that really never gets anything done lol

Hardest part of the Leviathan for me is the mandatory heavy slot.  We just dont have anything cheap to unlock it outside of maybe FW rapiers. Probably a Mortis dread is the best option to fill in the gap.

Though there is kinda no point in deep striking any of DW dreads save for Redemptor - I am honestly pondering dual gatling one with supporting captain :whistling:

 

I'd also stay away from FW cheese, IMO it will be next thing after Raptors to receive nerf bolt hit, not to mention being kinda wonky from fluff standpoint...
