Blue is the new Black

Recommended Posts

I’ve been looking through posts on here for a long time, so thought I’d take some photos and share my work. I’ve been painting off and on for a while now, and I first got into Templars after a long hiatus from the hobby. My choice of Templars was due to a) Wanting a close combat army and just so having some old Space Wolf models in need of converting b ) really liking the fluff of Templars and c) thinking that black would be an easy colour to respray and paint.

I’ve since learnt that c) was not actually as straight forward as I thought! I’d been looking for ways to improve my painting and stumbled across an article (http://figurementors.com/painting-black-power-armour-by-giovanni-di-lena for those who are interested) and found a definite improvement in my technique (although a painting course and airbrush definitely helped!). Effectively, rather than using Abbadon black for the armour, a mix of blue and black is applied over the base coat, which gives more depth to the overall finish of the armour.

So anyway, here are the results of my first foray using this new technique:

Crusader Squad 1

Crusader Squad 2

And my personal favourites. These guys took a long, long time, but I’m really happy with the results. The banner is free hand, definitely the most complex thing I’ve attempted but thankfully not as difficult as I thought it would be.

My previous technique involved drybrushing eshin grey over the base coat, and then adding a nuln oil wash. I’m still happy with these models, but am fighting the temptation to update them to the new scheme.

Grimaldus – I’m still really happy with this guy, and will be working on his servitors soon (I hope). If I do, I may well update his base as well, just to make him really stand out.

Let me know any thoughts, and I’ll update as soon as I have more to share!

I am a big fan of desaturated palettes, so I really like what I am seeing. Quite fortuitously, there is an inter-forum painting competition going on that you  might be  interested in. Mostly for fun (well, maybe some bragging rights :)  ), it's a great way to help a good cause and motivate yourself. I became a Templar for ETL I and never looked back.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Cheers,

Nice job on the banner, I haven’t been a Templar now for a few years but this makes me reminisce of long days at the painting table. Great job.

A new addition to the Crusade! I've always loved this model, so I'm glad that I finally got a chance to paint him. I bought him a couple of years ago as a fine cast model, and when I look up close I can definitely see where that system wasn't quite as good as some of the models we get now. He would have been an addition to ETL, but sadly his base and under coat had already been done. In any case, I'm quite pleased how he turned out, and a little surprised at the size of the model compared to some of the other Templars!

Agree, that era of models put out some amazing sculpts and your rendition certainly honors the sculptor and our chapter.

Play on!

Thanks!

The Aquila's freehand and quite fun to paint. I accidentally took too much of an angle with it, but I quite like the effect so kept going.

The shield actually comes from the forgeworld black Templars brass set. This was one of the first models I've been able to use them properly on.

Ah cool, Thanks it did look kind of sculpted.

Can you still buy the etched brass anywhere?

It's been discontinued for a while now, along with the transfer sheet, the venerable dread, upgrade doors etc. Only thing I think they still sell are the storm shields... Much as I like the heresy, it pretty much annihilated Forgeworld support for non legion, regular 40k stuff.

Though back on topic, The_Hugernaught, how did you paint the scratches on the Eddy? Are they just light grey streaks?

Well for the full guide I'd recommend visiting http://figurementors.com/painting-black-power-armour-by-giovanni-di-lena, it's a really good guide on painting black including the scratches (the link hasn't been working today, but you can Google the name to get elements of the guide if it doesn't come back up).

Effectively it was thin lines of my second highlight colour (Vallejo grey blue), using my third highlight colour (fenrisian grey) where any lines crossed. Then I just used the base colour to break any edge highlighting above the scratch to make it look like a chip. I hope that makes sense!
