Dynamic CPs for Detachments?

Hey Everyone,

I’ll guess I’ll start of with a little back ground, so you can understand my point of view. I’m a Dark Angles player and I play them exclusively. I’m not a very experienced or competitive player and have never attended a tournament event. Warhammer for me is an entertaining evening moving models around a table, rolling some dice with casual conversation & a few beers, I guess what I’m saying is I’m no expert on the game and I’ve no interest in mix/matching factions to maximise CPs nor min/maxing lists to create ultra tuned highly competive lists, well most of the time anyway.

Enter my dilemma, throughout 8th I’ve struggled to create thematic & fun lists that still operate efficiently and perform decently when doing battle with that of my friends. Post ‘Big FAQ’ my issue seems exacerbated as I feel like every list I build starts with a double Battalion core to ensure sufficient CPs for strategium shenanigans. Before the FAQ, my lists were typically 1 Battalion & either a combination of 1 or 2 Outrider/Vanguard/Spearhead detachments. Either way you went, that’s a whole lot of HQs, or in the case of my Deathwing & Ravenwing list, you had to choose between a lot less CPs, or a HQ & Troop tax, again deteriorating from the theme & efficiency of the army.

Then it occurred to me, why do you get 5 (previously 3) CPs for a Battalion no matter how many extra battlefield slots you fill up? Likewise, why is an Outrider 1 CP for a HQ, 3 Fast Attack plus any other option you take up? I’d be pretty interested in seeing CP rewards for taking detachments be more dynamic and not just a fixed amount. Say you fill out a bare bones Battalion and are awarded with a base 3 CPs, then take up an extra 3 slots, in any combination and are awarded with another 2 CPs, split those 3 choices evenly between Fast Attack, Elites & Heavy Support, and we’ll give another 1 CP. The combinations are endless and more dynamic than what we have now which I believe, if the treatment was extended to all detachments, offer greater flexibility to list building then the current model were you always feel like something, somewhere is just a tax for something else, if you get my meaning.

Thinking about emailing to GW, but would be interested to hear the thoughts of more experienced players first.

Thanks.

I think that could be one way of doing it. I almost think unpairing CPs partially from Detachments could work too. Something like you get X base CP then 1 more per every Y points in the list. Then give smaller bonuses for Detachments. 1 for what currently gives 1, 2 for a Battalion, 5 for a Brigade, or something like that. Something to keep a bit of an edge for troops heavy lists, but not an 8CP swing like you could see now.

I like the idea of a single Detachment generating CPs the more you use it. The specialist detachments were designed for specialised armies, for example of I wanted to take a Terminator army.

Perhaps limit players to 2 branches - a single Battlion detachment plus Auxiliary Detachments and a single Command Detachment and you get 3 CPs for Battleforged plus one for each Troops Choice you field?

To limit MSU spam you can either rely on fixing Codex books (i.e. give Marines a bonus for taking more than 5 models in their Tactical squads) or say only full squads constitute a CP.

Whatever really. Just something I thought of. Obviously needs work to balance.

Other branche could be the specialists for themed armies Outrider, Spearhead etc.
