‘Unplayable’ Subtheme Armies

Inspired by recent Battle Brothers Rule and my own grumbling in regard to Fallen and Kroot. I am curious what armies, need only 1 or 2 units to a pure ‘themetic’ force.

The only four that I can think of are; Kroot, Skitarri, Beastman (Tzaangors) And Corsairs. Which all four require an HQ Choice. Through the Legion/Assassins/SoS also are in this vote had they not gotten their exceptions.

Are you looking for small themed armies that aren't affected by the Rule of 3? Or armies that have very few units that have to adhere to the Rule of 3?

For the former I can think of Deathwing and Ravenwing. For the latter maybe Inquisition?

It’s hard to say as we haven’t had the codex yet but Imperial Knights could have an issue with this. If they confine the armigers to a single entry with different weapon options then they’ll only be able to take 3. Hopefully each variant will have its own entry

Cypher and the Fallen are effectively unplayable. They took away their infiltration ability, not even available as a strategem anymore, but then also removed their ability to get in rhinos.

So you're left with a unit that has to run everywhere, but a shooting ability (reroll 1s) that only works if they stay still that turn.

Pretty sure they'll 1-2 unit size in the codex

Legion of the Damned is still in this boat because of Rule of X because they're not a troops unit and including them in an Adeptus Astartes detachment cuts off your ability to use Chapter Tactics/Red Thirst/Grim Resolve as well as Chapter-specific stratagems/BA/DA stratagems if you don't include at least one detachment that doesn't include LotD.

Sisters of Silence have an HQ choice - Primaris Psykers - but including them does break the ability to play a pure faction.

Another force affected by the soup rules as well as Ro3 is the Inquisition. At the moment, there are only three ways to take Inquisitors:

* Vanguard detachment with Jokaero/Acolytes

* Supreme Command detachment

* Auxiliary support and lose a CP

A pure Inquisition force is also out of the question since the only keyword they share in common with anyone in the Imperium is "Imperium".

I was immediately affected by both of these. I miss my converted Legion squad that has run in my space marines since 5th ed.

I also recently got Eisenhorn to lead 3 assassins with my Deathwatch. GW says nope right after I buy him.

I think the biggest one is probably Deathwing.

Between half reserves, no T1 close deepstrike and rule of 3, I don't think Deathwing can even really field a valid army.

Can't they take land raiders and storm ravens though? Not to sure about this...

I actually think Deathwing are one of the better supported armies on this list, by a long shot! Dont they have the Deathwing knights plus Deathwing Command group entries plus basically any character they like as options too? (Not got the codex, just the Index for them)

Compare to something like Corsairs that cant even form a FOC without bringing in other Eldar (Who cant synergise or buff them).

RE: Deathwing and Ravenwing...both have more than enough entries to field valid armies.

However, GW have made it very clear that they do not see these,or intend for these to be fielded, as individual subgroups (if they did they would have structured the stragems different and given an army structure more towards what they did with Dark Eldar).

Dark Angels scream to be played with 2 of the three 'wings' (though i am desperatly trying to get a tri-wing list working). My current list is a base of Greenwing, with Deathwing as a hammer (with a Ravenwing Dark Talon thrown in because its AWESOME!)

As mentioned above, Legion of Death, Corsairs, Renagade Knights, are some 'legitimate' factions that are compeltly unplayable in current rules.

FOR THE LION!

Deathwing is the easiest themed army in the game to get around the suggestion of three. You have your Deathwing terminators, Deathwing Knights, cataphracti, and tartaros. All get to be in the Deathwing, that’s twelve squads, 120 max terminators. That seems like plenty. That’s not even counting all flavors of land raiders or dreadnoughts. I mean, it’s not competitive by any means, but massed terminators never have been. Fun though!

Renegade Knights are playable. Just take a Super Heavy Detachment or the Auxiliary Detachment.

Out of interest and facing the danger of another unfinished project: what would a renegade Knight army currently look like as a playable list... this might be a fun way of getting a tabletop ready ( non competitive) army and an excuse to finish or expand my loitering knight chassis?

Without the rule of 3, yes. Otherwise you just can't fill 2k with 3 Knights. ^^

I'm not familiar with Renegade Knight rules, but regular knights are on different datasheets. What makes the Renegades different than that?

As you probably have already guessed the fact that there's only one "Renegade Knight" datasheet with lots of loadout options. ^^

Probably the most unplayable "army" certainly with rule of three. Also, i think the on most likely to languish with out GW support.

Ummm no actually you are wrong......have you forgotten about the FW knights??? They all have have the same faction keyword as renegade knights

All of them can be taken in a Renegade Knights list so you can take a full renegade knight list at 2k even with the rule of 3
