Well bike spam is king

Geoff Robinson just won the invitational with list like mine, mostly bikes and culexus and guard CP battery.

And mike porter similar list winning (I think) the 400 person tournament

It will be interesting to see where the median player with the vertus praetor spam list ends up. Its a strong list in the hands of an experienced player for sure.

I just painted up my vertus praetors, bracing myself for the incoming nerf in the next Chapter Approved haha.

I think its a binary army that spikes well.

You see the guy that barely failed a 4++ all tournament win it all but you don't see the guy that lost 5 bikes to a bad saves against a bunch of lasguns.

Which is not the say its not a very strong army.

I think he’s been playing that list since day one and it never got GWs attention.

Quite frankly I now await the hammer from GW. Even more so if a GW employee would have played against it. Get your games in while you can.

So very very true. I got by an ITC styled DE poison/lance army. I got so incredibly lucky and I know it. Ask my opponent though.... he says the invuln save is impossible to get through.

The guy Geoff played in the final he also played in a game just before it and lost 20-0. I’m not saying it’s not a really good list but a lot factored into the win more than just the list

Making really good/conisitant saves.

The mission.

Geoff’s tactics changing so well to give him a much better chance.

Also his opponent said he drew poorly on maelstrom (always a possability)

And the eternal war objective that was removed for hiis Opponent was the one he was castle’d up on top of so really didn’t help.

One of the shield captains living so long in the enemy backfield really tipped the game over the edge for Geoff.

All just my opinion but that’s what I got from watching the stream.

Anyone look at the boards? They look...terrible. That terrain was god awful.

Yep - pretty well documented it's been shocking. GW reportedly sent them crates of terrain to use and they went with un-sprayed polystyrene walls instead... But back on topic:

I don't think this really says anything like "Oh Bikes/ Custodes are OP" because really, I don't think they are. They are frighteningly strong, yes, but as with all Custodes units, it's often down to how good you are at rolling 4++ saves. They also occupy a very "Meta" spot in being tough enough to not care about small arms, tanky enough to shrug off big guns, numerous enough to not be a big one-model target, extremely fast, good stratagem support AND fit-for-purpose firepower.

However what is OP is having:

  • Unlimited CP
  • Bodies for Objectives
  • Indirect Fire

...for sub 200 points in any Imperium army. Nothing beats that as a choice in efficiency and return on investment. This is what GW need to sort out. However, what would that mean for the Golden Boys - would they ever get a look in at a Competitive level again?

You can change IG easily and there are still some very powerfull allies for custodes.

Blood angels with captain with thunderhammer and jumppack, whatever other character and 3x5 scouts. Slamguinius is a pretty solid source of damage.

Black Templars with 3x5 scouts, the black templar stratagem (real solid for custodes) and a couple of lone cenobites to hold objectives in your backfield for cheap.

Deathwatch with 3x5 intercessors (SIA is great) and whatever characters. Lord of hidden knowledge lets you farm CP like the IG warlord does. This cuts deeply into your amount of ikes however.

Sisters. Cheap and just solid overall.

I think Custodes are quite counter meta. But will lose to good player playing eldar or dark eldar or even tau and necrons. It’s pretty terrain and mission type and format dependent. Stilll. I’m quite practiced now with this list and I feel like it can top 10 in a GT for sure

Yeah, I think this is a testament to how well Geoff played: Yes, there were a lot of mitigating factors that went his way - but like a good player he capitalized on them. Bikes are fun, but they're still hit and miss against anything that sports a lot of AP-2. Oh, and mortal wounds - we love mortal wounds... :P

It was a tricky game with some very questionable play by his opponent Alex Harrison, close to outright cheating with FtGG, moving wound marker, claiming clear the skies with 2 jetbikes on the table, etc. Not pleasant to watch. Alex was caught nudging models into range while live streamed at LVO I think it was previously, so yeah not the best advert. Alex has been banned now from entering LGT for life, seems extreme I’d have thought 12 months tough enough but YMMV.

The bikes did a lot of work early but Geoff had a lot to do to keep from being tabled late game and he was having to adapt to a different style of play too. Geoff got his luck in the semi final when his opponent rolled really low, at one point he rolled 1,1,1 so recollect and got 1,1,1! Good job all in all by Geoff.

The terrain looked awful but every table had the same so it was consistent and importantly LoS blocking. GW terrain is awful for LoS blocking unless you are playing ITC rules where all ground floor walls are considered pure LoS blocking, holes and windows ignored. I would not have been happy to pay £50 and find that terrain on table but it served its purpose even if it will put some people off returning or entering in future.
