Speculation on When an =][= Codex Might be Released

Recommended Posts

I'm completely out of the loop on what factions/armies have received codices and who's still waiting, plus who's rumoured to be up next. Therefore I thought I'd just start a little thread here asking others for a quick rundown and your thoughts on where me might slot in. It seems to me that a good chunk of the main factions at this point have codices, correct?

Probably would be easier to list who doesn't have a codex, then we can start the discussion on what order we think those groups may get their satisfaction.

The only rumour I'm aware of is of Sisters of Battle with a new plastic line in early 2019 but I live under a rock so that may well be incorrect.

That's correct, Orks are likely highest on the list once the Knights codex comes out along with Space Wolves. I'm not sure on Sisters, but given it's a fairly safe assumption that they will focus on converting the existing range to plastic it's possible GW could release the codex before the models are released? Hard to say as I'm sure they'd like to do it all at once for maximum impact but it's new territory either way.

There's a few other smaller codices, like Genestealer Cults and Assassins along with the Sisters of Silence perhaps? I wouldn't mind Assassins getting bundled in with the Inquisition as it's been that way before and they don't have enough to warrant a codex proper. Sisters of Silence will need more choices before they can make the transition to 40k proper, Custodes style, so are likely out of the running for now.

So, overall, I don't think we have terribly long to wait but that could depend on GW's plans (as ever!). This is assuming we're looking at an Inquisition codex update, but if there's to be new options or something then I'd say we're in for a fairly long wait while GW gets things sorted. With the Rogue Trader model bits recently shown GW appears to be willing and able to dip into the older school which is a good sign for Inquisition. As much as I'd like some attention sooner, I think I'd be happier to wait for more gubbins :smile.:

TL;DR: nothing concrete on the rumour front - yet

So if Orks and Knights come out over the summer ... it seems to me that an Inquisition codex is certainly possible within the next 12 months. It doesn't sound like there is a whole lot else waiting for a codex.

I'm ok with waiting if that means proper treatment.

I would be surprised if Sisters Of Battle were out early next year, my money would be more on a summer release at the earliest. I just don’t think they’re far enough along to expect anything before then.

As for an inquisition codex, we may not get one. If we do I have a feeling it will be an Agents of the Emperor one with some other units thrown in.

We know Sisters of Silence will be a fully playable, independent army. However at this stage we don’t know if that means their own codex or if they will be doing it via the Talons of the Emperor Imperial armour book from Forgeworld. In other words, relying on Forgeworld for a lot of the units that make them a viable independent army like HQs and vehicles. This book is supposed to be finished this summer but it’s FW so that could mean anything :)

We know that the rest of the main codexes should have been released by September so anything that isn’t SW, Orks, Genestealer Cults or Imperial Knights should be some time after that.

It makes me sad that Genestealer Cults is now a "main codex" and we're discussing how Inquisition may not even get a codex. How things have changed since the glory days of 3rd edition when we had Codex: Daemonhunters and Codex: Witchhunters ... I guess those codices just didn't sell well enough

INQ is just in such a weird place...!

The models are just outdated enough that they really need an entire overhaul and now they've been stripped away from their respective Chamber Militants (SoB, GK, DW) they don't have much that is very unique outside of "sandbox human that isn't really sandbox because of model limitations" and a few random single-model units.

Even Deathcult Assassins, Crusaders & Flagellents have been thieved by the Adeptus Ministorum and will most likely stay that way when the Sisters Codex is released, or sadly, be retired outside of using index profiles (old models!)

GW know this and I think will no doubt have big plans for the faction going forward but I think this is where the Rogue Trader box game comes in. Post release these models need 40k rules and a book to call home and this will most likely be an Imperial Agents book - probably some rules about incorporating them into detachments without foregoing faction-bonuses too.

Additionally, I think Inquisitors may be the answer to one of the current "problems" of 40k, which is the rampant use of the 200pt Command Point Guard Farm. For those not in the know, essentially any Imperium army can bring a Cadian Imperial Guard commander, some goons with mortars and using a specific warlord train/ relic combo get unlimited* CP. Obviously very useful for armies like Custodes, Marines or anything else that won't get CP easy or needs to bring "bad" units to do so (massed Tacticals, basic GK etc). Fluffwise though, this means that the single Guard commander is in charge of the battle operations over the likes of Astartes or even the Emperor's own guard themselves (hell, Guilliman could be present... Yet the Guardsman is the Warlord? Yikes.)

So where do =][= come in? Okay you can only bring a second imperial faction in your army if your warlord is an =][=! This represents them commissioning the force and using their absolute authority where possible. Then again maybe that's overkill!?

I don’t think it’s that they didn’t sell I think it’s more to do with what Charlo says. They stripped Grey Knights away from Daemonhunters and Sisters from Witchhunters. It basically left the inquisition with a load of HQs and support characters but no actual army to command or support.

I’m hoping they either let Inquisition and other agents join a detachment without breaking its keyword or they allow Inquisition to requisition other troops from Imperial codexes and rather than them have their usual faction bonuses they are given something new by the inquisitor dependent on his quarry. Similar to how deathwatch can choose certain tactics based on a particular foe.

MARK0SIAN, I like your thinking. I have no idea whatsoever what GW has in mind for Inquisition -- if anything. I just hope we get something. And I REALLY hope we don't vanish again. There was a time period in 5th where we were pretty much non-existent, being little more than a footnote in the GK codex that could not be used solo and in those dark days I ran Colonel Straken as my Inquisitor and an IG command squad as his retinue.

Worse comes to worse, I suppose the same could be done again, although I doubt things go that far. Just being able to use Inquisitors without breaking key words and without an acolyte tax would be a step in the right direction, although I'd prefer that acolytes get some new models and new rules.

I imagine it'll be one of the last codexes, because it has the problem of not really being a complete army at all. Once Sisters and Grey Knights were stripped out, as was said above, it's just sort of a bag of random units. Look at even the smallest armies and it's pretty safe to say that GW wouldn't put them out without at least one troops kit, a few other kits, and enough to make a full army out of. Based on that, I don't think we'd see them in a multi-codex wave, but rather as a full army release in their own right.

The exception to this would be if they were simply an Imperial Agents supplement, but that seems like it would just upset a ton of people that Imperial Soup :stupid tiny cellphone interface posted here: gets even stronger, unless they were going to also put out a Chaos Agents and Xenos Agents line. Which would be awesome but I'm not sure it would happen.

So tl:dr, it'll probably be awhile unless they have top secret plans already underway.

You know that time in the far future when the sun has shriveled to a hunk of smoldering coal the size of your forehead?

After that.

Coincidentally I’m re-reading the Book of the New Sun right now. Severian, being a member of the Guild of the Seekers of Truth and Penitence would probably be an Inwuisition player. Although our sun has only gone to red in that book and still has a ways to go before it’s a cold black coal ... I guess he’s waiting then too.

ahhh the days of daemonhunters. That was the first codex I bought. I was rather upset that they took them out. And I thought with the battle brothers rule, that maybe MAYBE they would kick it back up by throwing it in the Deathwatch. Sadly no. My thing is even if they were thrown a codex. Is it purely meant to be an allied force? I'm only doing it for fluff purposes. Would love to see them have a comeback. I see so many conversions into making them.

It's really frustrating that a code isn't that likely... Especially when it would be so easy!

It would be Imperial Agents for sure, and include all the little forces that don't really fit anywhere else. Inquisition, Rogue Traders now, Assassins, Sisters of Silence. Some of these have new models so they're set, some like the Rogue Traders are on the way but others really don't need models. It could be the DIY faction. Give some guidelines and let people loose!

I have some hope from the Guard Codex because they showed off plenty of conversions there. Just give a guide to what Acolytes should kind of look like and leave it at that. No new models needed because by combining a couple of current GW kits, you can make some cracking looking Acolytes.

It seems like such a missed opportunity! that is of course, unless GW are planning exactly the above. I mean, plastic sisters and Rogue Traders are on the way so who knows what's possible!

It’s seems a bit hard for me to believe that in a day when Harlequins, Genestealer cults, Sisters of Silence, and Rogue Traders all have models (heck in Necromunda there’s even a Squat) that Inquisition will get squatted. Especially when we just got a new model in Eisenhorn.

=][= will still be around. Maybe it will just be as individual heroes as in the 3rd edition BRB days. If so then they at least need a special formation or be allowed to be taken as HQ for any imperium army without breaking keywords.

The latest beta rules really increase the need for an Inquisition or Imperial Agents Codex. If you fielded an Inquisitorial Henchmen Warband from late 7th edition (which was fairly similar to options from the 5th edition eCodex), then you need a mixture of Inquisition, Astra Militarum and Adeptus Ministorum units. With the Battle Brothers beta rule, you could need three detachments just to get your Warband in the table: and then the Rule of Three would prevent you from taking anything else in competitive play, so no Grey Knights, Deathwatch, SoS or Assassins.

So, I think we need a Codex that lets you take all those “specialists” (DCAs, Arcoflagellants, Crusaders, Priests, Enginseers, Psykers) as Inquisition units.

Was the talons of the emperor book announced at some point by FW? Never even heard of the fact that doing it, let alone a finish date!

I’m not sure if it was announced previously but the first time I found out it was going to be a full book was at Warhammer Fest in the Forgeworld Seminar. They showed it as one of their upcoming products and talked about what was in it. Basically every Custodes model and Sisters of Silence model (including some new ones coming out) are going to be in it with 40k rules.

The guy writing it said he expected to be finished around August time, which makes sense as it gives them time to process feedback from the telemon beta rules they released. As with anything Forgeworld though, I’m taking their supposed finish date with a pinch of salt :)

I could definitely see a new "Imperial Agents" book introduced, featuring Inquisition and Assassins. They'll probably have some rule along the lines of "Imperial Agent models can be included in any other Space Marine, Astra Militarum, Adeptus Custodes, Adepta Sororitas or Adeptus Mechanicus detachment as if it had that detachments keywords", given that we can no longer use "Imperial" as the common detachment keyword.
