Fighting Necrons after their codex?

Bulwyf

Recommended Posts

I have not faced Necrons since their codex came out. I have a definite game coming up, 2k points, against a Necron player in a friendly game.

So what have you found to watch out for with post codex Necrons? Is there any units you'd definitely bring? You don't want to shoot lascannons at Necrons with quantum shielding IIRC?

Haven't played any necrons but have heard horror stories of Tesseract Vaults and destroyer spam (or heavy destroyer I dunno)

The quantum shield seems like a PITA as well for most anti tank weapons.  I personally use lascannons and storm cannon arrays for tough targets at range

I just know the basic necron rule from my neophyte training.  Focus it down and kill it dead to prevent them standing up again.

Overkill to delete 1 unit is better than spreading it around.

I've fought them when 8th first came out quite a bit but the necron players stopped playing their armies until their codex came out after the initial rush of 8th faded away. I know the guy I'm playing isn't going to bring a cheese list since we both agreed to a fluffy non cheese game. I just have no idea what goodies they have now after their codex released.

I do remember the whole "make sure you wipe out a unit or else it comes back" rule of thumb.

Plasma is good for dealing with vehicles with Quantuum Armour as the fixed 2 Damage means QA rarely kicks in. Predator autocannon is also really good, particularly against Wraiths as the high RoF and fixed 3-damage is perfect for taking them down while the poor AP is irrelevant against their invulnerable saves. Point lascannons at non-QA vehicles, Destroyers or even tough infantry.

I normally run plenty of plasma Grey Hunters including some in transports with a power weapon or two in each squad. Necrons are worse in CC than us so don't be afraid to charge, even with basic infantry. The loss of shooting will generally hurt them. Just watch out for their counter-charge units like C'tan, Lychguard and Praetorians.

If you dabble with Primaris then Hellblasters are usually a good choice. Necrons have little capacity to dispel Psychic powers so bring Njal to wail on them a bit.

Necrons have better than average AP on most of their guns so bring Storm Shields on those units that can carry them.

I frequently go against a necron force and plasma takes care of most of their vehicles so a few plasma cannons are a must.

For anything a bit heavier is go with an 8 man wulfen squad with max hammers / shields with the wolf priest support...Just be careful they have a stratagem that negates your invuln saves for one fight phase...other than that it depends on their dynastic code

Don't like to keep spouting my Twin Assault Cannon fetish, but seriously, those are far more likely to kill Ghost Arks than Lascannon, as the Arks are only T6.

Anyway, just beware their dynasty tactics, but keep target priority to: (most important is 1st)

1) Ghost Arks

2) Wraiths (remember that they need a strategem to reanimate)

3) Crypteks (if you can assassinate them)

And when you are targetting units, make sure you wipe them out, even if there is just one guy standing and you have a twin assault cannon left. With their high leadership, they rarely run and if one is still standing, then the rest of the unit you killed MAY come back.

I play Necrons, a lot of what has been said is pretty good. Focus down units, it will take a lot to shift a single unit, but keep at it. I have had a single warrior squad in cover take turn after turn of Lemen Russ Punisher fire and keep getting up to do it again the next turn.

Destroyers are really good in the codex, they put out a lot of fire, are tough and are nice and mobile (for Necrons), so try and shut them down in combat if you can. If you have TWC, they will catch them and eat through a unit of Destroyers.

Wraiths are again tough and moblie with some good capabilities in combat. Weight of fire will see them gone though, and no reanimation without using a 2cp stratagem.

Also take some cheap chaff units. There are some nasty alpha strike things you can do with certain characters, they bring a unit of infantry (usually Lychguard with warscythes) to within 3" of the enemy ready for an easy turn one charge.

And watch out for C'Tan, they hand out moral wounds like they are sweets.

List looks good but I would maybe switch the venerable for Hellblasters. He is super slow for a melee dreadnought and quantum shielding now works in melee too so his D6 damage could be negated against the stuff you normally toss him against. You can at least use On The Hunt with the Hellblasters to protect them and place them in good range for rapid fire on Turn 2.

You can use long fangs instead of hellblasters for similar effect.

Regular plasma on pack leader and combi plasma on wolf guard dont suffer penalty for outflank move and can overcharge ASAP.

Plasma cannons are riskier and should be normal fired.

Pick off a small unit the turn you arrive then blast away with overcharge and 36" range and force opponent to deal with you

A storm shield insurance policy is available from your friends at the aett

Personally I would recommend to switch out Ulrik for a regular Wolf Priest and add Combiplasma to the Grey Hunters for those extra shots. Use the Ven Dread against the Wraiths or if you have see if you can fit TWC if he has Destroyers, as that extra Toughness will assist in charging them. Also if the idea is to charge at them, maybe use a Rune Priest on Bike instead of Njal. That guy has done good work for me as he will keep up better with the transports or other fast units, and you will probably be using Storm Caller and Smite anyways, so better to have him.from.turn 1 buffing everything, I'd say. The target priority given is good, and remember to not underestimate Sacarabs, they can go and explode of your face for a command point. Tie them up as much as you can and you will be good, but careful with Mephrit their extra AP will make saves harder on most of that list.

I like to sing the chorus of Let it Go whenever I cast Stormcaller with my Rune Priest on Bike. Doesn't work all the time, but when it does, after weathering Lascannon shots which should have destroyed my unit, I can smugly finish the dice roll with "The cold never bothered me anyway."

OK, I see you all aiming your lascannons at me, time for curtain call. :P

Seriously though, I think the only real way to deal with Wraiths is smite, as the damn thing is too tough and killy for its points. Thunderwolves aren't going to cut it if they don't make the charge, no way they are tough enough even with stormshields to take the brunt of Wraith's large number of attacks and 2 damage whips.

When it comes to 3++ saves massed fire power is what brings it down. It's what brings down TWC and it works on wraiths too. As many twin assault cannons as you can muster, and chuck buckets of dice at them. Same with all the Necron vehicles with quantum shielding, they ignore high damage weapons, but will go down to massed assault cannons.

Smite and Preds are good options against Wraiths. I would put a Word for Wulfen with TH/SS and buffs, especially a Wolf Priest and WGBL. They wound on 2s and everytime they kill a wraith. Also of a Wraith maanages to kill one, they will attack again. Better rate of attacks than the Pred and more reliable than Smite. A squad of 5 with Priest and WGBL will kill in average between 2 or 3 wraiths a way to kill quickly a unit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Necrons have no psykers and have nothing to stop psykers? If they have no pyskers, I don't see the point in bringing one. I only bring them in SW lists to deny the witch.

They can deny with a few units and a warlord trait, but they have no true psykers. C'Tan are like unblockable psykers though, nothing you can do about them though other than try and kill them.

Actually, I find both the spells that provides cover and -1 to hit to a target unit to be very useful, even vs necrons. Although, if I do bring a psyker, it is always Njal, and often in TDA so I can DS him in on round 2 where I need him most.

Actually my logic is the other way round: meaning if my opponent has more psykers than me, I don't bother with Rune Priests, as they are just too weak in psychic defence and offence. With Necrons, i can safely cast my powers and for once, the necrons have little to no counter to my spells. Even if they deny smite, we will still have one more spell to cast. Problem is ONLY one more spell.

As mentioned, if nothing else, the -1 to hit Tempest storm and Stormcaller Cover save are good spells, in addition to the usual Smite whichis best used against high invuln and toughness Wraiths.

For my lists, the +1 to cover save is worthless since Njal is always with the Wulfen to deny Death Hex or whatever else to the Wulfen. The +1 cover save doesn't apply to invuln saves which makes it worthless to protect the most vital unit in my list. The -1 to hit is nice but it only applies to one unit.

@ Bulwyf, I'm very pleased to announce a victory against the Crons. Granted, the game somewhat favored me in the sense that it was Ascension and I had 4 relatively fast characters on the board, which superceded the obsec of Troops, but I can say I outsmarted my opponent and played to my utmost strengths i the end while denying his strength. Granted my list is more shooty than yours, so I hope you can view the tactical lessons instead.

Also my opponent graciously allowed me to use the generic Space Marine Strategems. This may have tipped the game in my favor, but I think I'm long overdue strategems, so i take no shame in using the Marine strategems. Especially when there were only 2 I found useful in the end.

Opponent List

Battalion - Mephrit Dynasty, additional -1 AP for units within 12 inches I think)

Overlord with warscythe (veil of darkness)

Cryptek

Destroyer Lord

2 blobs of 20 Warriors

1 blob of 15-20 Immortals, can't quite remember, definitely more than 10 with Tesla. God damn, there was a lot of exploding 6s.

3 Tomb Blades

6 Canoptek Wraiths

2 Ghost Arks

6 Destroyers + 1 Heavy Destroyer

My list:

Battalion

Bjorn the Fell handed

Rune Priest with Sword and Storm bolter

Wolf guard battle leader with Storm shield and Thunderhammer

3 X 6 man Grey Hunter teams with plasma and combi plasma

2 X Razorbacks with Assault Cannon and storm bolter

2 X Razorbacks with Twin Heavy Bolter

Stormwolf with twin heavy bolters

Spearhead detachment:

1 Wolf Guard battle leader with chain sword and storm bolter

2 X 6 man Long Fangs with 1 Lascannon, 1 Missile Launcher and 1 Plasma Cannon

1 X 6 man Long Fangs with 1 lascannon, 1 Plasma Cannon and 1 Heavy bolter

I won't go into a six turn battle report unless you want me to, but this is how I managed to win:

1) Kill the Destroyers first, and any other thing that has high Strength and AP. They are the only ones with the ability to inflict multiple wounds at good AP from range. Use Hellfire and Flakk Missile to deal as much damage withoutgiving them saves.

2) Neutralise the wraiths. Again use Flakk and Hellfire, but Twin Assault Cannon also helps, which you have in ample supply. Since you have Wulfen though, i think you have covered yourself against Wraiths. But still, Twin Assault Cannon as well as the Rune Priest Smite will help diminish the threat.

3) Use Stormwolf to zoom behind enemy lines and try target/assassinate his lord or Cryptek. I was very lucky he didn't notice his backside was exposed, and I was quite surprised to find a sizeable space left behind both his Lord and Cryptek, so I was able to zoom and target both with extreme prejudice.

Note though, Overlords have strategem to resurrect with full health, but also need to roll 4+ in addition to CP cost. Which my friend failed fortunately for me. Also I outflanked a plasma hunter squad which I needed to finish off the Cryptek, therefore denying support of his 2 critical characters

So base on my experience, i need to revise my earlier advice. Before, I advised targeting Ghost Arks first, then Wraiths then characters. Now I'm changing 1st priority to Necron Heavy weapons, which are actually shorter in range for the most part, therefore marines can actually outrange them. Of course they have quantum shielding, but thankfully nearly all their gun platforms have fly therefore Flakk missile can affect them. Then Wraiths. Then Characters.

Actually the Ghost Arks and Characters probably fill same target priority. But I think in the end, killing the Overlord was essential to prevent My Will be done, which with a strategem, can potentially give 2 units with +1 to hit, advance and charge.

Hope this helps.

You were right, the +1 save was most useless. Cursing with Tempest Wrath would have been more useful. Jaws has potential but unless you use Njal, still not much more potential than smite. Better to multiple smite than Jaws.

Created with BattleScribe

This was agreed before hand to be a friendly game so no ITC lists. I brought the Whirlwind more as a laugh but it did get me one extra CP. I had 10 CP. We played my favorite mission in the game in Dominate and Destroy. I sat the WW all game on one of my back objectives.

His army was solid. He had two Doomsday Arks that were absolutely bonkers with the damage they could do. He had two objectives in his deployment zone and he sat one of them on each objective. He had some kind of spider looking vehicle that gave his army Tau markerlight abilities. I don't know the name.

He had two squads of 4 man Wraiths, one squad of some kind of Necron biker gang. Tomb Guard? Something like that.  He had a Necron lord for HQ, two characters with one of them with a resurrection orb. He had two squads of immortals and one of warriors. All of them were huge squads.

Turn 1: He got to shoot first. He show those Doomsday Arks into my LRC. I had no idea how strong those things were before the game. He almost one shot my LRC on first turn since the -5 AP meant I had no saves against them. He moved both squads of Wraiths directly in front of my lines. LRC on one side of a cathedral type building and another squad directly in front of all 3 Razorbacks. He had 4 objectives and was up 4-0.

Turn 1 (my go): For almost the first time I remember in 8th I had to disembark everything in my zone. No, scratch that, it was the first time. I put the all 3 GH squads in front of my RB and the Wulfen with Njal and Ulric popped out the LRC with a direct line to the Wraiths in front of it. Njal threw up the cover saves and smited the Wraiths. Super smite! Killed one Wraith.  My shooting was directed at the 20 man warrior squad and the Wraiths. I killed all but one Necron warrior in shooting. I plinked off only a few wounds on one of the Doomsday Arks in the back.

I charge into the Wraiths. Wulfen were champs. I slaughtered all three Wraiths despite his rolling well on saves. First blood to me. On the other side of the cathedral my GH and Bjorn hit his Wraith squad there. I simply could not kill all of them because of his 3++ rolling.

End of Turn 1: Necrons 4 SW 5 (I held three objectives, killed a unit for one point and first blood for another)

Turn 2 (his go): The two Arks finish off my LRC. It did not explode. They wound the Predator and one RB. Still on top tier for both. He brings back 14 out of the 19 warriors I killed. My jaw must have hit the floor. He uses his army special rule for his dynasty to advance and turn all his weapons into assault weapons. He does some strategies to help him, that's how he got more warriors back and used something on his Arks for quantum shielding. He teleports his warlord with one block of immortals to be about 10 inches or so from my Wulfen death bomb on my right flank. He turns his Tomb Guard bikers around a building and has my Wulfen bomb in the crossfire.  He advances both troops closer to my lines. The Arks never move all game and the spider looking vehicle stays perched on top of ruins all game as well. He could not revive any Wraiths all game.

His shooting from vehicles was deadly but his troops only managed one wound on my vehicles. He uses two troops, two characters including warlord and the biker gang to shoot the Wulfen bomb. Incredibly only one wound gets through. I should say at this point my save rolls were ungodly all game. My shooting rolls were also ungodly but for the wrong reasons.

His Wraiths tied up with my GH/Bjorn kill only two GH. The 3++ was telling. I fight back and finish off the one wounded Wraith leaving him with three.

Turn 2 (my go) I unleash a hell storm into the Necron warriors behind the Wraith squad tied up in combat. This time around I am able to wipe the squad. Kill unit point for me. True Grit for one of my GH squads lets them tick off a wound or two on the Wraiths.  The Predator and WW focus on the Ark behind that action. We put some  wounds on it but it is in good shape. Wulfen can't shoot, Njal with smite kills one Tomb Guard biker. In the shooting for my right flank nothing is killed.

I had moved only my Wulfen death bomb this turn. I had a tough choice. I thought his bikers would wipe out my WW as it was sitting by itself unprotected on an objective. On my other side was the Immortals, one character I never found what it was, and his Warlord. If I had to do it over again I would have went for that. But since I didn't know if Tomb Guard bikes are like space marine/chaos marine bikers that cna do something in CC I opted for them. Wulfen death bomb goes into the Tomb Guard. I heal the one wound on the Wulfen, Overwatch put that wound back.

My charge/fight phase was killer. Literally.  Bjorn/GH finish off the Wraith squad they were in CC with. The Wulfen death bomb kills off the Tomb Guard.

End of Turn 2 points: Necrons 6 SW: 11 (5 previous turn, 3 objectives held + 3 units killed)

Turn 3: He shoots into what he can see with the Arks. My Predators and two RB are almost destroyed, down to the last tier for all of them. In retrospect looking back I think that might have decided the game had he actually finished them. He moves one Immortal troop with his Warlord and character close to the one objective on that side but not close enough to claim it. My guess is that with how my Wulfen were deployed he wanted to make the charge hard for them. He starts to shoot the Wulfen with that squad until I point out (I'm a nice guy and this is a friendly game after all) that I goofed in exposing Njal to him. Njal was the closest to that squad. He then thanks for me pointing that out and proceeds to put about a bucket of shots into Njal. I

Russ and the Allfather was with Njal this day. His 4++ was incredible. Only one wound got through. My friend and I just started laughing about the saves at that point. I can't remember how many shots he put into Njal but it was unreal. His other Immortal squad tried to shoot into him as well but I pointed out that Wulfen were closer to that squad and he could only shoot them. He did...and nothing got through. 3++ was with the Wulfen.

He did not enter into combat (I don't blame him) and his half of Turn 3 came to close with lots of laughs about my luckier than hell saves.

Turn 3(my turn)

I move the GH/Bjorn forwards as well as the 3 RBs. Predator and WW stayed the same. I know he had one character exposed but I wanted to kill that freaking Doomdsay Ark! All  of my shooting except plasma guns went into one of his Arks. The plasma guns on the GH squad finish off his character with the orb that was with the now dead 20 man warrior squad. It took literally all of my shooting to do it but I finally kill off the Ark. Praise be to Russ! His other Ark now had no LOS to my vehicles.

On the other side of the table I decided to try out Jaws of the World Wolf on the Immortals. I know, I know..it is usually useless. But a 5 inch movement means I had  chance of doing some damage. And it worked like a champ! I rolled 9 on the 2D6 and he loses 4 models. I keep up the cover psychic power. In retrospect I should have either used smite or the negative to hit on his Ark or the other Immortal squad. Oh well.

My Wulfen with one wound is healed. And once again in overwatch I only take one wound on the same Wulfen. He probably is very angry with me.

The Wulfen death bomb could wrap around enough to multicharge into the troops and warlord. Njal and Ulrik keep up like the bosses they are. Between the Wulfen and the characters we wipe out the the Immortals and the Warlord. My friend, knowing that was the game in hand, activated his remaining character against the Wulfen but failed to bring one down.

End of turn 3 and end of game: Necrons 7 SW 19 (11 previous, 3 objectives + 4 units killed + Slay the Warlord)

My friend took a good look at the table. The only remaining units on his side was a slightly damaged Doomsday Ark, the spider looking vehicle on the other side all alone staring down most of my army, one character exposed to Wulfen and one squad of Immortals. I had only one unit loss, incredibly, the LRC and only two Grey Hunters all game.

Handshakes were extended and the game was over. We had a good laugh and a great game. Praise be to Russ and the Allfather for some of the most incredible saves I have ever pulled off in any game. The only reason this game might look more one sided than it actually was is because of my luck. Insane.
