Looking at Ynnari, would like some advice

Greetings All.

I'm a Death Guard and Necron player and have been looking at starting an Eldar army for sometime but want to use the Ynnari as I've fallen in love with the models. Plus I've had on my painting shelf harlequins and FW shadow spectres with the Phoenix Lord, ( I love the background of them and the Mymeara Craftworld)

So I'm looking at advice on starting a Ynnari army and what models to start with and what models for later to get.

Cheers

So... Ynnari can pull from all 3 aeldari factions. Since you mentioned 2 craftworld units and harlequins, I'm guessing that's the direction you're thinking.

Is this accurate? And how competitive are you trying to be? We can go anywhere from beerhammer to tournament winner here.

I'd like to use my harlequins and shadow spectres and I've got the dark Eldar codex and really enjoyed them and would love to use them. It won't be for tournaments, just a fun army to play

Like Orpheus108 I am also looking at starting an elder army and love the Ynnari models. Are there any other units that can be taken in a Ynnari army or will I have to take separated determents altogether if I want Ynnari in my army? sorry for the rather noob question I'm just not vey keen to buy the codex without having a little info first

An Ynnari army is just one of the three heroes in the triumvirate plus whatever flavor of Craftworld, Drukhari, or harlequin detachment you like. Throw in the strength from death rule and the three psychic powers and you have the army.

As was said above, however, be sure to read all the relevant FAQs, as a LOT has changed since their index rules release, including how you assemble and utilize the detachments.

They’re definitely not as powerful as they were at release, but they do provide a way to use a triple Eldar army in a thematic way. They could really use a dedicated codex to flesh out all these changes and streamline the units they can actually use.

The big FAQ, and more gradually the previous FAQs, pretty much ruined Ynnari. Basicly in exchange for giving up your factionwide main special rule(s) AND your subfaction special rules, you get a heavily neutered Strength from Death that now only works on your turn and you can only use each type of soulburst once.

It is worth noting, however, that the current rules allow you to give the named Ynnari characters warlord traits from the Craftworld, Drukhari, or Harlequin Codexes. This is probably on accident though, and will likely be fixed before the neutering of the Ynnari.

I think the "no Ynnari soup" decision was hasty considering the decision was made based off of games where 2/3 of the Eldar factions didn't have a Codex and as a result, there was no reason not to soup. If you are giving up not just your main army rule but also your subfaction rule, soup + strength from death (neutered) seems like a fair deal.

I hope you make something good out of Ynnari, I enjoy seeing people make a go out of ideas that people think would be problematic, but you have your work cut out for you. Maybe just maybe we will get a Ynnari Codex eventually.

Heck, the no Ynnari soup thing goes against the very fluff they've written about them.

I'm really expecting some sort of weirdness when they get a Codex.  Possibly all unique units and no more of the mixing stuff.

The Ynnari as a faction really interest me. I really like the fact that they're comprised of all factions of Eldar. I've been actually kicking around building a Dark Eldar corsair themed force to ally with any future Ynnari releases. I've always had a soft spot for the filthy, pirate xenos scum, with the exception of the Craftworlders. Screw those knife-eared goody two-shoes.
