Tyrant's Call Adeptus Astartes Challenge

Recommended Posts

med_gallery_26_548_209736.png

Members of the B&C are challenged with the modelling and painting a power armoured kill team of Adeptus Astartes from select Chapters that participated in the Badab War.

The purpose of this challenge is to find imagery suitable to decorate the finished Shadow War: Badab rules that will be published here at the B&C for download. The winning squad will be featured at the bottom of page 9. And the member submitting the winning squad will also receive some other small prizes to be announced later.

Below are images showing the Chapters that participated in the campaign. The image on the left shows the color schemes as depicted in the original Badab War Index Astartes article from Warhammer 40,000 1st Edition ("Rogue Trader"). The image on the right shows the revised schemes, as depicted in the Forge World Badab War books. Click on each image for a larger version:

Astral Claws
Carcharadons
Executioners
Exorcists
Fire Angels
Fire Hawks
Howling Griffons
Lamenters
Mantis Warriors
Marines Errant
Minotaurs
Novamarines
Raptors
Red Scorpions
Salamanders *
Sons of Medusa
Star Phantoms
Tiger Claws

* The First Founding Chapters aren't eligible because we want to focus on other Chapters.

What to Submit: One image of your power armoured (legacy) Adeptus Astartes kill team, created per these rules (and these rules) and representing one of the eligible Chapters shown above. Your kill team may include up to 1 special operative (but doesn't have to include one, if you don't want). No Primaris Marines! The Badab War took place before the Primaris Marines came into play, so we're looking for legacy Space Marine models.

Members may submit as many kill teams as they want, but may only submit one (1) image in jpg format of each kill team. The image should be at least 800 pixels across, and should be cropped to minimize wasted space. No backgrounds or terrain are necessary - a different image of the winning kill team will be used in the rules and that will be taken later. You can find tutorials on photographing your miniatures here.

E-mail your submissions to @Brother Tyler at sml_gallery_26_548_3422.png. Include your display name in the e-mail. Pictures of entries should not be posted or saved here at the B&C (e.g., in your galleries or in topics, whether within the Forge or your faction-specific forum). Once the members have voted for their favorite, then you can post WIPs and what-not to show everyone how you did it and how it came out.

Deadline to enter: Midnight 29 July 2018. Basically, as long as it is in my e-mail inbox when I log in first thing on Monday 30 July, it will be allowed.

The members will vote for their favorite and I'll contact the winning member so that we can discuss the composition of the image that will be used in the finished rules (and it will include either terrain or a plain background, so keep that in mind).

In addition to the winning kill team, one or two other miniatures from among those entered will also be included in the finished rules. Selection of these models will be my prerogative, based on variety (i.e., the additional miniature(s) will differ from the winning kill team in terms of colors and lineage, along with whatever I find aesthetically pleasing). I'll also contact the creators of images for the additional Chapter(s) that will be used so that we can discuss final image composition.

If you have any questions, post them here.

What's this?  A Badab War painting challenge you say?  I am just finishing off an Astral Claws Battle Company.....

They are nowhere near as good as some on this site.  I shall have a go.

For the Tyrant!

Could you maybe give a quick summary for exactly how a kill team should be formed by those rules? I'm not up on the system but an tiring of painting blue and think Lamenters could be a fun break. 3-7 models by what it says?

1,000 points max

1 Leader (mandatory)

0-2 Specialists

0+ Troopers

Up to 1/2 of your kill team may be New Recruits (only applies to Tyrant's Legion and Space Marine Scout kill teams)

If you take a power armoured Adeptus Astartes kill team, your kill team must be 3-7 models.

If you take a Space Marine Scout kill team, your kill team must be 3-10 models.

If you take a Tyrant's Legion kill team, your kill team must be 3-10 models.

Since we're at the 1,000 point beginning kill team, the max kill team size probably doesn't apply (and you may also take an optional special operative that doesn't count against your points value - he's just for show).

Aaaargh. By July! That's just three weeks time ?! For three plus minis...I hardly churn that amount out in the CoC over three months! You monsters!

Should spent less time on the Internet and more on painting miniatures, I guess...

No. We don't want people voting for/against any models based on the owners.

Why are the Salamanders not up there :sad.: I just painted a Test model for my Badab Salamander and it looks epic!

(Answered in Homegrown Rules discussion, too)

The Salamanders will be included in a later challenge.

I'm considering extending the challenge by 2-4 weeks. I didn't realize how busy the summers are. My kids have been going to camps and events constantly since school ended, so I'm assuming that lots of people are much busier than I'd expected.

How many people would be able to participate if the deadline was extended to either the middle or end of July?

I was hoping to get two teams submitted, but I've been so busy that I doubt if I'll even get one done by the current deadline. Extending the deadline by two weeks would be nice, but four weeks would be great.

An extension would be great for me as well. I'm tackling these as change-of-pace painting projects, and a couple I painted already may not be valid it turns out, so more time would be nice.

Well this extension has certainly given me more time after I built the last member today and base sprayed them. :D More time to learn some new techniques methinks and not have to worry about taking time away from ETL

Aaaargh!!! I screwed up both of the kill teams I was working on (no time to explain how, suffice to say it was a dumb mistake and I should have known better). :blush.:

I don't have time to assemble new miniatures. However, I have some old Space Marine models on 25mm bases that I can turn into a suitable kill team. Is that okay? Later on I'll be able to adjust their bases to 32mm, but I doubt that I'll be able to get that accomplished by the deadline.
