GT Tournament Report

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.  Full video report will be up on the CanHammer channel probably wednesday.

Attended a 64 person GT this weekend, run by Basement Collective in Sudbury.  ITC format, all beta rules, etc.etc.

My list:

Commander - kurovs and grand strategist

primaris psyker

infantry + mortar x3

Captain on bike

captain on bike

3x5 bikers

vexilla (-1 to hit)

1st round - triple tesseract vault

My most dreaded matchup, and i got it round 1.  oh well.  not much you can do when you take 20 mortal wounds in a single movement phase and your characters get 1-shotted by time's arrow.  I did manage to take out 2 vaults by turn 2, but with third fully functioning vault and a C'tan as well, and dwindling bikers, it was game over.

2nd round - dark angels

Opponents list:

azrael

talonmaster

banner

2 hellblaster squads

3 dev squads (combo hvy bolter, lascannon, missile launcher)

3 scouts

3 custodes captains

Used a central LOS terrain piece to negate his shooting. He made mistake of charging a custodes captain into my guardsmen, allowing me to stooping dive and kill it and slingshot me into his line. had to dance around the banner a little bit, but otherwise got me whole army into his gunline and game was over.  Of note, 118 bolter shots does NOT kill a custodes captain lol

3rd round - nurgle

opponents list:

mortarion

great unclean one

bilepiper

some festering plate character that reflects mortal wounds

30 plaguebearers

3 small cultist units

2 bloat drones with the str 6 gun

mephitic blighthauler

nurglings

Tough matchup always against nurgle. Very tough, invulns everywhere, and 5+ FNP make them very hard to kill.  I almost killed mortarion turn 1, got him down to 1 wound and couldn't finish him. He proceeded to wipe a captain and a whole unit of bikes, then died turn 2.  Lost a few more to smites and great unclean one before deciding better part of valour was to use his plaguebeares as a shield and run away from GUO.  Managed to play smart and squeaked out a win by 3 points on turn 6 by finally managing to kill the plaguebearer unit.  great game, super tight

4th round - admech

opponents list:

cawl

engineseers

dominus

6 chicken walkers

6 robots

19 electropriests

This was an auto-loss for my opponent. We played on a table with a massive cathedral in the middle, with table quarters deployment. Literally his robots could not shoot anything, i just flew in there turn 1 and consolidated into them and they were done.  Electropriests failed 6" charge, lost 6 to overwatch, and hurricanes finished them next turn.  6 chicken walkers got stooping dived, losing half of them, then killed 1 biker, finished them off next turn.  Easy game, big win. Terrain screwed him.

5th round - thousand sons

Opponents list:

ahriman

change caster x2

3 demon princes (2 tzeentch 1 khorne)

unit of bezerkers in rhino

pink horror bomb

2 small cultist units, 1 big one

3 oblits (slaanesh)

a contemptor with C-beam

Always a tough matchup for custodes.  Unlimited smite with extra 6" range is really tough.  Pink horror bomb literally does nothing to custodes.  I made cardinal rookie mistake of splitting my bikes off to kill cultists and nurglings (which was bad move) and overextended one unit....game over for me.  Stupid loss, could have won that game

overall finished 3-2, 16 overall.  Which is fine. But very disappointed with my performance in the last game, coulda pulled out a small victory and finish way higher at 4-1.  Super awesome tournament though, great opponents.

List changes:

Need more bodies, more space denial, and more psychic defense.  I think i can accomplish all that by dropping a biker, the vexilla (which was basically useless the whole weekend), and take conscripts.

valhallan

commander - kurovs, strategist

commander - pietrovs pistol

89 conscripts (basically immune to morale)

captain

captain

bikers (5, 5, 4)

Takes up so much space, pushes back attackers, sets up stooping dives, eats smites and other psychic shenanigans, hold objectives, obnoxious to kill, all with just losing 1 biker in offense.  Gonna try this out

Sorry you had a rough outing.

Ironically I just came off a local ITC GT as well, and did pretty well but I could not take my Custodes. They're such a fickle match up. I love them, but I just despise IG Parking Lot match up and it's everywhere here. (but I see you never came across it.)

Thanks for your update!

Another reason for me to never enter competitive play lol! Friendly games for life!

Thanks for the reporting btw! Hope you had a decent time. It is never fun to lose but losing is the best way to learn.

I am surprised that the Dark Angel's player never took a Librarian with Null zone over the talon master, because that's what he needed and you would have had a much much harder game, as he could use his captains and scouts to stall you and shoot you to death or counter strike.

It’s a great time. People are always under impression that just because people are competing that somehow it’s not a fun time. Quite the opposite

Anyway null zone. Yea. Problem with that is it’s an aura around the librarian and if he’s that close he’s gonna bite it. And again issue was he couldn’t see me and with 14” fly I can usually maneuver to make the first strike

The thing with Null Zone (I find anyway) is I cast it knowing there is a high price to pay, but the trade off can be immense.

The GT I just came ofor became.... increasingly unpleasant the more I won. I have to be careful what I say but there are definitely some people who put a high importance on the results. I’m glad you seemingly avoided those and had a good time. :tu:

Yes, but if he and the hellblasters are adaquetately protected by a sufficient number of speed bumps. It freaking hurts like hell. I've experienced it once and during a time, when I forget that a Librarian was nearby. It was not fun to be reminded of that to say the least. XD

The guy had more than enough units to tie your bikes down for about 1-2 turns. He just needed to play defensively, but it sounds like he didn't.
