Hellforged Spartan

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering has anyone had any luck fielding a Hellforged Spartan in 8th edition? I have one which basically has been gathering dust for the last few years which I would be quite keen on trying to use again. With the massive transport capacity plus the quad lascannons throwing out 8 lascannon shots a turn all of which now no longer suffer the penalty to hit from moving with the FAQ it seems like the slerfect tank to include in my DG force to add some much needed heavy power which has been lacking. Has anyone used them before and how did they go, even with their massive points cost are they actually worth fielding or end up being easily dealt with

I use mine in just about every game. I play World Eaters and use it to get a lot of berzerkers and Khârn across the table and into striking distance. The number of wounds it has makes it really resilient and it is perfect for armies that rely heavily on assault units (World Eaters) because it ensures they survive. That said, mine rarely kills anything substantial despite its 8 lascannons (I am notorious for unlucky dice rolls in my gaming). I have only played one game since the FAQ that got rid of the penalty to hit, and it performed better in the shooting phase than in previous games.

Also, the Spartan is a FIRE MAGNET. When my opponent sees that thing on the board they usually focus on it for the majority of their shooting phase. You definitely need to take something else that forces your opponent to make tough decisions in the shooting phase. I usually run a laspred, a couple of additional transports (rhinos), or a leviathan. I have heard of several people taking vindicator laser destroyers as well.

Despite the drawbacks, mine has served me very well and it always make for a fun game. Interestingly, the people at my lgs seem to enjoy playing against a horde of berzerkers jumping out of a Spartan.

I have no experience with Death Guard, but I suspect it could be just as useful for your army.

Hope this helps.
