Hi!

Im curious to get myself a deathwatch ally det. I manly play custodes and some guard when playing the Imperium. Model wise, i just like the Primaris stuff...so..is it viable?

How do you build your teams for different purposes? (Backfield, aggressive, horde, tank killers etc) ... with only the Primaris range

What Hq's do you use? Deathwatch flyer any good?

Cheers everyone!

It's very viable. I have only Primaris marines and they work pretty well when combined with Hellblasters, Aggressors and Inceptors. I'm still working on an optimal composition, but lately I've used 2 units of 6 intercessors, 3 hellblasters and 1 plasma Inceptor and 1 unit with 5 intercessors, 4 agressors and 1 bolter Inceptor. The last unit pumps out an insane amount of dakka. The plasma units are very strong as well. They damage tanks and heavy infantry alike.

You do need to try to get some extra AT units. Preferably Ven dreads with lascannons if you want to stay away from FW units.

I've used 2 bats, one with the units above, a Watch Master and Librarian. The second one with 3 units of 5 basic intercessors and 2 Watch Captains.

You get a lot of CP for +1 wound strats and mortal wound strategems. It might not be the best for tourneys, but you'll damage a lot. I've tabled a space marine force, but I've lost against Knights. It did well against Necrons (though I lost that game on objectives, but not necessarily because I got outshot or anything). I've always put the Plasma units in the Teleportarium with a Watch Captain/master. That hurts when placed in the sweet spot of 12-15 inches. I've also had an opponent who charged my dakka unit supported by a Watch Master. It didn't end well for him even though you just hit on a 6 with overwatch.

Not sure if you really want to go all the way with the characters, but I use primaris models for regular captain units simply because they are a bit more flexible and make for funner characters to use (jump packs, termy armour etc.). I've got some nice conversions lined up from Inceptors with Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammers and all. It's probably just a matter of time before Primaris can do that...I hope. However, you can go all primaris characters if you like. it's not that big of a difference.

I've never used the Corvus, its rules seem not all that strong though. As a gunship it's pretty weak. Hits on 4+ and it can't carry Primaris marines. Better use Ven dreads for AT or a Repulsor or 2.

Hope that gives some insight.

Short answer for me, I'd agree with most of Sloeberjong's advice.  Essentially, DW are actually better as a hard-hitting ally than a main list, so splashing them in is a fine idea.  As for what to take, Watch Masters are easily the best HQ choice available, though I'd avoid the Corvus since you can just use Teleportarium to bring your Kill Teams in (on the cheap) and there are far better Flyers out there for the cost.

Thanks man!!

To Clarify, so a normal Captain for that reroll of 1's to hit....and a watch master?..then 3x Troops for that sweet Batalion?...I think I can mix that in nicely!

On another note, is it completley wrong fluff-wise for Custodes and DW to join forces?

Cheers

Ok! Nice...

If I were to use 500p or 750p - ish points as allies...how would you spend then points? I understand that it Depends on what i have in the list but just as a General "al-comer" allied det?

Thanks!!

I'd recommend just double up on watchmasters unless you need a jump pack character, as watchmasters will reroll far more misses that a captain will, and they have solid gear.

That depends - how competitive is your local gaming group? Is this list you're planning focusing on being ultra competitive, or are you looking for some fluffy options?

Well...I would like to hear the competitive options. If I want to take it down a notch i just need to remove some models and so on...so...how would you do it?

And yeah..a Batalion det to use with other imperial forces such as guard and Custodes

Your general intercessors is pretty handy with SIA so 300 in troops 1 watchmaker at 130 + 100 for a jump pack captain or Librarian to beef it up I'd add power swords to the sgt's and add a couple of Hellblaster's to each squad.

Reasons - No one in thier right mind would assault you if your backed up with custodes and the 3 squads would have enough range and would be able to support in the mid board area adding aggressors or inceptors would probably see them not fire a lot of the time. You've enough firepower and models in each squad to keep in contact with a watchmaker for rerolls and the Tome of Ectocldes for support switching.

I think the biggest issue this combo brings is vehicles. I've never combined my Deathwatch with my Custodes, but in both cases heavy vehicle/monster armies are an issue.

I am seriously considering a Castellan or Valiant for attempting a competitive Ally. I love the Custodes, but there's a bit too much overlap in ability to me. Everyone defaults to bikes, which is great for speed, anti-horde and close combat but again those bikes are 'okay' against hard targets on the charge but I want certain death for Knight lists, and Astra parking lots, etc.
