Is Chronus "on the field" before his vehicle explodes?

No, he's inside the vehicle and doesn't count as being on the field.

I'd disagree with that interpretation.

"A single ULTRAMARINES...  ...in your army can take Sergeant Chronus as an upgrade."

Chronus is explicitly listed as being an upgrade to a vehicle.  In all other contexts of upgrades they are present ON the unit at all times.

It is only when the vehicle is reduced to 0 wounds that Chronus is placed using the emergency disembarkation rules, but he's never a true passenger.

The rules say he is inside the tank. Rules for models embarked indicate he isn't counted as being on the table.

Where in his rules does it say Chronus is a passenger in the tank and not part of the tank itself?

The only time the passenger rules come into play is when placing Chonus after his vehicle is destroyed.

No matter what you say, still voting no.

Sure, there’s probably a case to be made if you really want it.

But chronus is not an upgrade, he’s the driver/gunner. That’s why he can get out when the tank blows up instead of blowing up with the tank.

This kind of wishfull rules interpretation bothers me personally.

If you want to use you interpretation, go for it.

But as in this post, be prepared for heavy resistance during a game.

But usually, an embarked model can’t use any abilities - once in a rhino, a captain’s aura doesn’t work, and a librarian can’t use his powers.

Chronus doesn’t follow that rule, as his ability remains in play. In that sense at least, you could argue that he must be ‘on the table’ because he can still affect the game.

I wasn’t really thinking about the warlord side of things, and any associated traits. Just whether he was ‘on the table’. And his BS2+ thing being active suggests that he is.

Just looked at the rules again. They state you use the vehicle profile with the exception of the ballistic skill.

That means the vehicle is not a character and doesn't have a Warlord trait.

I've never gotten any resistance using Chronus as my warlord.

Chronus benefitting from his warlord trait when commanding his tank is hardly gamebreaking.  He's losing all the benefits of being a character.

You call my interpretation wishful thinking, but you're the one making up rules.

That's not the case. A tank isn't a character and cannot be given a Warlord trait.

Chronus can, but if he's not in active play then he can't use it. Whilst he's in a tank he isn't on the field.

I'm gonna go with no as well. His rules say you use the abilities and keywords of the vehicle. The vehicle does not get the Sgt Cronus keyword, so it wouldn't count as Sgt Cronus. It also says when it is destroyed to set up him as a model disembarking from a destroyed transport, which implies that he is embarked on the vehicle and wouldn't be on the table.

Yeah, after reading it for the 100th time it seems pretty clear cut. He can't use anything to do with his profile eg being a character etc until he's on foot. I've replaced him with a chaplain dread in my list. Thanks guys, I thought this is how it'd work but I wanted to make sure before I gave up 2 lascanons.
