Calgar as an alternative to Guilliman?

I never see Calgar in any of our competitive lists.

Is he too expensive?

Are re-rolls to hit not something we value as much as versatility?

Are his stats/rules not useful enough to take him over a generic Captain?

Try as I might, I can never seem  to fit him into a list despite his fantastic CP value and extremely durable chassis.

He's actually extremely good value for points. He needs a nice hammer to stand next too of course since giving rerolls to Tacticals is a bit underwhelming, especially when he can give rerolls to something else whilst Tacticals benefit from Scions of Guilliman.

The question is; what does he accompany? I don't like talking gunlines but there is a play go make there I guess.

Teleporting in with lots of Terminators and Vanguard might be nice though. He's a solid lump up close and with plenty of models to soak attention he is very viable.

I've used him once so far and teleported him behind the enemy with a terminator squad. They did ok, but not amazingly. I think he's probably better used as countercharge with the big guns, like other terminators he's just too slow and easy to keep at arm's length once he's down.

Two ways I used him: 1: A direct replacement to Guilliman in a mid/long range gunline, advancing and willing to slug it out if he has to (usually with an LT). This is an easy way to fill out your HQ for a Battalion and you get the CP/regen you need and without Guilliman this does open the second Battalion possibility up for you.

2: Deepstrike cannonball. A big squad of Plasma Inceptors, and/or Cataphractii and/or Reivers. The Plasma Inceptors are mandatory. With all the other stuff you're playing for varying levels of 'fun' or just anti-spam (Reivers). This cannonball can gut a vehicle, but it is more strong I found when used in conjunction with a one-two punch with something else... let's say a Flyer is eyeing up a hard target, or you are trying to get a Dread(s) through to a hard target.... This unit can clear massed Chaff pretty good.

I've used it against Chaos massed cultists (Inceptors of bolt and plasma variety) and the Inceptors counter the stuff that is chewing you up at range; Obliterators (after they've come down), Dark Reapers, Hive Guard, etc, etc.

Calgar is great. As Prot mentioned, he can easily be used as an aura buff/counter charge warlord and functions great. If you add a lieutenant you can fill the mandatory HQ slots and come away with a much cheaper Space Marine detachment. Guilliman's problem is his massive cost, as well as the fact you still need other HQs. Unfortunately following repeated cost increases as well as an escalating codex creep in other armies the Primarch is now over-priced, so Calgar is indeed worthwhile considering.

He also excels if you run him alonside 9 Inceptors with Plasma. Drop in, shoot, re-roll, delete. Inceptors are hands down the best deep-striking unit Marines now have access to.

You could also run a few units of Bolter Inceptors for thinning hordes. Don't waste points on Terminators - they lack the firepower and combat power their cost implies they should have. (Deathguard and Slaanesh Terminators are the real deal, however)

Is there any non-causal player who will pick Slaanesh Teminators over Slaanesh Obliterators?
