I'm not a person with a particularly visual imagination so I'm certainly fond of being able to put an image to an idea. Here's both a younger and a contemporary depiction of the T'au Commander who serves as my namesake, and this piece is something I had done when I was considering how I was going to approach my Adeptus Mechanicus/Ordo Reductor forces. I also have some very early concepts from a piece I was having done with some Dark Eldar characters a few years back but that never got beyond the concept stage (which I won't be posting as it's so early on that the featured individuals never received clothes), and there's this piece based on Iron Hands Fanatic's concepts (with their permission) when I was exploring my 30k Iron Warriors. He wanted a portrait for his female Imperial Knight pilot, did his own research, found a portrait of a lady he used as a reference, thought a long time about the idea, but just didn't know how to put it together. It was my great honour to be invited, because I knew how much it meant to him, I've watched him play with that character, understood his (or her i.e. that character's) tactics, AND it was quite simple. I spent 1 night (just a few hours) shooping it together: A Portrait of Lady Eliza Terryn I also made something for my own army. My favourite source of 40k lore is The Regimental Standard, the in-universe propaganda. Despite it being (or because it is) nothing but lies, it's IMHO the most immersive depiction of life in the Imperium. At the same time I was conceiving what would become my Armies On Parade category winner army, Patient Zero (and his "giggling cupids"), I made this in parallel between painting after reading The Regimental Standard and Dark Imperium: "Until you've been checked for, you can still be a vector!" I also made a poster for a Rogue Psyker army (like Forgeworld's Malefic Lords or something) that I've yet to turn into an army: It's something I've been mulling over for a while now, but I was curious to see if this was something others had done as well. I showed you the above as experience sharing, precisely to help you with this question. 1st, I didn't commission these, as I simply made these in PowerPoint, which you probably have. I do a lot of presentations in my work and 1 huge aspect of presentations is to just create a shared vision, so I applied that mentality here. I just "cut" images out with Picture Tools > Format > Remove Background, then played with them again in Picture Tools > Format > Picture Effects or Artistic Effects. I'd toy around with things for 15 minutes, find it a failure, start over and do again but faster for 15 minutes, and by the 2nd or 3rd iteration it's good enough. The most important thing was, actually working on the image helped me work through those ideas. 2nd, let's say you give it a go, maybe take a photo of your miniature and try to modify that image in PowerPoint. Try to imagine it as something that'll go into an issue of The Regimental Standard or it's just a Remembrancer's depiction like in a Horus Heresy book. It makes it easier yet seem more in-universe/immersive. It might seem daunting because you know how to paint, but not how to draw, yet you know the 40k universe well. Maybe that 40k knowledge can power you through, lean on that. You may amaze yourself on what you can achieve, and even if it's not as good as you want, you can show it to an artist like Brother Madscuzzy and that artist knows exactly what to deliver, which leads us to... 3rd, it's great you commission an artist, but just checking if it's someone you personally know? More importantly, it's someone that knows YOU and your preferences better than you can describe them, because ideas are abstract and difficult to explain. Ideally it'd be someone who knows your character and watched your games. There are things about your playstyle you can't describe because you don't even notice you're doing it, but a friend will. Conclusion - the do-it-yourself approach isn't just both the cheapest and most rewarding way, it actually also helps you flesh out your idea. I see creating as part of the creative process, so even if you outsource, you can use whatever you made as part of brainstorming. Good hunting, look forward to see what you make. That is very cool. I've been toying with the idea of making a campaign badge/symbol for my RG army. They're background is that they're on a mission of revenge to restore honor. I'll have to start playing around with ideas and turn it into a reality. I have been talking to some artists because I want a family portrait commissioned for my anniversary later this year... Upon better understanding your situation, I had the following idea and share it freely: You're taking a krak at it, which is outstanding. However, you (and I) don't do actual line art much, so it probably won't be professional-grade. As such, I'd play up the fact that it is SUPPOSED to be amateurish, so I had this idea of a Guardsman in a regiment doing a rough sketch of his comrade...because they're really bored waiting for the next battle. So I imagine a guard finding some sort of debris as a drawing surface. All he's got is his pencil he uses to fill forms with and his ration knife to sharpen it. And the only paper he's got access to is the back of the Regimental Standard Lasgun Replacement Form. I tweaked the image there to be like an Easter Egg to the viewer. The concept here is, as a former intern of mine (real clever kid) taught me, is to "trick the eye". The eye will, in turn, trick the mind. I do believe an important part of doing commissions is also being able to understand the clients wants/needs and working towards making that a reality. It is always more rewarding if they themselves are able to do it, which is why I do enjoy the teaching process just as much, if not more than doing the commission itself. The fact of life is that many people either choose not to, due to certain beliefs, confidence, uncertainties etc. or just may not enjoy the process that much that they wish to dedicate a part of their life learning an entirely new skillset. No matter the reason, it is theirs to make and in no way a judgement (I'm extremely lazy if I can get away with it... XD). Shamefully for all concepts I still have yet to paint up (and at this point, I probably need new paint lol). To start off however I have this and this from Blaz on Deviantart as a general appearance of an Angel of Vindication and this more this heroically posed Angel of Vindication by Lord of the Guns (request filled on /tg/). I then received this positively gorgeous watercolor from an anonymous poster on /tg/ who I forget the name of, if s/he even has a deviantart, but it's definite the best piece of the entire collection- a Terminator of the Angels of Vindication showing off the house heraldry on the right pauldron. I'm still stunned by its sheer quality. It reminds me of how Imperial Armor art used to look like. Moving on to characters I also have the Paladin of the Chapter Richart in Tartaros armor, the Chief Librarian Mauger, and the Chapter's founder, Robert, lamenting his fallen (biological) brother Sigifrid. Then there's the Chapter's auxiliaries - the PDF and Guard regiments of the satellite systems, the Normens (this by Rotaken) and a more primitive gritty version by L3monJuic3. Then there's the other two chapters I'm working on for the sector, the Petrified - renegade cybernetic zombie Iron Hands using one of the Keys of Hel to launch attacks on Chaos. Rotaken btw is a fantastic artist and I highly recommend him if you can ever snag a commission from him. If I ever have the money to spare I'm definitely going to commission him for something else.
