Space Hulk Single Player

Apologies if I've put this in the wrong forum...

Having just started to get back into the hobby, in a mainly building and painting kind of way, I do think it'd be fun a play a few games.

Playing a full 40K game is unlikely at present (due to RL), but I am wondering about picking up a copy of Space Hulk, as I seem to remember (from the olde days of yore) that it can be played single player?

Is this true? And if so, is it any good to play?

Are there any other 40k games that can be played solo?

Cheer!

I played space hulk solo a few times to kill a stormy evening.

I just set a few parameters for the genestealers... sent genestealer blips to random eligible entrances, made them advance as much as possible to the marines where ever possible. Made them hang back just out of line of sight until they started to stack up, then all out attack...

It was a while ago, I'm sure I had set a few more detailed parameters, but the marines lost about 2 out of 3 matches against the algorithm so, it was still challenging.

If you can find it there's a thread on this in the "other games" forum. It's quite a while ago now though.

But to answer your question - there's no rules for it, but it can easily be done per Canadian F H's suggestions. I've done similar things and in my experience it's both challenging and good fun. One other thing I do is keep the blips secret from myself, so as the marine player I don't know which blips are 3s, 2s and 1s.

Ah yes. Definitly hide the blip values from yourself.

I found by having an aggressive algorithm predefined it made the GS turn go quickly and it felt pretty good. The random entry thing helped make them as unpredictable or more so than a human player opponent, yet my chosen logic for them was more agressive than I might have chosen for myself on the fly when I really wanted the marines to work.

Fun enough, quick due to less time spent thinking by a GS player, less bickering than a human opponent. And Def decent enough to practice the game.

If I wanted to play a 2 player match where both players were SM verses an "AI" GS force, I think it would work out pretty well to.

I believe one of the original Edition expansions (possibly Genestealer, but may have been Deathwing) had rules for solo play mode. As that's essentially the same game as the new one, I'm sure those rules could be adapted for solo play in the new version.

Will do an attic-delve at some point and will post the results if I find anything useful!

You're correct - it's Deathwing.  Have the book somewhere, introduces Solo Play, the new (back then) weapons and plenty of fluff written by the excellent Bill King.
