The Pride of Nostramo - 8th Legion Warband

Recommended Posts

Hello all, with the ETL in full swing I thought this the right time to post my growing collection. Back in the late 90’s I bought and assembled a few miniatures but never had the guts to actually paint them. Now as an adult expecting a first child, I figured it was the perfect time to start the hobby in earnest

I tried to upload the photos but I’m having a hard time. I tried the trick but it only worked on one pic.

The theme of this Warband is to stay relatively free of chaos taint, and to be mobile (as Night Lords are wont to do). I bought models for a raptor/Warp Talon build but while the models were still in the mail, GW nerfed DS. It didn’t effect me too much as I’m mostly building for fun, not to win tourneys. But I did have to adjust. The 10 Warp Talons ended up as flamer Chosen but I’m afraid to report that I won’t be able to vow them as I still have quite a bit to do on my first vow/1500point army.

Anyways, I’ll be posting the completed squads one at a time when daylight comes around. Thanks go out to the whole sub forum for constantly motivating me and giving me new ideas. Cheers!

I'm loving the looks of your guys. I think we've both been drawn to the Night Lords for quite similar reasons, primarily 'gene enhanced bat terrorists' :D

Your Sevatar conversion looks spectacular, I'd love to see a close-up and get a proper look at what you've done to him!

Thank you all for the kind words, they’re very motivational.

Below are the very first 5 man squads to serve as the backbone of the Warband. Equipment here is 2 heavy bolters and champs with a combi-bolter and plasma pistol/lightning claw respectively. I’m still working on my photography skills and any suggestions on how to use an iPad to take decent pics would be appreciated.

Anyway, as these are the first 10 models I’ve done in over fifteen years, I’m proud of them, flaws and all. I learned a lot from these guys, mainly that between the arthritis in my thumbs and the carpal tunnel syndrome, my fine motor skills are not what they once were.

Thanks for looking!

Looking good - any chance of getting pictures that better show their detail?

Yeah, sorry about the quality. I don’t have very good lighting. These two pics should show a little more detail but I’ll try using natural lighting in the future. And thank you btw.

Here’s a shot of my Havocs. Loadoat is 4 lascannons, champ with combi-bolter, and two extra CSM with bolters. I’m still having issues with clear photos as I only have my phone and my tablet. Do you guys set up multiple lamps around your minis? My pics always come out so dark. Thanks.

For mine, I have a desk lamp that I put just above the minis so that it is just out of shop, then turn off the flash on my camera.  I find that tends to make them brightly lit without the weird colour shift and displaying all my painting flaws that I tend to get when I use the flash.

Here is an example:

It's not perfect, but its easy and gives me fairly decent pictures, so I would recommend at least trying something similar.

Nice looking paintwork.

In terms of taking photos, I throw a white cloth over my computer monitor and desk to provide a complete white back drop and, when it's a little dim, use a white light lamp. I also tend to have the exposure on my camera higher than for normal photos. Getting some basic software like the free Photoshop can make it really easy to improve images too.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback and picture taking advice. It really helps me put paint to model.

@Hushrong: Thanks, I too am a fan of the batwing heads, they’re awesome. Pretty much the entire force is kitbashed from the Mk. 4 and CSM boxes, with a liberal sprinkling of terror squad helmets/torsos and NL upgrade pack.

@Sgt. Blank: Eventually I do plan to add lightning. This is my first time painting an army and I haven’t developed the confidence quite yet in my arthritic paws. My plan is to finish all the minis and then go back and add lightning to them all in big batches (after a lot of testing).

On to a photo of what will eventually be my army’s flagship unit. I’ve taken to calling them “Plaptors” and there will be 5 more and lord with a combi-Plasma. The plan here is simple, deep strike, overcharge plasma, re-roll 1’s, MELT things.

Nice! The 'plaptors' look great. You've made those Night Raptor legs look good too. I always thought they looked funny but with the basing and posing you've don't they're spot on. Interested in seeing the next five and their lord. are you going to give them the mark of slaanesh so they can shoot twice with the Endless Cacophony stratagem?

I had been doing this with terminators as I can give them all combi plasmas. They drop in, ruin something day with their shooting, then they do it again.

I love what you did to make your lord! That is truly a centerpiece for the army and quite the eye catcher! Very proper for someone who leads the Traitor Legions!

Where is the sword from? Is that from Keldrek or the new night haunt from the new AoS starter? I’ve been wanting that bit.

You guessed it, it’s Keldrek alright. Pretty damn expensive box but I justified it by telling myself that I’d use the helmet for a NL demon prince. I’m also quite fond of the little hourglass, which I glued to my Lord’s belt.

Yeah, I've been tempted to buy the Keldrek box because I want that sword. It has a more fantasy look to it that makes it stand apart from the 40k line and seeing it next to a sevatar mini it's big!  Lately I have been hunting for the Knight of Shroud out of the new starter who has a similar sword and helmet.

And you mentioned saving the helm for a daemon prince, is the helm pretty big too? Maybe too big to graft onto a power armor helmet? I was thinking about making a lord for my BL who was a former NL who bears an elaborate ceremonial helm and I wanted to use that same bit. If not I may copy you and use it on a DP, maybe using that tzeentch daemon thing from warhammer quest.

@hushrong: I’m not familiar with the rest of the AoS line but I can tell you keldrek’s sword, imo is worth the price of the set. Maybe I’m just numb from GWs prices but if it makes my model “perfect,” I’ll buy it.

I’m probably the worst person in the world to ask about proper helmet size because I love the bat crested, oversized helmets in the NL upgrade kit. I think you could use Keldrek’s helmet on any bulky looking power armored dudes but it’d probably fit a little better on primaris or terminator scale. I only own power armor guys so it’s hard for me to guess. I’m not even sure if it’ll work on a model the size of a prince.

Onto the Warband itself, I’ve had great fortune recently sourcing parts for their expansion. I’ll briefly explain. A while back I received a free Dread Saurian in the mail due to a shipping error. My label was accidentally transferred to a different order and my original order went to a sorting facility where it was opened, then sent to me more than 3 months later. Fw resends my original order. I posted the Saurian on Facebook and there was no interest. Months went by and I get a message, guy trades me straight up for a NIB knight warden. I take a shot in the dark to try to find a FW Chaos Knight upgrade kit that’s originally only sold with a basic knight for 125£. I luck out and find a set pretty cheap from South Korea. Fully expecting a recast, I received delivery yesterday (my birthday) and it was genuine. Only one spikey piece broken off. Great casting too. Total cost for FW Chaos Knight with Warden upgrade sprue: $40 shipped!

While searching for magnets for my new Chaos Knight a few days ago, I randomly checked the FW store to look at the Cerastus Knights because they’re probably my favorite models in the entire range. While searching I see that the Castigator and the Lancer are NO LONGER AVAILABLE. My heart sinks a bit and I go to eBay to search through poorly posed and/or poorly painted auctions, or those outlandishly priced :(

I searched again yesterday and while it seems that the google link to the lancer web store page is 404, it’s reachable through a search on FWs site. The Castigator still says out of stock, however. Scraping together every penny of birthday money (and then some), I panic bought a Cerastus Knight Lancer, hoping that even if it were a web store error, they would honor the purchase. Actually, my wife technically paid for it because I had previously entered the “Win a Knight” contest via email, giving her a chance to win a Knight Porphyrion which is a ridiculously expensive model.

As yet another birthday present to myself, I completed this spikey transport, the “Night Train.” It took almost the entire day, mainly because I’m painting with my secondary hand due to a mishap with a folding ladder.

Lastly, I’m in the process of developing some fluff for “The Pride” and will be posting some of it soon. Thanks for looking.

Really nice work, the gunslinger Raptor champion looks cracking; all the extra cabling on your plasma wielders adds a cool bit of extra detail and realism. The Lord is a great conversion, the sword especially.
