GK for Kill Team and non standard units for mid level play

So just for background I was putting together a bunch of my Grey Knights for sale. As I grabbed a bunch of my latest painted models I realized I’m reluctant to sell them. I’m thinking of canceling the idea and adding units I do not really use to the army an painting them as well.

For those of you that don’t know, this is my third, full GK army since their inception so I admit motivation to paint is harder to find when you’ve done the army a few times over ( thank Titan for Voldus. One of my favourite sculpts)!

I don’t have a banner bearer, or many Termies, or the flyer ther can use now. I also don’t have a standard Brother Captain, or even a Landraider.

Add to this fact that kill team is on the way, this might be a very good time for that motivation!

What combination of brother Captain builds are worth trying? Is anyone still using the banner?

I recently did a Stormraven and want to keep it in the lists. I imagine no one us using the other flyers?

I wouldn't be too surprised if GK get access to TDA. If we go with the "4 unit options" they've shown so far I'd say there'll be Strike , Purifier, Terminators and ... well the last one is tricky since I don't think GK will get Terminators AND a high mobilty (Interceptor) or heavy weapon (Purgation) option and there are no Primaris to fill the remaining slots like with the regular Marine team.

Anyway, great to see you not selling your GK, Prot. I'm looking forward to your Kill Team eventually. ;)

That’s an interesting thought. And thank you. It’s been a difficult decision. I’m hopeful Kill Team keeps GK interesting, and therefore motivating to paint. I’d love to get some other stuff in there as well.

I use a storm talon with my GK. I generally back field it, try keep out of LOS and use Astral aim. Twin Lascannon is solid for AT and TAC works well for infantry/light vehicles.

It is unlikely that anyone could get access to ST in a KT game.

I hope that we could have GKT for KT, but I am not optimistic. TA 2+ has been banned since last KT edition. but it would be very fluffy.

This is not just a Kill Team thread if you'd read the thread title carefully. ;)

Yes the idea is I use ( and maybe other people will jump aboard too) the Kill Team ruleset as motivation to paint infantry which I hope in turn motivates me/us to do units for regular 40k as well.

I’m having trouble remembering but a Stormtalon still counts as being on the table for the purposes of figuring out starting ratios for deep strike, right? It’s been a long time since I saw anyone using Stormtalons.

Yep Flyers all deploy turn 1 as per normal units (unless special rules state otherwise) and they're still a deployment option. Just cant capture objectives and don't count as a model for checking if you have something on the board at the end of a turn.

I spent a lot of time with GK in Shadow Wars and I think that clouds my memory of GK in the last Kill Team. But I will say I found GK a lot of fun in Shadow Wars so there's hope!

The Interceptors are part of my ever growing Strike collection. A long time ago someone pointed me towards a good magnetization tutorial for GK backpacks. So as a result about 10 of my Strikes can be Interceptors if need be.

I know GK don't have SIA, but I can say I learned how incredibly annoying even a Stormbolter can be with my Deathwatch. Just the pure volume of it all. I admit that aspect of the army is something I forgot or down played a lot. Part of my new direction with GK will be trying to get as many on the field as possible again.

The last Shadow Wars campaign I've played in the Skitarii player fed the Tyranid player two games in a row and then the Tyranid player just proceeded to steamroll us. Especially the GK player was struggling since he was not capable of replacing his casualties properly unlike the rest of us (AM, Skitarii and T'au). ^^

The Psybolt Ammunition Stratagem makes Stormbolter even more scary. ;)

It's super good, it's just 4x overcosted. 2cp + being hard to gain CP makes it a one use per game kind of stratagem, sadly. However, it can pretty much kill any squad if you roll above average - throw in rerolls (albeit expensive to gain) and it will wipe pretty much any squad.

Yes it's pretty much how I played it... a once per game, all or nothing, hail Mary shot at the end zone type of play.

With DW there is a +1 to wound Strat that is 2 CP as well and it is specific to the type of unit you are shooting at. But the difference is I had a way (all be it limited) of getting CP back with DW, and I always used a double Battalion. I may still try it with the GK. The problem for me is I like my 'cool' HQ's and the GK HQ's use a lot more points than my DW equivalent. The trade off being the Psychic phase (of which I had virtually none of with DW).

The Stormbolter is still a fantastic weapon. If this gets me more units/troops on the table it might be worth a shot at a long term goal of a double Battalion.

Well and CSM have a +1 to wound Stratagem without any restriction for 1CP and a double shoot Stratagem for Slaanesh units for 2CP and can take either Noise Marines or Combi-Bolter Chosen for S4 AP0 shooting. GK are still underpowered with their good stuff but it's not like they don't have anything. ^^

I liked Shadow War. It was a million times better than the last Kill Team GW released. Not as good as HoR tho unfortunately so it got dropped rather quickly in our group.

The jury’s out in what Kill Team does fir GK, but they do keep referring to it as their tightest game system with options for tournament play. I’m really looking forward to it for gameplay on a few armies that aren’t doing too well in the main system.

I would love a real reason to paint more GK Termies so I really hope that option exists in KT.

I really hope we get to use terminators in one form or another for Kill Team. It’d really suck if all they give us access to is Strikes, Interceptors and Purgation squads. We’re second last on the preview list. So just about 10 more days and we’ll find out!

Would they give us Purifiers? Maybe in this close quarters type game they would be more viable.

I'd expect Purifiers more than Purgation Squad Marine. Purgation Squad Marines only really have a purpose if they don't allow any others special weapons ... or if they invent some fancy special rule for them which is kinda unlikely.

If GK get Interceptors then their jump ability will be changed quite a bit considering that there aren't any units nearly as mobile for any kill team so far.
