Night Lords 19th Company

Salutations to all! I am Meros, 40k fanatic for 7 years and counting. After being inspired by Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Night Lords Omnibus, I have recently started to build up a Nostraman warband of my own, which will be my first major modelling project since the Blood Angels I shoddily put together in my youth. This thread exists to document all WIP models, painted models, warband lore and homebrew rules for the group's various characters. If there's anything that anyone thinks ought to change, do please make it known to me - I can always enjoy a discussion about 40k, even if I'm wrong. Not everything modelled will necessarily be legal in a 40k game, such as Nostraman Chainglaives and Thunder Hammers as melee weapons, but unless given homebrew rules for a character, they will be used to proxy weapons similar either in design or function (e.g. Nostraman Chainglaives used as Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammers used as Power Fists).

Please browse at your own leisure. This topic will (hopefully) be updated fairly regularly whenever I manage to paint more models or write some new lore. This initial post will be used to store any written lore and rules, while progress on models will be shown on replies to this topic. When completed and where applicable, lore for characters or units will be accompanied by a finished image of their model. Thanks to everyone for taking time out of your day to view some filthy heretics. Ave Dominus Nox!

Note: If any segments below are in RED, it means there's nothing there yet.

Who are the 19th Company?
The 19th Company are a fleet-based warband of Night Lords Chaos Space Marines operating from late M32 to 999.M41. As the name would suggest, the Astartes are descended from the 19th Company of the eighth legion, though over several thousand years it has absorbed other Night Lord groups including the remnants of other Night Lord legion companies and other renegade Astartes, as well as hundreds of traitor guard, hive gangers and slaves. They are currently led by Captain Dysalix Alexi, a self-stylised Jago Sevatarion tribute, who, according to most recent records, currently has 142 Astartes, 2 Dreadnoughts, and 11 void-capable naval vessels (including enough human labourers to crew them efficiently) at his disposal. While all marines fall under the 19th Company banner, many warriors from other integrated groups will keep aspects of their original iconography - most notably are the 66th Company remnants, a Raptor Cult who go by the name 'Wings of Vindication'. These marines are 19th Company in name only, allied out of pure necessity and survival instinct.

Dramatis Personae
Though many individual warriors come and go from battle to battle, there are a few under Alexi who have proven themselves as warriors of distinction, veterans of several bloody campaigns and advisors to the Captain. Though other named characters exist, they are not major characters and are of little influence within the warband when compared to these.

19th Company Lore

What follows is a complete work-in-progress documentation of the warband's history from M31 to M41, as well as data on every named character, squad, and void-capable warship under the 19th company banner as of 998.M41. Every section relating to a character or unit will explain their position in the warband and how they are represented in the tabletop army.
History

The Siege

The walls of the Imperial Palace crumble as the combined forces of the traitor legions lay waste to the surface of Terra. Captain Isho Occidenus leads his 19th Company Night Lords into the inferno alongside his trusted aide, Chaplain Strudis Ra'lem. Though the battle is long and arduous, the defeat of Horus at the hands of The Emperor himself forces the renegade legions to flee - a difficult task when the Blood Angels, Imperial Fists and White Scars vault their fortifications and viciously pursue the fleeing traitors.

Many elements of the 19th Company boarded any nearby VIIIth legion vessel out of desparation, separating Ra'lem and a small task force from the majority of their brothers. A little over 40 Astartes led by the Chaplain board the Lunar Class Battleship Black Dragon, alongside remnants of the 110th armour Company as well as dozens of renegade Imperial Army troops and Ogryns, mostly from the Diados 3rd Infantry.

The Warp being a volatile force at the best of times, the mass retreat of hundreds of heretic starships from Terra caused major problems for many, including the Black Dragon. Their intended target of Tsagualsa - the VIIIth legion's new primary stronghold - had been missed by several million kilometres, and ten thousand years. Captain Occidenus and the 19th Company regrouped with the legion and continued to serve under Konrad Curze, up to the primarch's death and beyond, until early M32 when the planet was assaulted by the Ultramarines and several of their successor chapters.

The Dissolution

During the fall of the VIIIth legion's fortress of Tsagualsa's in M32 at the hands of a unified Ultramarines legion, a majority of the 19th Company were among the defenders but were forced to retreat as the Imperial assault forced proved far too strong for the planet's comparatively meagre defensives. After a savagely one-sided battle, barely a third of the company's already severely reduced numbers were able to escape Tsagualsa and find safety within the bowels of the Forbidden Light, an Avenger Class Grand Cruiser.

The Company's survivors included a handful of tactical squads, support squads, light vehicles and Thunderhawk gunships, as well as their mortally wounded Captain, Isho Occidenus. There were also whispered rumours of Mawdrym Llansahai's presence within the vessel's Apothecarion, a circumstance that was as much a blessing as it was riddled with misfortune. His expertise ensured Captain Occidenus could continue to serve as a Contemptor Dreadnought, but the precise terms of their deal are unknown.

With troops, guns, a ship, and an insatiable lust for vengeance, the Night Lords 19th Company fled into the stars in search of loyal blood.

The Beast

It is 544.M32, and for the next 2 years, a green tide would sweep the galaxy and brought the Imperium to its knees. Like carrion birds, the 19th descended on beleaguered Imperial worlds ravaged by Orks, looting weapons, ammunition, human labourers, and above all - geneseed. It was a prosperous time and allowed the warband to grow rapidly. Even now, geneseed harvested from Black Templars, Novamarines, and even more slain by The Beast's wrath is being used to create new Astartes for the 19th Company.

It would become apparent over time that such work carried heavy risks, the most devastating being a direct encounter with The Beast's forces. The 19th Company themselves were dragged into such an engagement and would find themselves forming an uneasy alliance with the Silver Eagles chapter upon the world of Berlinir, fighting side by side to save many civilian lives from Ork marauders, before promptly backstabbing the loyal Astartes and taking many Imperial citizens as slave workers.

At the same time, a daring boarding action undertaken by then Captain Ko'han Jorvasskar also saw them work temporarily in conjunction with greenskin attackers to rid the Strike Cruiser Iron Star of the Silver Eagles and take it for themselves under the name Somberlain. Supposedly, a few surviving Orks still crawl the narrow shafts and tunnels through the ship, picking off unlucky crewmen for sustenance and sport.

Nevertheless, the spoils of war were great and more was yet to come, but luck is a finite resource.

Rho Veltan

Enter Rho Veltan, gifted psyker and apprentice of former Librarian Mathanacus Arko of the Angels Vermillion. Rho is only one of Arko's many students within the warband, but no other has ever shown such prowess as he. Veltan has in his centuries of service performed a great many psychic feats that makes Arko seem pale in comparison, which some see as clear signs of a fast-approaching violent succession.

A student chiefly in the realm of biomancy, Veltan is known to duel-wield his force weapons and blitz toward the foe's highest concentration of troops, spitting arcs of unholy lightning and tearing limb from limb with diabolical strength. Though he was inducted into the warband years prior, he earned his brutal notoriety during the Cadwalader Rebellion in 577.M41, where the 19th Company fought the Emperor's Storm 2nd Company and a small detachment of Grey Knights on the Hive World Almonax. During a brutal melee in the capital hive, Veltan and the Havoc Claws assisted Cardinal Cadwalader's cult forces in an ambush which killed several Astartes at their primary landing zone. Only moments later, the Grey Knight leader Librarian Bhuro emerged and unleashed a vast psychic storm, killing dozens - including the foolhardy Cadwalader himself - and leaving everyone else in a dizzying haze. In the confusion, Veltan had lost his Force Axe and instead retrieved one of the Knights' own Halberds, with which he eventually decapitated Bhuro, allowing the beleaguered cultists to press on.

Here began a new obsession with the Sorcerer, as he continued to seek other psykers on other battlefields within the enemies' ranks and take their weapons as trophies. As of 998.M41 his collection includes Wierdboy staffs, Witchblades, and a vast array of Astartes Force Weapons from both librarians and other chaotic sorcerers. Supposedly he also has the severed arm of a Librarian Dreadnought slain during the Battle of Burrokhar, but these reports have yet to be confirmed. Regardless, his favoured weapons in battle are a pair of Force Swords, one ancient Dark Angel blade recovered during the Thramas Crusade by Isho Occidenus, and the other is his mentor Mathanacus' old Force Weapon taken from the Angels Vermillion chapter.

19th Company Army List

Listed below will be every unit that will, in due time, become a part of my tabletop army. When completed each entry will have the unit name, cost (in power level and points), weapons, upgrades, and the composition of multi-model units. Please bear in mind that, while some of these I have already built and painted, many others are still liable to change. Any fully modelled (but not necessarily painted) units will appear in GREEN, while everything else can still be modified will remain white. Also please note that characters without their own special rules in the next section will be, while unnamed, represented by an existing Chaos model. e.g. Chaplain Strudis Ra'lem is represented by a Dark Apostle.

Ave, brother!

Now this is the kind of thing I really love to see: some history, promises of unique units, and personality.  I rather like what you've got going on and bloody great start, mate.  Bold choice to start with the end of the Siege and go forward, rather like it myself.  So, I'll definitely be following along.

All the best regards from the 16th legion's 65th company.

Thank you very much, such swift feedback is really appreciated!

Starting with the Siege came about mostly because there wasn't a whole lot to say about the 19th beforehand, they were just another company doing what their primarch told them. It was during the Siege and the events that transpired after that really shook the boat and gave these guys some individuality. There's a good chance I'll touch on conflicts like the Thramas Crusade and the Scouring of the Nostramo Sector, but these'll probably be references in character profiles as opposed to full entries of their own.

I'll keep you posted - hopefully I'll get some of my models uploaded today.

Now time for some miniatures! Do bear in mind these are taken with a smartphone with some bits of paper as a stage, but I reckon it'll look alright.

These are some cultists, currently far, far from completion, but posted to show their general appearance. Most of the models are made from the Necromunda Orlock Gang models, with some added Imperial Guard and Militarum Tempestus bits both to make them appear more unique and less repetitive, but also to represent how these cultists will loot their weapons and wargear from dead Imperials, and how some of them are perhaps traitor guard themselves.

20180712_195046.jpg

And here are a couple of painted Cultists.

20180712_194625.jpg

Here are some examples of 5 out of a current total of 10 Khorne Berzerkers, who while not truly devoted to Khorne as a part of my lore and are more akin to the Terror Squads of old, use Khorne Berzerker rules to make them mean in a melee. None of these are painted yet, other than the guy on the left who has some undercoating.

20180712_195935.jpg

An actual finished squad? Yes, here are a unit of Mk.IV Astartes in their fully painted glory. If you're reading this at a point where this lore hasn't been explored in the original post, it may seem odd that my rag-tag warband maintains an entire squad's worth of pristine Heresy-era armour. In reality, the detachment lost in the warp while escaping Terra arrived out of the warp 10,000 years in the future, close to the planet of Burrokhar where the modern 19th company were engaged in battle. A bit of a deus ex machina, yes, though I'm happy that it allows me to use these Horus Heresy miniatures in 40k games and still abide by universal canon.

More to come in the following days, keep your eyes on this topic if you're interested!

Thanks a lot ^^

Steal that by all means, I'm happy to have inspired someone :biggrin.:

Time for more models, another mix of painted and plastic for now but with a lot more painted stuff to show off. But for now, we're starting with the model for the Wings of Vindication Chaos Lord Ulyon Juraghurst. I wonder if you can tell why I called him 'The Barbed' yet? Yes, the flaky green stuff is intentional - Chaos warpy daemon stuff - for unlike most of the others in this warband, Juraghurst and his Raptors are devoted followers of Khorne.

barbed.jpg

Time for some Terminators. These are a couple of my Cataphractii Termies, the former bodyguard of Captain Occidenus before the warp whisked them away. I decided to add a few trinkets to jazz up the unit, with the Sergeant using the loin cloth from the Daemon Prince kit as a little cape, and the other attaching a chaotic icon to his back.

termysarge.jpgtermysarge2.jpg

termy1.jpg

I believe this chap here, Rho Veltan, is both one of the first times I've tried a glowy sword effect, and also one of the first models I've ever pulled together just from spare parts. I think the blue glow from his eyes and horns is a bit too much, but I did intend for it to be quite severe to display Rho's overwhelming and worryingly unrestrained psychic power.

rho1.jpgrho2.jpg

And we'll end with what are perhaps a pair of my favourite models to date, the mascots. The one on the left is unfortunately unpainted as of now, but once I realised I had an Armourium cherub, a skull, and some bat wings, I knew what I had to do.

Thanks Nemac, I appreciate the comments ^^

It's at this point where I'd like to ask a question to my small band of assembled followers here. How are the rules for Renegades and Heretics in this edition, and should I perhaps expand my Cultist forces into a full traitor guard army? On one hand I've not really heard good things about the rules, and Forge World have stopped producing all the traitor guard models, but it would be nice to be able to use my proposed Imperial Army units and maybe even some looted tanks and sentinels to give me more options and variety in army building.
