Kill Team Focus: Deathwatch

Well moving 6 then shooting 24, that's almost across the board, I had not thought of the half range though. Though at 8 the Frag cannon has a lot more shots. Unfortunately Primaris are quite expensive when you take into account that you are paying 4 points just for the rifle and that annoying pistol we keep having to take.

Shotguns are short range... so not so great imo. I used the Infernus HB because that’s what I had modeled. It can pretty much shoot anywhere and not heavy with the specialist upgrade to move and you can ready the model is clutch.

I’m hearing some good things about Reivers.

I think if you know your going against some melee then they aren't bad especially with the 2D slug but for some reason the normal Bolter is 0 cost so again its a hard choice. It seems that the SIA tax is rolled into the Vet models again like 7th. The Primaris weapons are 2 Cost so its just weird the way they've done it. I am reading it right that the Boltgun is 0?

With the Knife the Reivers seem really good. Lots of attacks.

I played against a Scion killteam yesterday with lots of hotshot lasguns, a couple of snipers, flamer and Sergeant with plasma pistol and power fist. I pretty much put the IHB on ready the whole game and it did some work. Bolters with SIA is really good imo.

What does everyone think of the shotguns? Still situationally useful? My planned team is Sgt with bolter and Xeno, Vet gunner with Frag, Vet with bolter and Sword, Vet with maul and bolter, and a vet with a shotgun.

The board to play KT is very small so I think it's worth to give shotgun a shot :)

Long range weapons might be a bit less useful. One heavy gunner should be enough.  There's plenty of cover also (thank the Emperor for SIA). Shotguns and flamers may not be bad in KT.

I don't think you can have 4 gunners.

Also, still not really convinced about frag. Combi-plasma might be actually better, same S, better AP, four shots up close. Sure, you won't have flamer but on flip side you'd have one arm free. In fact, might actually try combi-meltas for the first time in 8th, seeing they are very cheap and pretty versatile in KT.

Up to 4 Vets can be Gunners so I think its possible.  The problem with Melta is there really aren't many targets that benefit from that Strength. I really hope later on that they add higher toughness targets so that Flamers and volume of fire don't seem so powerful.

With the smaller board close quarter battles are the norm, the frag cannon just gives you room to breath, not many want to get within 8.

You can get five vets including sergeant and blackshield for 100 points with all the goodies you want. Power sword and bolter is the way to go for the regular vets IMO. Flamers are not as good for OW since opponent can opt to never charge that vet .

Everyone above was right it tells you to use the Space Marine general tables so they are 16/17(Reiver, Sgt) and 15/16/16(Int, Gunner, Sgt). Just remember to use the DW weapon prices so thats 2 for the rifle/carbine and 2 more for pistols.

Yeah at first I thought the bolt guns and rifles were both 2 points and forgot about the pistol. This made me think that Primaris were just better but the bolt gun is free from what I can see so that makes the Primaris 4 points more for that extra wound.

Thanks.

And wow, so 4 points for special issue ammo on Deathwatch duty.

That seems a bit steep, same price as a plasma gun.

SIA is really good though. The Dragonfire really has a place now. Lots of ways to get cover in the game.

Looking at the points, It looks like we are really going to struggle getting more than 5 guys in a team.

Having a play around I came up with a 5 and a 6 man team:

5 Man Kill Team:

- Intercessor Sergeant w/ Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol, Power Sword

- Black shield w/ Power Sword, Storm Shield

- Veteran Gunner w/ Frag Cannon

- Veteran w/ Boltguns, Power Swords

- Veteran w/ Combi-Plasma, Power Sword

100 Points, could swap some stuff around for the Infernus HB, or potentially another Fragcannon

6 Man Kill Team:

- Veteran Sergeant

- Black Shield

- 4x Veterans

all with Boltguns and Power swords / Maul

What do you guys think would be the stronger team? Be good to hear what you guys are doing for yours

5 man Primaris kill team. Everything Primaris is around 20ppm so 5 man best we can do.

Intercessor Sgt: power sword, auto bolt rifle w SIA, bolt pistol w SIA - 22

Intercessor: stalker bolt rifle w SIA, bolt pistol w SIA - 19

Reiver: bolt carbine w SIA, heavy bolt pistol w SIA - 20

Reiver: bolt carbine w SIA, heavy bolt pistol w SIA - 20

Reiver: combat blade, heavy bolt pistol w SIA, grapple gun - 19

No points left for any level progress though. A level 2 specalist adds 4 points I think. As soon as one of them levels up it might have to be a 4 man team...

I get that Special Ammo is great. But it doesn't make sense to pay for it per weapon. If it was 4 points per model then fine, but it costs twice as much for a model with carbine and pistol as it does for a sword and pistol.

Especially odd to make pistols 2 points when they can't shoot in combat and they don't add an attack for 2 combat weapons. Pistols are totally pointless if you have another gun. Or have I missed something?

This raises an interesting question that I’ve not seen in any of the rules leaks: must a model be promoted if it has the minimum amount of experience? As in, must my combat specialist go from level 1 to 2 if he gained enough xp, or can I choose to keep him at level 1 to save on points?

I personally dont see why you cant keep him at level 1. In a campaign you can always bring new guys in, so theres no difference if he was to level up then you bring in a new guy exactly the same to replace him for a game.

Not levelling means you grow more attached instead of just subbing him out for a newbie

True, the only ‘cost’ incurred is using an additional slot in your 20-model roster. I suppose if a specialist has to level up, you can just create a new, level 1 specialist of the same type and sub it in, avoiding the level 2 tax. In a drawn out campaign you could chew through your 20 slots quickly, though.
