Filter System / Trigger Words

Hey there.

As far as I remember, it was mentioned at some stage that there's a filter system on the forums that can be toggled on/off to filter out certain words. Most places tend to use it in relation to swearing, however by and by the large that doesn't seem to be as big an issue over here; asides from people coming up with creative ways of circumventing any potential filters.

Would it be possible to get this explained in more depth? I'm also curious to know if there are 'trigger' words that alert a member of the moderation team when they are used, somewhat similar to the eSafe system we use in many of our educational facilities now to monitor student and staff messages for inappropriate material.

Also, I motion that all mentions of the "Horus Heresy" and "Age of Darkness" become "Space Brexit" instead. And that the Age of Darkness sub-forum be renamed accordingly.

We have filters that change certain words to other words. Most of these are for profanity, but some are spelling/special symbols.

Many (but not all) swear words and sexually suggestive words are turned into either the swear emoticon or other words. Some words are rude, but not filtered because whether or not they are rude depends upon context. An example of this is "ass" which might be an animal, a shortening of "assault," or an insult. If the usage is directed at someone in particular, we'll take action (if/when we see it). If it's not meant to insult someone else, we'll let it go.

There are two words with special symbols that get filtered to have those symbols without having to figure out how to enter them: Khârn and Ulthwé (yes, I only had to enter the "a" and the "e" and the software added the doodads above them).

The word "emperor" is often spelled incorrectly, and unlike the incorrectly spelled "rouge" (when the user means "rogue") the incorrect spellings aren't real words, so we autocorrect that.

There isn't any notification process - the filtering is done automatically by the board software. It's up to the mods to catch the substitutions (e.g., using special symbols to try and bypass the swear filter). We rely upon the vigilance of the mods and the members in identifying when language is inappropriate and reporting it.

The basic guideline is that you should speak to/about others here at the B&C the same as you would speak with your grandparents, a clergyman/woman, or a judge.
