New to Sisters of Battle! Questions about some rules.

Hello! Excited to jump into Sisters of Battle! I've played a couple games with my girls, and I have a few questions about how some of the units work.

  • When one of the Geminae dies, can I use the Martyrdom stratagem? The stratagem itself doesn't specify that a unit with the character keyword has to be slain, just a character. Since the Geminae are models with the character keyword, does this work?

  • Repressors: Can the girls inside benefit from the Canoness's reroll aura? Follow up, if the Repressor is declared as the target of a charge, do the embarked Sisters get to fire overwatch?

  • In regards to Acts of Faith, if I use one to make a unit move and advance, can that unit then move and advance during its move phase?

Thanks! Real stoked about this army.

Hi there. Always nice to see someone new about.

  • You can, but the Stratagem says "Remove that unit from the battlefield." Using the Stratagem on one of the Geminae would mean killing Celestine too. Permanently.
  • The Repressor says that the unit gets to shoot in the Shooting Phase specifically, and the rules on transports say that auras only affect units embarked on transports if specifically stated in the aura's rules. As such that means that the Canoness' aura wouldn't apply and the unit would not be able to fire as part of Overwatch.
  • Yep. For all intents and purposes it's another Movement Phase.

You advance wen you Move in the Movement phase. The scout move is not a normal move and it’s not in the movement phase.

I’m no rules expert, but neither have I seen anyone Advance Dominions during their scout move :P

Okay, the question is to compare the wordings.

Dominions

I do not see much diffrence. They should work the same. I guess. Both CAN advance or NOT. But the rulebook states than when you move in the movement phase you CAN declare advance.

Well, a little perspective. When i use my Imperial Guard order Move Move Move! in the shooting phase, they are definitely allowed to advance.

Both say move as per the movement phase, and "When you pick a unit to move in the Movement phase you can declare it will Advance" BRB 177

Doms can advance when they scout. You are also able to advance when making an Act of Faith move.

This has been the common interpretation I've encountered at tournaments. The tournament judge's ruling was incorrect.

Move as if it were the movement phase. Advance away, though remember you count as having advanced when you shoot whether or not you do so in your 1st turns movement phase.

No you don't, not for Vanguard. It happens before the first game turn:

1. the rules for Advancing specifically state that the unit can't shoot or charge later that turn .

2. the rules for shooting Assault Weapons state you apply the -1 to-hit if you advanced that turn .

Since Vanguard happens before the first player takes their turn, Dominions (and units with similar rules) can advance without penalty.

Well it looks like you can then :P

I mean it feels to me that the intent would not be to be able to advance then shoot as normal but then RAI isn’t real rules, and I’m not a mind reader so who knows :D

You can't advance and shoot after an act of faith, but you can in your premovement scout move. It's before the game begins and is fluffy even. Your scouts showed up a turn before everyone else, essentially.

Sure you can assault and shoot after an Act of Faith, as long as you're using assault weapons. You just incur the -1 to-hit like normal.

Unless, of course, you mean "you can't assault and then immediately shoot after an Act of Fait", in which case you'd be correct!

If you want to be needlessly pendantic, we can do that.

I mean you can't advance and shoot after an act of faith.

Assualt weapons allow you to get around that be letting you advance and shoot, but in general, the above rule is correct. You cannot advance in your act of faith and fire, unless you have a specific weapon that allows you to do that, however, advancing in the scout move doesn't affect that and you may fire a nonassualt weapon your first turn if you advanced in the scout move but did not advance in your first turn.

=][=That's enough. This subforum will not be a place where animosity gains a hold. The rules have plenty of examples where their interpretation is open for debate. That, however, does not excuse poor manners, NOR IGNORING THE RULES. The argument stops.

Now =][=

Hi there. Always nice to see someone new about.

From the CA FAQ as of 8/12/18

Q: Can I use the Martyrdom Stratagem when any model from the Celestine unit is slain?

A: No. Only when the entire unit has been destroyed.

Was anyone else completely unaware that this had been FAQ'd to change it from Commander Dawnstar's answer to the above? Was I just not paying attention?

What about dominions and their scout move? Can you advance during it?

The judge at local tournament sad to me that we cannot, but failed to provide proof from faq or any other GW source.

I think you might have misunderstood the purpose of the Judge in a tournament.  They aren't there to help you find the location of rules.  They are there to make a quick decision when 2 players can't agree.  Their decision might be wrong, but will still stand for that match.

If you know the page number or FAQ where the answer to a particular question can be found, then no judicial ruling would be necessary, because you know the rules and you can show your opponent the proper source.

It does suck when a judge makes the wrong call... but that is why it is important to know your rules.  If you know your rules for your army frontward and backward and have the relevant sections bookmarked or photocopies (with source and page) then all of your rules interactions will always stand.  Hopefully, your opponent will do the same.
