Ashenwyte's Sons of Horus

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I've decided to pick up Horus Heresy after finding a local gaming group and I've gone with the Sons of Horus, as they seem to be fun and quite tactically flexible. I was inspired by Kizzdougs' fantastic Sons of Horus, and I've tried to go for a similar look. (Imitation is the highest form of flattery, after all!)

Without much more, here's my test model. I don't have an airbrush yet and my attempt to spray preshade ended up disastrous due to the humidity here in Singapore. Drybrushed Ulthuan Grey over some black brush on primer and applied a coat of Incubi Darkness, Kabalite Green and medium mix which I heard would be similar to Lupercal Green.

I'll be getting an airbrush soon, so while waiting for that it's greenstuffing time.

Have a nice day!

Looks great - awesome first attempt, especially for SoH as their colour is notoriously fiddly!

Only thing i'd say is maybe the dry brushing is just a bit too heavy on the legs? Maybe bring it down with a glaze or wash?

The drybrushing was super rough, I agree. The next models' armour will be done with an airbrush.

Great start on your Sons of Horus!

Looking forward to seeing this army grow!

Cheers!

Here are the first fellows to get some greenstuff work. While not the best, it adds some personality to them and I doubt the imperfections will be noticed much when they're in a 20 man tactical squad.

Not the most exciting stuff, I know, but once these lads are assembled and GS'd painting them will be an absolute blast.

Dunno, dude.  The GS process and prep is usually the time where you really get to fiddle and toy with what makes the legions your own, eh?  Hah, and they're lookin' great, no doubt about it.  Airbrush, pin wash and inks are always the way to go for those big squads (which are always my favourite).

Kizzdougs stuff is always just fantastic, and his Emperors Children are making me want to go repaint all of mine, so I know the feeling.  But I'm definitely set on following along and seeing where your Sons of Horus are goin'.  Got a company or chapter or tactical theme in mind for 'em?  -laughs- All the best from the 65th!

It’s looking good! Green stuff is an area where I definitely struggle but if you stick to it it goes a long way. The custom work does wonders for making even line infantry looks unique!

Hey,

6PTIpNc.jpg

Short update, more greenstuff work done on these fellows (I'd work on the vexilla dude but his standard's gone missing and I'm a bit miffed). An airbrush and all the things you need for an airbrush will be on their way, and once that comes and I've had a bit of practice I'll be able to get to what I'm really lookin forward to, the painting.

To avoid this being a micro-update, here's more. I was thinking about the insignia that these guys will wear. While I'd get the decal sheet, it's quite expensive and I'd have to get more than one eventually, which adds up. I'd also have to get micro-sol and micro set which would be fairly expensive here, and so I was considering a laser-cut stencil that would be the size of a shoulder pad decal and spraying paint through that via airbrush.

Would that work? Haven't done much with stencils before.

Stencil sounds neat and in practice sounds like a good idea. But I don't have any airbrush stuff nor experience so I can't shine much light on that.

What symbol were you thinking of going with?

The Eye of Horus, definitely, along with Legion Roman numerals. Might do the circular Eye that's on the decal sheet as well as variations of the rune the test model has on his shoulder-pad.

It will be interesting to see. I'm sure you could use the spray and then do touch ups with a brush if need.

And thinking back to getting laser cut stencils. Could you make your own icons to put onto tanks and vehicles?

Definitely could. Lodge symbols and the like would be fairly easy to make, and would be quite distinctive.

That's a nice tester, the green looks just right. The armour customisation is off to a good start too.

Thank you!

Hey,

It's been a bit since I've posted since I'm waiting for my airbrush to arrive. Because of a website error it hadn't been registered, so I should be getting it this Sunday, which is right before school starts. Wonderful. :dry.:

In the mean time, I found five Warriors of Chaos shields in my bits and they seem like they make alright breacher shields. I know KrautScientist has done a conversion like this, and I'm sure there are others who've done it too. I blu-tacked on the shields to five MKIII marines that were lying around. What do you think?

This is more of a proof of idea than anything else, but I think these look decent. If I was to use these for the SoH I'd remove the Chaos stars and replace them with Eye of Horus symbols because these guys aren't fully into Chaos worship.

However, my plans for Sons of Horus list focus more on being fast and breachers don't fit into that role.

They're a cool unit, maybe I'll do up a force of Word Bearers for ZM since I've got the idea to convert Gal Vorbak from Primaris marines like frankendoodle65 did. If so, leaving the Chaos stars on would be less of an issue.

Another thought is to do Space Wolves considering that once the icons are filed off these could fit quite a few legions imo. I have the BoP decals as well so those wouldn't be a problem.

Next post will be exciting as I'll have the airbrush by then, and then it's painting time!

Nice job, mate!  Honestly, I'd say a small group of breachers in any legion force is a good solid idea... not because the unit is somehow mathematically good, but because it feels good to have a response unit that should be able to hold a corridor or plug a gap to hold an enemy in place while the fast elements go to work and butcher them from another angle :P  So a minimum sized unit looks pretty good even if they're loaded up in a rhino or running to get into range.

I rather like the chaos shields for them, especially as the majority have those built in gun loops.  Shave down the chaos icons (or keep them for word bearers, that'd be great too) and keep the mk. III armour and they'll look just fine.  They might be a touch narrow in comparison to the usual breacher shields, but I think they do look he part, and when paired with the slab-sided mk. III helms they do fit the bill.

Best of luck with getting that airbrush, hopefully even ahead of schedule, eh!

Haha, your airbrush will be your 'going back to school gift' waiting for you at home all day. As luck would have it! I am looking forward to you hooking it up and going to work with it!

Breachers look good and I agree with Vykes that they would be nice to have around. Your other ideas are pretty sweet and they are all valid. I am especially interested in seeing you make some Gal Vorbak as that idea has been lingering in the back of my head since seeing Frankendoodle's work. I really want Sons of Horus Luperci but I just couldn't make that work for my Kill Team as I had hope. I'll be making them a possessed unit for my Black Legion instead.

Well, the airbrush arrived, and I've been testing it out with reasonable success. I really am enjoying it, it's super easy to use and gets models primed fast in this infernally humid weather.

I got some Daler Rowney Dark Green ink in lieu of my mix as getting it into the paint cup of the airbrush was a real PITA with the pipette and I didn't want to pour it and risk pouring far too much than I want. Here's what it looks like on a test model.

Not pleased with it, I'll be honest. It's far too saturated imo and I prefer the first test model. I'll try out the old paint mix again and see how that works out.

Comments and criticism welcome. :smile.:

Thank you!! I agree, though I am planning on running two 20 man tac squad blobs with apothecaries so I think that niche is covered already.

Thanks, Hush! The Gal Vorbak project seems a little daunting as I haven't really done super extensive GS sculpting before but it'll be good practice and there are no mistakes in Chaos, just happy little accidents. I'm looking forward to the possessed you come up with for your Black Legion, I'm sure they'll look great.

I reckon those shields will look great with some Eyes of Horus and maybe some chains on.

I was considering getting some greenstuff pressmould templates from ML Shields on FB, and chains would spice it up a bit. Thanks for your thoughts!

Nice, they look pretty darn good!

Thank you!

Very nice start and I am super jealous. I may have to cave and get an airbrush one day. Then learn how to use it. My buddy just started using his to paint terrain and that thing is awesome.

The green is looking good, its definitely more of a seafoam green than say the shade the salamanders use. So there is no mistaking which legion this astartes hails from. However, I think I would like to see that marine with more paint to see the overall look. See the final product with the trim and details done with gold and black. Seeing other paint mixes applied to other test minis would be nice too.

And yes, making Gal Vorbak will be fun. Even more so now that there is a price hike on FW it seems. I definitely want to use primaris as a base and it will be a huge test in trial and error for sculpting. But fortunately 'happy little accidents' are more than acceptable for those twisted by chaos and possession. :smile.:

Thanks, hush! Getting an airbrush is definitely worth it, due to the weather here making it impossible to spray prime on an average day. The FW price hike is quite crappy, though I do have family in the U.K who could send stuff over to me I guess.

Well, here's the test model with more paint. I still don't like it too much, but the brass is looking nice.

IMG_20180904_191404.jpg

Not too happy with the paint scheme even now, so I'll go back to the original mix. The bronze looks nice though, and I tried to paint the eye lenses which are not too noticeable. Oh well.

A bit sick of painting tests, but I've ordered some dropper bottles which should arrive tomorrow, making putting paint mixes into an airbrush much easier. Darn you Citadel, and your pots which look cute but are bad in most other ways!

I will be getting Calth at the end of the week (Thank the Emperor for the FLGS), so expect to see some Justaerin and some of that sexy MKIV plate!!

Thanks for reading :)

It's looking good! I hear you on spray painting in certain regions. I never knew it was the humidity making my spray primer gunk up on all my models. So when I moved back to the states I was honestly afraid to base my minis with a shaker can.

Looking forward to seeing what you churn out as you try to nail down the scheme. I would also recommend seeing about getting your hands on some paints like Scale75. I only started using them recently and they are great but my favorite thing is they are in a dripper bottle.

Definitely want to see what you cook up with the Calth box. That sucker is loaded with goodies.
