So they both show a different side of Nurgle (intentional or not...!):

 

The Green one looks jovial, full of life and embodies the Grandfather's gifts and has lots of contrast (the area with rusty blade & eyes immediately takes focus).

 

The Bone one looks grim, determined and locked to his fate. The colours bleed together into the inevitable conclusion.

 

Both are great, but without saying a decision i'll leave it at the above...

I'm 100% agreeing with the above, Charlo kinda nailed the reason why.  Like Brother Callidan, I think I'm leaning a little bit more towards the green as the colour just pops a bit more and is seen a little less frequently than the bone.  Plus, you nailed the nice contrast between that rich rust and bright eyes, then the lively, rather than sickly, green.  

 

The big question becomes, whatcha' got for a basing theme going on? :) Seriously well done though, mate!

I am loving that green! It's so vibrant and alive...despite who's bearing that armor. Plus, it is nice to see green Plague marines. I love seeing them reminiscent of their old legion colors but green just brings me back to the old ways.

These are really nice.

 

As the others have pointed out that green one is more unique these days. The way you’ve done it is lovely and I think that is swinging it (hopefully that is what your thinking too).

 

I’ve recently been considering making Deathguard that look like they are radioactive or glowing slightly. I noticed it hasn’t been done as much as you might expect (according to a quick google anyway). You have the skills to do it. That green guy is right on the edge of this idea anyway.

Both look really great and a fitting basejob will go a long way making each style looking even better.

I don't think there's any wrong decision here so I'd approach it in a different way. What kind of style would you enjoy more to paint your army in? Especially with your already painted armies in mind since switching up things is never a bad idea.

 

I think I'd get tired of the vibrant green quickly but with the white-ish style I'd feel like I'm missing out on a very striking style. Kinda difficult. Maybe you could find some kind of compromiss between those two? :sweat:

I have been leaning to the 'toxic' green... I wanted to do an irradiated green look. I think anything can be a little fatiguing after a while. 

 

I did realize during my last DG army that a 'drab' appearance was just soaking into the table too much for my liking. On an individual basis I really liked the look just fine but the details were lost. What I like about this is it's going to jump off the table a bit more, and it's a lot of fun, and still suitable to the army. The beauty of Death Guard I suppose.

 

Base wise I hate to disappoint but I really have enjoyed the GW line for bases. They are as difficult to paint as you like. I like to put a fair amount of colour on them, but you really don't have to. They are also very accessible.  I may look at the Mechanicus version which I think can be mixed in with the Sector Imperialis (which is what I've traditionally used.)

If you're going green would look amazing if they were super puss-y-yellow...!

 

That's a good thought. 

 

Eventually I will go back to Daemon support. Yellow based, vomitatious colours would be a good compliment! :tu:

Here is something I'm wavering on.... the process is too long and I can't even tell if I like it anymore...

This is kind of an 'inbetween' stage.

This is what the greens look like after quite a process of airbrushing, and washing with Coelia Greenshade. I removed some of the shade with chemical before going in with more detail (this brings back the brilliance of the sickly green/yellow top highlight which is severely removed from the shade.)

Then I go ahead and finish the details:

Here you can see the original two dudes, plus a few I plopped on bases just to remove the 'noise' on the base.(These are Ultra bases, I just plopped the figs on , they aren't glued.)

You can see a nearly finished Terminator for comparison. There's the guy on the far left halfway through the process just for comparison as well. The guy to his right is newly completed.

This takes a VERY long time and I'm not sure it's worth the investment of time. The 'bone' colour one off I did in the middle takes far less process.

Is this good or bad? Is it worth the time?

While the green is nice in close up pic, it seems they loses a lot of details (trim, volume, battle damage, mutation) when looked from farther away.

 

Because of that, I do not like this scheme.

 

It might work better for larger models, but I do not like it for infantry. Unless they were meant for showcase over tabletop.

Well that's fair. I actually think that's my issue with the bone one.... but in the end I was shooting for a sickly green.

 

My problem is the amount time each fig is taking me.. unless I'm winning a best painted for an army display, I'm not sure this is a realistic goal for myself.

I do love the blue you got going on that bone marine and termi.

 

Maybe if you changed the trim color? Anything that contrast to break all that bone/green. Anything that get's the eye could be what you need to make them great

Like that blue on the terminator make him stand out feom the others. Or the orange on the knife.

I really like these guys. It's easy for me to say 'yes it's worth it' but your the one having to put the effort in. You mentioned the comic illustrations and it does remind me of colourful comic strips.

 

Seems like it's the shading step that is the pain. Could you do a shade that doesn't dull the colours as much so you don't have so much work to do to get those bright colours back again? How about a red or orange shade? Would that work? I'm going outside my own experiences now unfortunately. What do Salamander players do? They have a bright green and probably have some tricks to get it done quickly.

No I haven't. I would hate to put that much effort into a larger model, and potentially 'ruin' it, or have to just redo it.

 

I find almost any scheme I've tried in the past years has some tendency to wash out detail to some degree. I'm starting to think it's just the nature of the Death Guard scheme combined with the sculpts.

 

I see some guys come up with a decent base colour, and quickly zip out a few squads and they don't really worry as much about tentacles, worms, armour cracks, etc, etc.. .they just worry about the base appearance of the armour.

 

My last DG was lost in the deeper green, with the Bone model I think it's similar. The neon/sickly green seems to be following the same pattern. I think I like how it looks, just the details seem a bit lost. That's why I started doing such stark contrast on the horns, and now the tentacles. Those horns are a lot of aquatic or icey colours of blues. The blades and metallics are loaded in rust for strong contrasts.

I don't know why, but I got bored of it really quick. Not just painting it, but I mean looking at it.

 

Maybe 'bored' is a bad word. I just kept pulling them out, and putting them away, and every time I looked at it... I felt like the super yellow-greens, and the stupid 'minty' green didn't look good. The 'minty' green is an accident. I wanted to keep the Choelia Grenshade look.

 

What I did was go back... re-hit the greens and change the yellow-green super highlight into a baby poop. I took a colour from the Army Painter line I like, and mixed it with Dead flesh from Vallejo and really thinned it down to get a diffused, fleshy-green.

 

It's still bright, but less yellow. I have no idea what I'm doing now.

 

So I'm going to finish the 5 or so guys I've been doing in part of a rotation with my 240954 other armies. I find they are still very labour intensive. So when they are done I will re-assess. There's so many extras on Plaguemarines which make the final product look very different.

 

We'll see if I like it, love it, or am going to trash it and try that fleshy/bone variant.

 

When I look at a lot of examples I do see a few bright green that I like. And as someone mentioned there is a TON of bone coloured DG out there.

Sounds like you got tired by the strong colours. Basically what I said before. Such strong colours have a great impact but looking at them repeatedly and in greater numbers is just tirering.

I don't know... perhaps. I just started feeling like the 'base' green was getting too similar to ... a 'goblin' type of colour which is why I like that Coelia greenshade and what it does to darken/enhance the green in a direction I prefer. The colours were getting too close to yellow for me.

 

I just finished a few hours last night, so I'll see what they look like tonight after a bit more time and try to post pics. Probably no one will even notice a real difference. lol

I still prefer a dirty green for Nurgle stuff. It seems with the bright green GW shows on the Codex and people wanting something special and do the white/bone from their HH times most people have forgotten about a darker and dirty green being an option. ^^

Sorry for the darkness. I can see a lot of transitions are gone from the lack of light, but you hopefully get the idea.
