Suggestions for fighting necrons?

I haven't had the chance to play a necron player in quite a while. I will be playing one soon. I know about quantum shielding and their get up and fight again rules.

I'm wondering if I should go with 60 poxwalkers with blight haulers or 3 squads with PM with blight launcher or plasma in each squad with blight haulers. I expect my bloat drones to do their normal dirty work.

I've not been too impressed with termies in 8th edition but I'm dying to try out my blight lord squad. I've got 3 combi plasma, one flail and one reaper auto cannon in the squad. I can also pop a lord in termie armor with them to give them rerolls.

Just curious as to what those with experience fighting necrons have had and what units you would suggest.

I use the blight grenade strategy for the super sized squad of PM that makes all of them throw blight grenades instead of just one guy. the elite character boosts their blight grenades plus it makes them give out mortal wounds. I keep cloud of flies on the PM squad to keep them from being shot by hiding them behind the blight haulers. so he can't shoot them all game. my blight grenades will obliterate his wraiths that I know he will send right at me.

It is a potential of 72 grenades from the PM squad and the purifier doing 2 DMG for each grenade and a mortal wound for every 6 I roll for wounds in addition to the grenade damage. The DP is giving them reroll all wounds since the grenades are plague weapons. When I get the PM squad in range for fight phase toss in Blades from Typhus and Vitality from the DP to watch them straight up butcher with the two flails in the squad.

Use the blight bombardment with veterans of the long war with arch contaminator and reroll 1s from a lord/dp and those wraiths will disappear.

If you go the PM route take plasma on the champ and blight launchers in the squads.

I'd love to give you solid advice, but Necrons can be such a hard match up.

I think Poxwalkers actually have great use in tying up the Immortals/Warriors.

The big problem is going to be the Fly units.... Destroyers in mass, the Wraiths, Super heavies... they're going to require you to be really flexible.

I really do like the Noxious Blightbringer in this match up in most of my games. Especially if he's using the flyers and for Wraiths.

Wraiths as you know, can't be held up. I actually found Manreapers or Mortarion is what I liked here. On top of casting mortal wounds left and right. The Wraiths are something I would work to beat up quickly before they start to dictate your movement because of their hit and run type abilities. Aside from Mortal wounds, anything multi damage is nice against Wraiths because basically you're going to be waiting on him to miss a 3++ and the multi damage is key then. (also be aware of killing about half a squad will severely tempt him to roll RP on the squad via the strat).

The Destroyers are nasty with built in hatred, but the character support units can also be key. They typically don't do a whole lot otherwise. C'tans are so much better this edition too. Access to mortal wounds and movement make them dangerous... It really depends on what he takes. I think this Necron codex has a lot more depth than previous editions. He can show you a few different looks that work equally well, but you will be well suited to take him down with the Putrifier squad. If he  doesn't target them early enough you may be able to do some serious damage with them (I often use that squad myself.)

Daemon princes, and lots of them. They fly, do tons of damage, and one can shred through a squad of crons by themselves. Winged princes also have the speed to catch out the fast necron units.

What is his list look like?

It is rather weird that...their only well-agreed "tournament competitive" build is...3 vaults.

Necron all-comers lists are easier to manage. Destroyers are their key units. Most necrons are weak in melee, but Wraiths need to be noticed. Any weapon which output plain exactly 3 damage would hurt them badly.

They also have weak psychic defense. So a nice chance for Princes(and Morty).

He will probably something like this:

6-9 Wraiths

2 or 3 Immortal max size

2 Doomsday Arks

Large squad of Tomb Guard bikers (I think that's their name)

Necron Lord

Crypteks for orb of whatever its called

The Triarch spdier thingy that lets you reroll 1s on whatever you are targetting

I know he doens't have things like flayed ones. He may be bringing a lot of destroyers.

So the list I posted above...could it handle something like this? I don't want too many high damage weapons because of that quantum shielding crap.

Yea I find the wraiths very hard to deal with with DG. There just isn’t enough damage without the mortal wounds. Death Hex would be gold here. That’s why I say this is one time Mort, and Toilet Cannon dude are solid.

The DP is an auto choice too but... I never found I could do enough damage against that particular unit.

Yes, the wraiths are the only thing I'm concerned with. I hate depending on Volw + blight bombardment + putrifier to hopefully kill them with mortal wound spam but I don't see any other option.

I should add that if I need to I can bring Mortarion and a Levi dread plus 3 of PBC, Hauler, Drones, etc. but these are supposed to be more friendly games. The last time we played he brought a list close to what I listed but that was against my Space Wolves. To my surprise my SW actually handled the Necrons well since I could give all my troops 3++ with storm shields. Sadly not an option here.
