Kill Team Tactica: Heretic Astartes

I took 5 plain Zerkers in my last KT game, they all got MVPs; their tonnes of attacks with Chainswords is just thematic and effective.

Okay, so this is what got me interested. As I played Kill Team originally with my Death Guard and....

I felt like "That Guy" because they just would not die. Ever. I didn't use Poxwalkers, I used actual Plague Marines and in a tournament we did (this was before Commander even), I didn't lose a SINGLE MARINE. I stopped playing Kill Team with my Death Guard because I felt like a complete :cuss to do that to everyone because it was "Oh, here's Gederas and the Plague Marines. GG, can't hope to kill them".

Berzerkers being in Elites though? My World Eaters want to have some fun now.

Well firstly, you don't become "That guy" by having a strong list. Especially not in a tournament where it's expected for people to bring strong lists. You become "That Guy" by being a dick. Even someone who keeps losing could be "That Guy".

Secondly, I'd chalk that up to lucky dice. One of my regular opponents plays Death Guard too (also without Poxwalkers because they are pretty useless) and I've won against him a few times with Primaris and with T'au so it's definitely not unbeatable or anything.

Yeah my Death Guard were pretty tanky I lost two models in my game - one was the plasma gunner who nuked himself much to our amusement and the other was my Cleaver guy who charged the lone surviving Deathwatch marine rocking an Infernus Heavy Bolter and died to overwatch.

I am really tempted to build an Iron Warriors killteam next using the Shadowspear chaos marines and a couple of traitor guard from Blackstone Fortress. How would this team look?

Leader

Aspiring Champion with Power Sword

Specialists

Berserker Champion with chainsword and power fist Veteran spec

Chaos Marine Gunner with Heavy Bolter Heavy spec

Chaos Marine Gunner with Plasma Gun Sniper spec

Non-specialists

Cultist gunner with flamer

Chaos Marine with bolter

Chaos Marine with chainsword

The cultist is there just for the flamer and I want more Marines than Cultists as these will be a trench raider killteam :smile.: I'll build a roster aswell but I love the sound of the Berserker Champion being first through the breach!

(edit: I am using Battlescribe so the point might be off but the above team should be 100 points!)

Sometimes it happens, the dice gods being what they are (helped by PM being pretty tough)! I've played a three way game with my CSM and didn't lose a single model or take a flesh wound, I've had a few games with my Rubrics without losing a model too.

KT is great because things can hinge so much on a single dice roll, but sometimes that results in skewed games. For more elite armies like Marines I've found games tend to be sink or swim; either your superior stats push through and break the enemy down, or you take some hits and can't muster the resources to compete and get overwhelmed.

I'm starting a new Kill Team despite none of my others being finished, and thought it would be a good excuse to pick up a Chaos Marine box.  These will be Night Lords, and I'm planning on adding a Sorcerer and a couple of Terminator Gunners to complete the Roster.

The Specialists are in the front row there, and they are:
  • Chaos Marine Combat specialist, modeled as a knife-fighter but counts as a Chainsword
  • Berserker Champion Zealot, with a Power Sword and Chainsword
  • Aspiring Champion Leader, with the standard Plasma Pistol/Power Fist loadout
  • Chaos Gunner Sniper with Autocannon
  • Chaos Gunner Veteran with Flamer

Looking forward to seeing them painted, Mr. Smith! Any meatshie-- err, Cultist volunteers to fill the ranks?

Thanks Prophet!  I think I may experiment with Contrasts for this team, and see how they turn out.

No plans for Cultists for now, because I don't really see Night Lords as being as likely as other Legions to let mortal followers to tag along on their terror raids.  That said, I keep finding myself with points left over when trying different model combinations, so I may throw some in eventually as filler.

I could see even nightlords using a local guide to make their way behind enemy lines... in order to make effective terror strikes they need to hit the right targets, and for that they good intel and there is only so much one can tell from long-distance scans.

If you can get your hands on some of the old necromunda ratskin models, those would it that theme well.  Or anybody who forgoes the "I'm chaos" look and looks like they could pass undetected in civil society... so a civilian looking model or an AM guardsman.

That still sounds more Alpha Legion to me.

I think even Night Lords would rather attack a high value target (say, and eclesiarchical leader) and leave their skin hanging from the basilica rather than just murder off peons.  And hitting high value targets usually requires human generated intelligence.

I have a question here for Heretic players.

Which legion faction is better: word bearers or night lords?

I will be playing mostly against tau, dark eldar, and MEQ.

It really depends on your play-style and how you want to run them.  The Night Lords Trait (-1 to enemy Nerve tests for each model within 3") only really comes into play if you get in close.  So you would probably want to go melee-heavy, which admittedly is not Chaos's strongest area in Kill Team (with the exception of Elite units.)

The Word Bearers Trait (+1 to Nerve tests,) on the other hand, can be a game saver, but is only really going to come into play late in the game after you've taken damage and those Flesh Wounds start stacking up.  Still, your opponent will probably be in the same situation by then, so having an advantage there can come in handy.

@Mr.Smith,

Thanks for the input. I was looking into building a fluffy type of kill team that does not get steam-rolled over by railfinder spam.

I am thinking of having cultist and psyker commander with sprinkle of chaos marines. The cultist don't benefit from the legion trait, but i expect to lose a lot of cultist during the game.

If I choose the word bearers, what chaos marines I should be adding into the kill team?

I was thinking of adding following:

* chaos possessed

* aspiring champion kitted for cc

* plasma gunner

* autocannon gunner

* khorne bezerker?

Any of those options would work in Word Bearers list.  They make extensive use of Possessed, so that's an easy choice.  Even the Berserker fits (he could be a Worldeaters mercenary, or from a sub-cult within the Word Bearers themselves.)  I feels it's best to have a mix of different models on your roster.  A Dark Apostle might be a more 'fluffy' choice as a Commander, as Word Bearers Sorcerers don't seem to show up all that much (though I'm sure they exist.)

If you can find it, Daemon World is an old Black Library novel which featured a small band of Word Bearers, operating in a way you would expect from a Chaos Marine Kill Team.  Maybe it could provide some ideas or inspiration.
