[SWA] [Kill Team] Comparison

Recommended Posts

I am posting this because I want to get some feedback on whether this new Kill Team edition is better than SWA. If you can list the PROs and CONs that would be helpful.

Example.

PRO

* alternating action good for multiplayer games; it it is not a you move, shoot, & charge type

Any thoughts from the community?

Being able to build a roster and then select a kill team from that roster is a huge advantage that Kill Team has over Shadow War: Armageddon. This allows players to tailor lists to missions/opponents, and also means that the death of a member isn't necessarily a huge setback.

The skill progression rules in Kill Team are far better than those in Shadow War: Armageddon, both in terms of variety as well as in the strategy of the branches/choices you have to make.

The common access equipment (e.g., red-dot laser sights, clip harnesses) were an interesting and characterful advantage that Shadow War: Armageddon had over kill team. Also, the noisy rule (for weapons like chainswords) providing an interesting and characterful aspect of the types of missions that the game covered. Kill Team, the core rulebook, is supposed to represent similar types of missions, so the lack of noisy detracts from that atmosphere a bit.

Depending on how you look at the relationship between Kill Team and mainstream Warhammer 40,000, having the rules follow the 8th edition pattern allows the Kill Team game to serve as an easier gateway into the larger Warhammer 40,000. Shadow War: Armageddon performed similarly in that it was a gateway into 7th edition Warhammer 40,000. This gateway aspect is highly subjective, though, with some players not minding more distinct rules sets.

Pros for kill team:

More balanced, probably.

More streamlined/faster play.

More unit options for each faction.

Better supported, probably, time will tell.

Pros for SWA:

Massively more individual model customization.

That may seem like a lot more going for kill team, but the difference in customization is huge. I'm also on the fence about the campaign systems. Kill team is probably more balanced as far as victory conditions go, but it doesn't have as interesting character progression.
